    Abstract: A center-fed deployable reflectarray antenna system comprised of a stack of flat reflectarray panels, a deployment mast, a waveguide, and an antenna feed. The flat reflector in its deployed configuration is subdivided about its center into n equal panels. The stowed configuration has the n panels arranged in a vertical stack with each separated from the next by a small distance. Panel mounting brackets are attached to each panel at the center area where they would have converged in their deployed configuration. The deployment mast is a hollow cylinder with guide slots cut through its wall. The bottom panel is fixedly attached to the bottom of the deployment mast while the remaining panels are moveable attached to the guide slots. The guide slots are designed so that when going from the stacked to the deployed configuration each panel is moved with respect to the fixed panel along its guide slots a predetermined angle at which point it is dropped to the plane of the fixed panel.

    Abstract: A standard tensile test device is improved to accurately measure the mechanical properties of stranded cables, ropes, and other composite structures wherein a witness is attached to the top and bottom mounting blocks holding the cable under test. The witness is comprised of two parts: a top and a bottom rod of similar diameter with the bottom rod having a smaller diameter stem on its upper end and the top rod having a hollow opening in its lower end into which the stem fits forming a witness joint. A small gap is present between the top rod and the larger diameter portion of the bottom rod. A standard extensometer is attached to the top and bottom rods of the witness spanning this small witness gap. When a force is applied to separate the mounting blocks, the gap in the witness expands the same length that the entire test specimen is stretched.

    Abstract: An optical detector senses the intensity of scattered light reflected by a surface coupled to a vibration source. If the vibration source is operating, the coupled surface vibrates at the same frequency. Incident light reflected by the surface is modulated by the vibration at a hypertemporal frequency. The detector produces a direct electrical current as a temporal function of the detected modulated light intensity. A transimpedance amplifier converts the current into a voltage. A voltage amplifier amplifies the voltage. An analog-to-digital converter converts the amplified voltage into digital signal. A digital signal processor converts the digital signal into a function of power spectral density and frequency using Fourier transform and principle component analyses. The vibration signature of the vibration source, if present, is discerned from a graphical display of the foregoing function.

    Abstract: A method for fabricating a grid-stiffened structure from fiber-reinforced composite materials. A skin is applied to a smooth, hard base tool. Ribs comprised of carbon-fiber tows are formed on the skin, and shallow cavities are formed between the ribs and the skin. An expansion block is placed in each of the cavities, and is held in place by an elastomeric contact adhesive having adhesive properties that are substantially diminished when the adhesive is heated to an elevated curing temperature. The assembly is then autoclave cured. After cooling, the formed structure is separated from the base tool and the expansion blocks are removed from the cavities. A grid-stiffened sandwich structure is formed by applying an outer skin over the ribs and expansion blocks, before curing the assembly. After cooling, the outer skin is removed to allow extraction of the blocks, and subsequently bonded to the ribs.

    Abstract: A high-energy laser weapon system in which the high-energy laser beam itself is used to correct for atmospheric fluctuations thereby replacing a separate beacon illuminator system. The high-energy laser is turned off (negative pulse) periodically for a very short period giving a wavefront sensor an opportunity to measure the return of the high-energy laser beam from the target. A wavefront sensor drives a deformable mirror based on this return signal avoiding wavelength anisoplanatism. In addition, the high-energy laser weapon can be snapped ahead of the path of the target during the negative pulse to avoid tilt anisoplanitism.

    Abstract: A flexible membrane is attached to an internal wall of the fairing of a flight vehicle. The membrane is inflated with gas to achieve a shape that couples with and thereby attenuates the first acoustic resonance occurring within the volume enclosed by the fairing. A sensor senses the varying ambient atmospheric pressure during flight. A pressure regulating system includes an inflation valve and pressure relief valve. Based on the sensed ambient atmospheric pressure, this system adjusts the membrane's gauge pressure throughout the flight trajectory to maintain the desired coupling gauge pressure. Acoustic blankets can also be attached to the internal walls of the fairing to abate resonances having frequencies greater than 500 Hz. Inflating the membrane with helium enhances the attenuation otherwise obtained. Multiple membranes can be individually tuned to respectively attenuate multiple acoustic resonances.

    Abstract: A damper containing magneto-rheological (“MR”) fluid and a plunger lies between and is mechanically coupled both to a fixture and a vibration source. The plunger has a head immersed in the MR fluid. Annular magnets circumscribe the damper and produce a magnetic field surrounding the damper. A tubular shielding sleeve composed of magnetically impermeable material surrounds a portion of the damper. The sleeve is mechanically coupled both to the fixture and the vibration source by springs, and can translate relative to the damper to affect the strength of the magnetic field acting on the MR fluid surrounding the plunger head. The sleeve oscillates responsive to vibration of the vibration source and controls the viscosity of the MR fluid surrounding the plunger head in proportion to the amplitude of the sleeve's oscillation. The resonant frequency of the sleeve is adjusted to approximate the fundamental resonance of the fixture.

The inner member is composed of a carbon composite and the over-wrap is composed of a non-carbon composite. The inner member has a negative coefficient of thermal expansion and the over-wrap has a positive coefficient of thermal expansion that is an order of magnitude greater than that of the inner member. When subjected to cryogenic temperatures, the over-wrap will shrink and apply a compressive force against the inner member, to resist the creation of microcracks in the inner member.

The inner floating liner structure can be formed by two thin interlocking (outer and inner) shell s formed in a cylindrical, end dome geometry. An outer structural overwrap comprised of graphite/epoxy covers the double shell liner. A pair of separately fabricated polar bosses seal against the inner of the two interlocking floating liner shells are then each bonded to the tank, fittings, and piping.

    Abstract: The electron impact surface of an anode/collector is coated with a carbon nanotube coating to reduce the production of secondary electrons and, concomitantly, to suppress the formation of neutral gases and plasma. A carbonizable resin is first applied to the electron impact surface, followed by a coating comprised of carbon nanotubes. The coating is pyro-bonded to the surface by heating the anode/collector to over 700° C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Next, the anode/collector is heated to over 1000° C. while a low-pressure hydrocarbon gas, for example, methane, is flowed over the carbon nanotube coating. The gas decomposes and creates a smooth, non-porous, rigid surface on the carbon nanotube coating. The anode/collector is then heated in a vacuum to evaporate any residual water in the carbon nanotube coating.
