  • Patent number: 5212763
Abstract: A forced gas electric heater has a serpentine heating element disposed within a cylindrical glass tube. Infrared radiation emanating from the heating element enters the glass tube whereby part of the infrared radiation is directed within the wall of the glass tube to the edge of the glass tube. An infrared sensor is in line of sight with the edge of the glass tube. The infrared sensor senses the hot spot temperature of the heating element and, together with a controller, limits the maximum hot spot temperature of the heating element.

  • Patent number: 5196229
Abstract: Phosphor particles are coated with a continuous, non-particulate, conformal coating of a metal oxide by suspending the phosphor particles in a gel solution containing a metal alkoxide. The gel suspension is then gelled after which the gelled suspension is dried, during which process the metal alkoxide is converted to metal oxide which coats the particles. Such coated phosphor particles can improve maintenance of lamps in which they are employed.

  • Patent number: 5191605
Abstract: A telephone protector comprises an encapsulated bidirectional voltage sensitive switch having three terminals protruding therefrom, one of the terminals being a grounding terminal. There is an elongated shorting bar substantially orthogonal to the three terminals and a metal fusible pellet in direct physical contact with both the grounding terminal and the shorting bar. There is a spring which impels the shorting bar into contact with the other two terminals when the fusible pellet melts.

  • Patent number: 5178808
Abstract: An end plug for an arc tube for a high pressure discharge lamp is made by pressing alumina powder in a tapered cylindrical die so that the diameter of the as-pressed plug is greatest at that part of the plug that has the lowest as-pressed density. The variation in diameter of the as-pressed plug compensates for the variation in density so that upon high temperature sintering, the plug shrinks to a substantially uniform diameter.

  • Patent number: 5164171
Abstract: In the manufacture of ammonium paratungstate, sulfide is added to a tungsten-containing solution in order to precipitate molybdenum sulfide. Volatiles, including sulfides, evolved during this process are collected in a caustic scrubbing solution. The sulfide values in the caustic scrubbing solution may be reused to precipitate molybdenum sulfide by first treating the caustic scrubbing solution with alkaline earth chloride or sulfate to precipitate out alkaline earth carbonate.

  • Patent number: 5134684
Abstract: An electric air or gas heater includes a plurality of equal diameter elongated linear serpentine resistive wire heating elements circularly arranged in parallel about a common axis and disposed within a cylindrical chamber having separable air or gas entrance and exit sections at its opposite ends. Each heating element is disposed in a close-fitting ceramic or quartz tube. The tubes are supported by discs at the opposite ends of the chamber which block air or gas flow outside the cross-sectional area of the tubes. Each heating element has a ceramic cylinder extending through the center thereof through which a wire for electrically connecting adjacent pairs of heating elements extends.

  • Patent number: 5126104
Abstract: A method is disclosed for preparing an intimate mixture of powders of nickel-chromium-boron-silicon alloy, molybdenum metal powder, and Cr.sub.3 C.sub.2 /NiCr alloy suitable for thermal spray coatings which comprises milling a starting mixture of the above two alloys with molybdenum powder to produce a milled mixture wherein the average particle size is less than about 10 micrometers in diameter, forming an aqueous slurry of the resulting milled mixture and a binder which can be an ammoniacal molybdate compound or polyvinyl alcohol, and agglomerating the milled mixture and binder. The intimate mixture and binder may be sintered in a reducing atmosphere at a temperature of about 800.degree. C. to 950.degree. C. for a sufficient time to form a sintered partially alloyed mixture wherein the bulk density is greater than about 1.2 g/cc.

  • Patent number: 5124091
Abstract: A process for producing fine powder, which includes entraining a starting powder material in a carrier gas, injecting the starting powder material using the carrier gas into a high temperature jet to form a high velocity stream of molten droplets, fragmenting the resulting high velocity molten droplets by impacting against a substrate wherein the temperature of the substrate is above the melting point of the powder material, to form smaller droplets, and allowing the resulting fragmented smaller droplets to spheroidize and solidify in flight.
