Patent number: 5540530Abstract: A uni-directional slack adjuster is incorporated into a hold-down tension rod or strap, such as a hold-down anchor bolt for bolting a shear wall on one floor to a shear wall or foundation wall below, when a wood floor joist assembly is in between. The slack adjuster eliminates bolt slack so that in the event of an earthquake or hurricane, the sill plate is positively anchored with no vertical bolt play, eliminating much of the cosmetic damage that is often done to the wallboard and other finished surfaces due to distortion of the wallboard framing as the sill rises abruptly until it reaches the end of travel on the hold-down bolts. The slack adjuster comprises a link in the tensioner and non-reversibly either expands or contracts axially depending on the particular embodiment.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1994Date of Patent: July 30, 1996Assignee: Simpson Strong-Tie Company, Inc.Inventor: Scott R. Fazekas

Patent number: 5467570Abstract: A single piece tension tie connection for tyhing a wood, or steel structural frame member to a wood, steel or concrete structural base member. The tension tie consists of an elongated strap member having triangular shaped side members with four seat members integrally connected to the strap and side members so that the four seat members are locked together and act as a unit in withstanding bending forces imposed by large tension forces imposed on the strap. The entire tension tie is a single member requiring no welding or separate washers.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1994Date of Patent: November 21, 1995Assignee: Simpson Strong-Tie Co., Inc.Inventor: William F. Patent number: 5419649Abstract: An intermediate rail to post connection including a sheet metal connector for attaching a wood intermediate rail to a wood post is disclosed. The sheet metal connector is preferably formed with a base member, an integral seat member and a post engaging flange. Preferably four fasteners which may be either screws or nails are inserted through suitable openings in the sheet metal connector. Two of the fasteners pierce the sheet metal connector, the intermediate rail and the post in such a way as to be in double shear. The other two fasteners are inserted through the sheet metal connector directly into the wood post. The sheet metal connector is placed on the underside of the intermediate rail and all fasteners are therefor inserted from the underside of the intermediate rail.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1994Date of Patent: May 30, 1995Assignee: Simpson Strong-Tie Co., Inc.Inventor: Tyrell T. Patent number: 5380116Abstract: A hip ridge connection in a building structure in which two hip rafters are connected to a ridge member by a sheet metal hip ridge connector having a base which is in registration with the end face of the ridge member and has flanges fastened to the side faces of the ridge member, and two seat members holding the two hip members in selectable sloping relation to the ridge member. The same sheet metal hip ridge connector may also be used to connect two hip rafters to a wall or the face of two common rafters. Modified forms of the sheet metal hip ridge connector may be used to connect 2x or 4x dimensional lumber hip rafters to 2x or 4x dimensional ridge members. Patent number: 5378499Abstract: A method for lapping of gun barrels on fully assembied firearms is provided using cartridges fitted with lapping bullets impregnated with abrasive. The present invention provides a process for simultaneously impregnating a quantity of lapping bullets with an abrasive, in which a quantity of unlubricated bullets are placed in a tumbler with steel balls and quantity of the desired abrasive. The speed of rotation of the tumbler, and the shape of the tumbler are selected so that the bullet/abrasive/tumbling media mix folds on itself, thus providing an even impregnation of abrasive on the bullets and minimizing any deformation of the bullets. The mixture is allowed to tumble for a period of time, typically about an hour, after which a sufficient quantity of the abrasive is firmly embedded on the surface of each bullet. The abrasive impregnated bullets can then be coated with a protective and lubricating finish, such as carnauba wax, if desired.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1992Date of Patent: January 3, 1995Assignee: Neco/Nostalgia Enterprises Co.Inventors: Merrill D. Patent number: PP9499Abstract: This invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) named `Frau Katsuko` which originated as a seedling from the inventor's controlled hybridization of the Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars `Madam Blumkock` and `Silver-Edge` and is distinguished from its parents by the combination of its pigmentation pattern in its sepals which is predominently colored with deep, irregular, white edges; its deeply serrated, ruffled edges; and its dense inflorescence that does not require staking for support. Pigmentation is darkest at base of sepal, fading slightly as it progresses along the length and width of the sepal, and then turns white as far as 5 mm from edge. The sepals of `Madam Blumkock` are uniformy pigmented one color, while the sepals of `Silver-Edge` are also uniformly pigmented except the sepal edges are white.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1995Date of Patent: April 9, 1996Assignee: Miyoshi & Co. Patent number: PP9500Abstract: This invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea macrophylla subsp. macrophylla var. normalis (Thunb.) named `Frau Reiko` which originated as a seedling from the inventor's controlled hybridization of the cultivars Hydrangea macrophylla and Hydrangea macrophylla DC var. hortensia `Silver-Edge`. `Frau Reiko` is a lace cap Hydrangea characterized by an inflorescence consisting predominently of non-sepalous florets in the center with some open florets on the perimeter. The non-sepalous buds open to provide a pink or violet background to the exposed white pollen. The color of the sepalous buds, is predominately blue or pink with narrow delineated, finely serrated white edges. The pigmentation begins at the apex and fades slightly as it progresses across the length and width of the sepals, and then turns white 5 mm or less from edge. Dark pigmentation ocassionally reaches the edge of the sepal the apex. The sepals are also characterized by their finely serrate edges.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 1995Date of Patent: April 9, 1996Assignee: Miyoshi & Co. Ltd.Inventor: Hiroshi Ebihara

Patent number: PP9510Abstract: This invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea macrophlla (Thunb.) named `Frau Machiko` which originated as a seedling from the inventor's controlled hybridization of the Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars `Madam Blumkock` and `Silver-Edge` and is distinguished from its parents by the unique pigmentation pattern which gives a cruciform appearance to its florets. Sepal color of `Frau Machiko` is predominately white with blue or pink pigmentation beginning at the base of the flower and fading to white as it progresses across the length and width of the sepals. Color is deepest in the 5-7 middle veins of the sepals. The sepals of `Madam Blumkock` are uniformly pigmented one color, while the sepals of `Silver-Edge` are also uniformly pigmented except the sepal edges are white. The new variety `Frau Machiko` further possesses the favorable characteristics of a compact growth habit, long lasting large flowers and ability to be easily forced in a greenhouse for flowering in the spring.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 1995Date of Patent: April 16, 1996Assignee: Miyoshi & Co, Ltd.Inventor: Hiroshi Ebihara
