  • Patent number: 8301197
Abstract: A mobile handset includes a processor configured with software to automatically synchronize the phone book records stored on a smart card and internally in memory. The synchronization process determines if duplicate contact records exist in the target phone book, and whether the synchronization copies records from the smart card to internal memory, or vice versa, before copying contact records. If a duplicate contact record exists, then the copying process is cancelled. The synchronization process may be automatically initiated any time the contact records in the internal memory and the smart card differ.

  • Patent number: 8265094
Abstract: Aspects of de-registering a multicast group member from a multicast group within a wireless communications network are disclosed. An access terminal sends a first multicast registration message to an access network, with the first multicast registration message identifying a first set of multicast groups. The access network receives the first multicast registration message and registers the access terminal for each of the first set of multicast groups. The access terminal sends a second multicast registration message, the second multicast registration message omitting at least one multicast group from among the first set of multicast groups, the second multicast registration message being sent to request de-registration, for the access terminal, from at least one multicast group. The access network receives the second multicast registration message and interprets the second multicast registration message as a request to de-register the access terminal from the omitted at least one multicast group.

  • Patent number: 8260261
Abstract: A method, system and devices for enabling secure pairing between two communication devices equipped with a minimal user interface includes determining a verification pattern based upon security information exchanged between the two communication devices and presenting the verification pattern in a manner that can be perceived by a user who can determine whether the verification patterns are the same. The verification patterns may be presented as flashing light displays, such as flashing sequences of a light emitting diode, or as sounds, such as tones or click patterns emitted by a speaker. If a user perceives that the verification patterns emitted by both communication devices are the same, the user may so indicate by pressing a button on each of the devices. Obtaining such user confirmation of the verification patterns enables establishing a secure pairing between the two communication devices that is protected from active and passive eavesdropping.

  • Patent number: 8255004
Abstract: Information can be communicated by a temperature change of a communication device equipped with one or more temperature modifying elements. A processor configured by software determines when a temperature change should be generated and accomplishes such a change by controlling the application of power to the temperature modifying element(s). The temperature modifying elements may be electric resistance heating elements, thermoelectric elements, or other elements. Users perceive the temperature change produced by the temperature modifying element(s) when they touch the device. Depending on user settings, the temperature change may communicate specific information to the user. For example, a temperature change may convey information regarding the importance of an incoming telephone call, e-mail message or SMS message, or the importance of an impending calendar event. Using temperature as a communication medium allows the communication device to convey information to a user being notice by others.

  • Patent number: 8249629
Abstract: Methods and systems for sending, receiving, storing, and reading CDMA type SMS messages on wireless non-CDMA or multimode mobile devices include embedding a CDMA SMS message in a non-CDMA SMS host message. Such a host message may be created, transmitted, received, or otherwise processed by a mobile device, such as one operating in a GSM or UMTS mode. Similarly a CDMA SMS message may be stored in a SIM/USIM module using similar techniques. An embodiment provides a software application programming interface (API) which transparently processes SMS messages regardless of whether they are CDMA or non-CDMA and regardless of the operating mode of the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8237709
Abstract: Methods and computing devices enable optimized triangle strip generation using forward looking game tree evaluation methods with node evaluation of strip options based on desired performance criteria. The evaluation of possible triangle paths is performed using metrics which may be weighted for each desirable criteria at each move depth. A recursive algorithm may be used to recursively descend through alternative triangle paths and accumulates a score for the path. The final score for each evaluated triangle path at a dead end or maximum depth of evaluation provides a basis for selecting the best alternative path from the base or root triangle for graphic processing. This evaluation or alternative triangle paths may be repeated to select each subsequent triangle for processing or may be repeated after a number of triangles within the selected path have been processed.

  • Patent number: 8238911
Abstract: Methods, apparatus, and computer-readable media for management and arbitration of dedicated mobile communication resources for mobile applications are provided. Mobile applications can be given a priority level that establishes an importance with respect to one or more other mobile applications and at least one mobile resource. If competing applications attempt to access the mobile resource concurrently, access can be provided to an application having higher priority level. Furthermore, control of a resource can be taken away from an application having lower priority in order to affect control of such resource for a higher priority application. In one aspect, a privilege code of an application can be verified prior to establishing control of the resource for the application, to mitigate a likelihood of inappropriate transfer of resources.

  • Patent number: 8224304
Abstract: Methods and systems for disambiguating entries within a contacts listing database of a mobile device detect newly created contact records having a same data element (e.g., a telephone number) and alert the user. Other contact records storing the same data element may be identified. Matching contact records may be grouped and provided a group label so that when a call is received from a member of the group, the mobile device can identify the caller using the group label. Call logs can similarly be disambiguated by informing a user when a call has been made to or received from a number that matches values in data fields of more than one contact record and enabling the user to edit or augment information recorded in the call log to properly reflect the identity of the other party to the call.

  • Patent number: 8204475
Abstract: Methods and devices for preventing unauthorized use of mobile devices allow users to create a mobile device identification number (MDIN) which must be entered before mobile devices can access a new removable memory unit. Upon activation a mobile device may check an identifier of an installed removable memory unit to determine if the memory unit has been changed. If the mobile device determines that the memory unit is new, it may prompt the user to enter the MDIN. If the entry made by the user matches the MDIN stored in secure memory, the mobile device will access the new memory unit and function normally. However, if the entry does not match the MDIN stored in memory the mobile device may not access the new memory unit, thereby denying use of the mobile device. Example removable memory units include Subscriber Identity Modules, Universal Integrated Circuit Cards, and Removable User Identity Modules.
