Patent number: 4228513Abstract: The invention relates to a monitor system and method for monitoring the occurrence of events in a cyclical process. Whether the successive events occur at their proper positions within the process, position meaning, for example, a physical location and/or a position in time, is accurately monitored, and the process is stopped and a warning issued when an event is missed. Monitoring can be restarted at a point of interruption with resumption of correct checking for successive events. Moreover, if an event is missed, the process and monitoring may be restarted and the missed event selectively automatically deleted from the list of sequential events for which the monitor system looks. The invention is employed, for example, in connection with a conveyor belt system to detect rips in the belt.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 1978Date of Patent: October 14, 1980Assignee: The B. F. Patent number: 4217292Abstract: Amine molybdates are formed by reacting molybdenum trioxide (MoO.sub.3) with an amine in an aqueous medium essentially free of acid and in which is dissolved a water-soluble ammonium or monovalent metal or divalent metal or trivalent rare earth metal salt of an acid, or a combination thereof. Although the reaction may be carried out at room temperature, the reaction mixture desirably is heated to between about 75.degree. C. to 110.degree. C. and preferably is refluxed to reduce the time required for completion of the reaction. The reaction slurry is stirred while the reaction is occurring. Upon completion of the reaction, the amine molybdate is separated from the liquid phase, and is washed and dried. After removal of the solid amine molybdate from the slurry the liquid component can be reused avoiding possible environmental difficulties.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1979Date of Patent: August 12, 1980Assignee: The B. Patent number: 4181644Abstract: Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride resin (CPVC) is blended with a block copolymer of styrene and a diene (SD) or of styrene-diene-styrene (SDS), which block copolymer is referred to as a "pro-modifier" because, by itself, it performs a dual function of processing aid and impact modifier in CPVC. For tailoring specific desirable impact properties and physical characteristics into a CPVC resin composition, it may be desirable to use a conventional impact modifier in combination with the block copolymer. When the block copolymer is so used, such use being referred to as that of a "co-modifier", the block copolymer and conventional impact modifier provide a CPVC composition with unexpectedly enhanced impact strength. The block copolymer consists essentially of a vinyl aromatic compound and a conjugated idene, such as styrene-diene (SD) diblock copolymer, or a styrene-diene-styrene (SDS) polyblock copolymer having a linear or radial block structure, or mixtures of linear and radial block copolymers.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1978Date of Patent: January 1, 1980Assignee: The B. Patent number: 4168717Abstract: A siphon system in which an enclosed container has a chamber for heating a gaseous fluid as by solar radiation. The chamber is in continuous open communication with a siphon having an inlet at an upper level and an outlet at a lower level. A pressure responsive valve is located at the outlet for permitting the release of gaseous fluid at pressures over atmosphere and closing the outlet to communicate pressures below atmosphere to the inlet to start the siphon. When the siphon is filled, the pressure responsive valve opens to release the liquid from the outlet. A float valve may be used at the inlet to retain a below atmospheric pressure in the system for immediate operation when the liquid accumulates at the inlet.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1978Date of Patent: September 25, 1979Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventor: William R. Rinker

Patent number: 4161472Abstract: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin is compounded with a conventional impact modifier referred to herein as a "co-modifier", and a block copolymer "ultra-modifier" which together provide a composition of unexpectedly enhanced impact strength. Irrespective of the characteristic particle size distribution of the co-modifier, which may be normal, bimodal or neither, the combination of ultra-modifier and co-modifier produces a broad distribution of small and large modifier particles. Better impact strength than with either small particles alone, or large particles alone is thus obtained.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1978Date of Patent: July 17, 1979Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventor: Marvin H. Lehr

Patent number: 4161464Abstract: A devulcanized rubber composition is disclosed which is obtained by low temperature phase transfer catalyzed devulcanization of commercial scrap rubber, such as a vulcanized polyisoprene rubber, butadiene-styrene rubber, cis-polybutadiene rubber used for vehicle tires. The devulcanized rubber of this invention is distinguishable from conventional reclaim rubber in that devulcanized rubber is substantially free of polysulfide crosslinks which are selectively broken during the process of this invention with negligible main chain scission.A process for devulcanization of scrap rubber is disclosed comprising (a) comminuting the scrap to obtain vulcanizate particles in the size range from about 325 U.S. Standard mesh (44 microns) to about 6 mesh (3.36 mm), (b) swelling the vulcanizate particles with an organic solvent having dissolved therein a predetermined concentration of an onium salt, and (c) contacting the vulcanizate particles, at a temperature below about 150.degree. C.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1978Date of Patent: July 17, 1979Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventor: Paul P. Nicholas

Patent number: 4144740Abstract: A sample of the material to be tested is formed in a disc-shaped specimen and mounted on a spindle inserted in a mounting hole in the specimen. The spindle is rotated about a generally horizontal axis and a single blade cutter is supported above the specimen for dropping on the specimen in cutting engagement therewith. Lifting and dropping is controlled so that there is bouncing of the cutter and repeated engagement of the cutter with the specimen between the lifting and dropping. The diameter of the test specimen is measured before the test and after a predetermined time of the testing. The decrease in diameter is an indication of the cutting and chipping resistance of the material being tested.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1978Date of Patent: March 20, 1979Assignee: The B. F. Patent number: 4103283Abstract: A monitoring system for motor vehicles that produces a warning signal when the pressure within a tire changes to an unacceptable pressure. The system includes a sensor unit attached on the wheel on which the tire to be monitored is mounted and a second component secured to the vehicle body. The unit mounted to the vehicle body contains a coil wound on a core that is positioned at a location so that as the wheel of the vehicle revolves a second coil wound on a core that forms a part of the sensor unit comes into close proximity to the coil secured to the vehicle body during each rotation of the wheel. When the pressure in the tire changes from a "normal" pressure, a harmonious balance between the two components of the system is disturbed resulting in the triggering of a warning mechanism that alerts the operator of the vehicle that the air pressure in the tire has reached an unacceptable level.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1976Date of Patent: July 25, 1978Assignee: The B. Patent number: 4059126Abstract: An enclosed container has a chamber in which a gaseous fluid is heated as by solar radiation and a first valve permits some of the fluid to be ejected as it expands during heating. The remaining fluid is then cooled as by clouds blocking the sun or during the night and a subatmospheric pressure is developed in the chamber. Through a second valve in the container this negative pressure is communicated to a siphon having an inlet immersed in liquid at an upper level and an outlet closed by a third valve at a lower level. The subatmospheric pressure causes the siphon to be filled with liquid and the weight of the liquid opens the third valve at the outlet causing the siphon to operate. The second valve prevents the loss of subatmospheric pressure in the siphon. The siphon may be used to automatically drain water from areas such as flat roofs of buildings.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 1976Date of Patent: November 22, 1977Assignee: The B. F.
