    Abstract: A police baton sidearm having a baton main body and a crosshandle which is ttached in a perpendicular manner to the baton main body at a position longitudinally displaced from the geometric center of the baton main body. The baton main body also houses a recessed trigger ahead of the crosshandle and means for launching a projectile. In order to achieve impact insensitivity a double action only firing mechanism is employed. The baton main body is constructed in two parts to accomodate breech loading and various connection schemes including interrupted and multilead threads on abutting portions of the baton main body. Guide rods or a hinge mechanism may be provided to accomodate one-handed loading. The police baton sidearm may also be equipped with gunsights and a laser pointing device for improving the accuracy of the user's aim.

A timing circuit allows the referee to place the armed device in the playing field without activating the audible signal. Exemplary submunitions include the M118 Rockeye with an integral horn, the blue series of spherical bomblets, and the M42/46 grenade submunition.

    Abstract: A phantom test cell and method for testing the response of a cardiac pacemaker to electromagnetic fields. The phantom comprises a substantially rigid shell which has a torso-like section and two leg-like appendages. The entire shell is filled with a tissue-equivalent material, which in one embodiment represents an upper bound approximation of human whole body averages. The phantom's torso is equipped with a plurality of access ports to which a current probe containment vessel may attach when immersed in the tissue-equivalent material. The containment vessel houses a current probe and flooded tube through which an implanted pacemaker's leads may pass, allowing induced currents to be monitored. In operation, lead current measurements are taken within the phantom and are normalized using measurements taken without the presence of a phantom. A transfer function is computed by taking the ratio of the induced current measured and a reference E-field and/or H-field measurement.

    Abstract: A multi-channel/multi-layer optical gate contained within a fiber-optic housing having any number of optical cells disposed within the housing. The optical cells are made up of non-linear organic polymers surrounded by a piezoelectric crystal, which is in turn connected to a photovoltaic device. When the photovoltaic device is activated, the piezoelectric crystals cause the non-linear organic polymers to change their refractive index, causing an interruption of a reference laser beam. An output detector is disposed within the fiber-optic housing for detecting the reference laser beam.

    Abstract: A propellant charge igniter is provided with a metallic igniter tube which is consumed along with the main propellant charge. The combustible igniter tube is flexibly attached to a conventional primer head. An elastomeric tube, a springreinforced tube, or a tube impregnated with a wire mesh can be used to achieve a flexible connection. These tubular elements may be bonded to the primer head and igniter tube, or mechanically attached by means of threaded couplings which are crimped over the elastomeric tubing.
