  • Patent number: 6811744
Abstract: A method and apparatus for embedding features and controlling material composition in a three-dimensional structure (130) is disclosed. The invention enables the control of material characteristics, within a structure (130) made from a plurality of materials, directly from computer rendering of solid models of the components. The method uses stereolithography and solid model computer file formats to control a multi-axis head (480) in a directed material deposition process (123). Material feedstock (126, 127) is deposited onto a pre-heated substrate (19). Depositions (15) in a layer-by-layer pattern, defined by solid models (141, 146), create a three-dimensional article having complex geometric details. Thermal management of finished solid articles (250-302), not available through conventional processing techniques, is enabled by embedded voids (152) and/or composite materials (126, 127), which include dissimilar metals (210, 216).

  • Patent number: 6794728
Abstract: Capacitive sensors used to detect force upon a transparency product for detecting and discriminating crash characteristics of a vehicle, as well as capacitive sensors used in conjunction with a conductive panel functioning as an airbag cover and ground plane for the capacitive sensors. The capacitive sensors are made up of electrodes, of which one may be a conductive coating. The capacitive sensors can be arranged upon a substrate and can include a reference sensor. Long term effects of temperature upon sensor output are compensated for with an algorithm comparing constant desired sensor output to low frequency drift due to temperature effects. Moisture upon a transparency product is distinguished from a nearby object due to the capacitance sensed. A sleep detection algorithm detects when a vehicle operator is drowsy. A capacitive sensor array having a nested circle sensor and L-shaped sensors, along with a dummy sensor is used in a sunroof-equipped vehicle for sensing occupant head position.

  • Patent number: 6765057
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of an aqueous dispersion of an anionic polyurethane in which initially a tertiary aminofunctional acrylic monomer is used as neutralizing agent for pendant carboxylic acid groups in dispersions of a polyurethane or a polyurethane/polyacrylate, whereafter the unsaturated monomers undergo in situ an addition polymerisation, optionally together with other unsaturated monomer. In the process the isocyanate terminated prepolymer may be reacted with 0-100% of a stoichiometric amount of a hydroxy functional unsaturated monomer before the dispersion in water. The tertiary amine functional usaturated monomer is preset in a ratio to the anionic residues to be neutralized in the polyurethane prepolymer from 0.3 to 2 and preferably from 0.7 to 1.5. Furthermore the amount of carboxylic acid functions in the isocyanate functional polyurethane prepolymer is from 1 to 15% and preferably from 2 to 10%.

  • Patent number: 6700333
Abstract: A power level controller and method for an AC electrical appliance that can be implemented in the plug of the appliance, controlling power in response to switch closures on the appliance and/or remotely located switches, or alternatively, may be implemented as a module into which an existing appliance is inserted, thereby providing a retrofit solution for appliance control. By using multifunction switches having steering diodes, multiple commands can be transmitted to the controller, all without the need for additional control wires, since all commands are superimposed on the two conductors that deliver power to the appliance. In addition, the independent control of two polarity sensitivity loads may be implemented. With implementations using integrated circuits, the internal electrostatic discharge diodes within the integrated circuit may be used for the power supply to yield a very low parts count system.

  • Patent number: 6688249
Abstract: The invention relates to a fully automated, or a semi-automated, method for mounting or dismounting a semi-automatic twistlock at a corner of a deck container, wherein the twistlock is mounted or dismounted on a quayside where a ship may be docked for loading or unloading, in a loading or unloading terminal installed on the quayside, the deck container being placed by means of the quay crane on a trolley bearing the deck container. The trolley carrying the deck container is brought into the loading or unloading terminal, which loading or unloading terminal is installed outside the operating area of the quay crane. The deck container is lifted off the trolley, after which an implementation apparatus is activated for mounting or dismounting the twistlock. Subsequent to this operation having been carried out, the deck container is replaced on the trolley and the trolley leaves the loading or unloading terminal.

  • Patent number: 6678434
Abstract: An apparatus and method of optical switching wherein the output ends of input optical channels 142 are held by and movable by actuator arm 108 of a conventional computer disk drive assembly and the input ends of output optical channels 144 are held by and movable by the disk 102 of the assembly. Fixed supports 120 and 136 stabilize the input and output optical channels prior to entry into the optical switch 100. A high resolution voice coil motor receives the switching signal and moves the actuator arm which in turn moves the input optical channels to align them with the selected output channels. Disk 102 is preferably partially rotatable by a disk motor so that the output optical channels are movable and switching speed can be increased. A linear embodiment operates in an equivalent manner with a linearly movable disk and linear actuator arm. An alternative embodiment operates with two or more voice coil motor driven actuator arms, without the use of a disk.
