  • Patent number: 5928476
Abstract: A coke oven door for closing the open end of an elongated coking chamber of a nonrecovery coke oven, including process air vents extending through the door at a level above a coal charge to be coked, has a structural frame on its outer surface including an elongated manifold extending across the door adjacent its bottom with a plurality of inlet openings in the manifold, and a tubular duct system connecting the manifold to the process air inlets whereby reduced pressure in the oven will draw air through the process air inlets and the duct system to thereby draw emissions from the area at the base of the door into the oven for incineration.

  • Patent number: 5917115
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for degassing molten metal in a vacuum treatment chamber defined by a open topped ladle containing the molten metal and a generally cylindrical refractory lined cover having a closed top and an open bottom positioned on the ladle, with a temporary joint formed therebetween, and a vacuum seal sealing the vacuum treatment chamber from the atmosphere. A vacuum offtake is connected to the cover chamber to apply vacuum to the vacuum treatment chamber, and the molten metal is stirred to produce sufficient turbulence and splashing to produce an increased surface area of molten metal exposed to vacuum to accelerate the degassing rate. The offtake outlet is located at a height above the cover chamber open bottom to substantially prevent splashed metal and slag from being carried into the offtake while permitting aggressive stirring to increase treatment rate.

  • Patent number: 5600564
Abstract: A coke oven communication and control system uses high frequency spread spectrum transceivers which are land based (connected to a central controller) and machine based (on a charging car, door machine, pusher, or quench car). Each land based transceiver communicates with a single corresponding machine based transceiver, there being different frequencies for each of the machines. Except for the quenching car transceivers, the other land and machine transceivers all are selectively connected to a pair of antennas which are alternately used to overcome interference. An advantageous communication technique is used to send data between a central controller, known as a battery programmable logic controller (PLC), and the machines. Control strategies are used to minimize malfunctioning of the coke oven battery.

  • Patent number: 5588752
Abstract: An improved double row tapered bearing assembly for use on rail cars employs a shortened journal in combination with a seal wear ring having an inner surface in interference fitting relation with the journal and an outer surface having a diameter at least equal to the mean diameter of the inner raceways. The wear ring and backing ring cooperate to provide an increased journal and bearing assembly section modulus and rigidity to thereby reduce flexing and the consequent journal fretting and component end face wear.

  • Patent number: 5571328
Abstract: A hot dip metal strip coating apparatus includes at least one roll submerged in a bath of molten coating metal for guiding the strip through the bath. The submerged rolls are mounted on the ends of support arms by bearings including a pair of substantially flat bearing surfaces disposed in planes parallel to and spaced from the horizontal axis of the roll shaft, with the planes of the flat surfaces intersecting one another at an angle within the range of about 90.degree. to about 150.degree.. The flat bearing surfaces are defined by inserts formed from a carbide material having excellent wear resistance and independently supported to contact the roll shaft tangentially during operation.

  • Patent number: 5544868
Abstract: An improved fuel lance and blow pipe system for injecting supplemental fuel into a blast furnace includes a lance support on the blow pipe housing by use of a quick disconnect coupling for releasably coupling the lance to the blow pipe and accurately fix the lance to discharge supplemental fuel into the hot blast. The coupling can be manually operated to disconnect the lance, without use of tools, to permit the lance to be retracted for inspection or replacement, or to facilitate packing of the tuyeres directing the hot blast into the furnace.
