  • Patent number: 6783038
Abstract: A metering gate for liquid metal flow control with reduced clogging with a top plate, having a first flow channel bore with an inlet having an inlet axis and an outlet having an outlet axis. The inlet axis and the outlet axis are offset. A throttle plate slidably mounted on the top plate selectably receives flow from the top plate. The metering gate provides a less tortuous and more symmetrical flow path when the gate is partially open, but provides a relatively straight downward flow channel allowing full flow when the gate is fully open.

  • Patent number: 6667263
Abstract: The present invention provides a composite pressure-sintered material comprising a continuous phase of hexagonal boron nitride and, dispersed therein, a second material comprising (a) at least one metal nitride selected from the group consisting of silicon, aluminium and titanium nitrides and (b) at least one stable metal oxide; wherein the amount of metal oxide is such that the second material does not contain more than 35% by weight of oxygen. This material possesses a low thermal expansion coefficient and therefore reveals good thermal shock resistance. Another characteristic of this material is its low wettability by molten steel which is thus responsible for excellent chemical resistance to liquid metal. Finally, this material is exceptionally mechanical wear resistant.

  • Patent number: 6651899
Abstract: A nozzle for transferring a flow of liquid metal between metallurgical vessels or molds comprising an entry portion for receiving the liquid metal. A flow regulator, such as a stopper rod, is movable from an open position to a closed position with respect to the entry portion for respectively permitting and prohibiting flow through the nozzle. The entry portion and the flow regulator define a control zone therebetween. A pressure modulator, downstream of the control zone, is adapted to minimize a pressure differential across the control zone. The pressure modulator constricts flow downstream of the control zone.

  • Patent number: 6620084
Abstract: The invention includes an end cap that can be securely mounted to the end of a ceramic spool. The end cap comprises a locking plate adapted to fit into a groove in the ceramic spool. A plurality of angularly offset holes in the locking plate align with similar holes in the end cap. Screws or pins are placed in the holes and welded in place to prevent backing out or loosening. In use, the locking plate is secured by the pins, the groove and the inside surface of the end cap, the combination of which inhibits misalignment. Thermal cycling does not loosen the end cap, cause eccentric rotation or crack the ceramic spool.

  • Patent number: 6616782
Abstract: A thermal shock-resistant ceramic article and a method of manufacturing the article include alternating layers of a first material (2) comprising a fusible, particulate ceramic composition and a second material (3), typically comprising a porous, pyrolyzable material. The layered structure increases the article's work of fracture and toughness, and may lead to improved thermal shock-resistance. The method advantageously uses a sheet, film or sleeve to prepare the article for firing. The composition, thickness, and porosity of the second material (3) will affect the desired properties. The method is particularly adapted for manufacturing cylindrical articles, including stopper rods, nozzles, and pouring tubes for the metal casting industry.
