  • Patent number: 5659034
Abstract: A number of layered vanadium oxide crystalline compositions are prepared by simple hydrothermal reactions. Generally, the compositions comprise parallel layers of mixed valence vanadium oxides with guest cations intercalated between the layers. The guest cations may comprise metal coordination complexes with bidentate ligands, monomeric ammonium or diammonium cations, or mixtures of alkali metal cations with monomeric ammonium cation or diammonium cations.

  • Patent number: 5646051
Abstract: A magnetic sensor for use in a reading head for a magnetic disk is formed by depositing a plurality of planar superimposed layers of metals and semiconductors and using for the active element a planar structure formed orthogonal to the superimposed layers by their edges. Specifically, the edges of the superimposed layer form on the orthogonal planar surface a Corbino-disk structure in which conductive regions form inner and outer electrodes about an annular semiconductive region with high magnetoresistance, such as is provided by cadmium mercury telluride or indium antimonide.

  • Patent number: 5622874
Abstract: A sensor for use in read/writing the magnetic pattern stored in a magnetic storage disk uses a Corbino structure comprising inner and outer electrodes enclosing a magnetoresistive element. The sensor is formed at the front surface of a stack of superposed layers of which the first and fifth are of a high resistivity semiconductive material, the second and fourth are of a magnetoresistive material and the third of a metal or composite structure. The second and fourth layers form a loop around the third layer, the first and fifth form a loop around the second and fourth layers. A dopant is diffused into the front surface of the stack to convert edge portions of the first and fifth layers to low resistivity to form a conductive loop that serves as the outer electrode of the Corbino disk, the third electrode serving as the inner electrode.

  • Patent number: 5619359
Abstract: A computer system that includes a plurality of processing elements for parallel computation utilizes a free-space optical network for communication between the processing elements. Such a network employs an optoelectronic switch that includes a binary H-type tree for routing signals to selected ones of an array of lasers. Hybrid repeaters are included in the optical paths to generate output optical beams colinear that are with incident input beams.

  • Patent number: 5553000
Abstract: A technique for optimizing the speed of sequential synchronous digital circuits. First, the bottlenecks that prevent retiming for shortening the delay period are identified and then conditions to eliminate the bottlenecks are derived. This involves identifying the subcircuits associated with the bottlenecks, satisfying a set of timing constraints on the subcircuits, and developing a new circuit that meets the timing constraints. The new circuit free of bottlenecks can generally be retimed by relocation of the forward slack latches to reduce the clock period.

  • Patent number: 5515120
Abstract: A continuous slide projector constructed of a box housing having a semi-transparent mirror pivotally attached to an open front frame. A light source is mounted within the housing for illuminating a transparent slide strip positioned between the light source and the semi-transparent mirror. The slide strip is coaxially rolled upon two spools, each having a drive means, so that when the spools are rotated the slide strip moves in unison with the spools. A second light source is mounted on the housing above the semi-transparent mirror such that a person in front of the housing will produce an illuminated image of himself in the mirror upon energizing the second light source.

  • Patent number: 5500757
Abstract: Optical receiving system, incoming unipolar pulses being converted into bipolar pulses having a constant top amplitude (elements 2, 3 and 4) which, on the one hand, are used for generating replicas of the original pulses, but having a constant top amplitude (element 5) and, on the other hand, for eliminating mutual phase differences by means of phase comparison with local clock pulses (elements 7..14). The latter is preferably effected by the bipolar pulses being multiplied (element 7) by the clock pulses, and by using the resulting DC signal to control a controllable delay element (8).

  • Patent number: 5483909
Abstract: A method and apparatus for sewing the perimeter seam of an upholstered or trimmed article whereby the article is positioned upon a table having a planar sliding surface and a sewing machine located adjacent one side of the table. The table is variably adjustable at an incline between 0 and 90 degrees relative to horizontal so that when an article is placed on the planar surface, normal gravitational forces acting on the article force that article towards the sewing machine thereby facilitating the handling and introduction of the article to the sewing machine.

  • Patent number: 5471609
Abstract: A method and accompanying apparatus for identifying a system, such as illustratively a central processing unit (CPU), that holds a "reserve" for a shared physical device (480, 482, 484) employed within illustratively a multi-processing environment. Specifically, sense data (500) returned by execution of a Reset Allegiance (R/A) command, by a control unit of a shared device, contains the path group identifier (PGID) (300) for a path group (680) through which a reserve has been extended. Inasmuch as the PGID is created in an identical manner for all operating systems (VM or MVS) that share devices through an MVS operating system (600), the PGID advantageously and uniquely specifies the CPU then holding this reserve. The PGID contained in the returned sense data is then translated, through a table look-up operation, in illustratively a so-called IOS Record (1100) situated in a Coupled Dataset (620) for a sysplex installation (455), to yield a common system name of the particular CPU then holding the reserve.

  • Patent number: 5452460
Abstract: A method and apparatus, operating within a kernel of a UNIX-based host computer, that ensures that no unauthorized users or processes have accessed a pseudo-terminal (pty) slave file within a pty device driver prior to an authorized process accessing the pty slave file. Specifically, upon receiving, from an application program, a request to open a pty master file to form a pty device driver, the request is granted by the kernel only if the pty master file and pty slave file are presently closed. Similarly, a request to open a pty slave file to form a pty device driver is granted by the kernel only if the pty master file is open and a user identification of an application attempting to open the slave file is identical to a user identification of the application program which opened the master file. In this manner, a pseudo-terminal link between the pty master file and the pty slave file is secure from unauthorized processes being surreptitiously connected to the pty slave.

  • Patent number: 5396854
Abstract: A method for handling and sewing the perimeter of upholstered articles, in which the upholstered article is fed through the sewing machine on a table with a sliding surface in one of whose sides the said sewing machine is fixed, which is characterized by having some pusher elements which protrude from the plane of the table through some longitudinal and circumference arch shaped grooves, which are driven from the lower part of said table. The longitudinal pushers assist the linear feed of the upholstered article until its corner reaches the height of the sewing machine, when they withdraw to their initial position, at the same time as the turning pushers start to work. These turning pushers make the upholstered article turn, describing a circumference arch path of ninety degrees, while the head of said sewing machine sews the corner of said upholstered article in a synchronized manner.
