  • Patent number: 7921206
Abstract: A computer implemented technique framework, prototype tool and associated methods that provide a high degree of visibility and control over the in-field execution of software in a minimally intrusive manner wherein developer-defined correctness tests and validation logic are embedded into the sensor node itself, making in-field software testing autonomous without necessitating continuous developer participation.

  • Patent number: 7653670
Abstract: An architecture and method for data storage and retrieval which also addresses a number of key problems associated with systems employing hash-based techniques. The architecture and method employs a collision-free hashing scheme called Bloomier filter while eliminates its false positives in a storage efficient way. Wildcard support is added through the use of a scheme called prefix collapsing, while introducing only a small additional storage requirement and reduced hardware complexity. Real update traces indicate that both fast and incremental updates are provided—features generally not available in prior-art collision-free hashing schemes.

  • Patent number: 6104371
Abstract: A modular, high-intensity fiber optic color backlight for color displays wherein light is distributed to the display through side-emitting optical fibers. The optical fibers are ordered into an array of channels, wherein each channel contains a number of optical fibers. Each of the individual channels are separated by reflective channel isolators and each channel preferably carries light of a single color. Light detecting fibers are optionally installed in the module so that intensity data may be collected. Each module includes a mechanical and electrical interconnect so that individual modules may be combined, thereby producing displays of arbitrary size.

  • Patent number: 6048632
Abstract: A self-biasing, non-magnetic giant magnetoresistive sensor having a Corbino-disk geometry constructed from a thin film of e.g., doped, Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT) Hg.sub.1-x Cd.sub.x Te exhibiting anomalously large Giant Magnetresistance (GMR) and zero field offset. In one embodiment, the sensor has a silicon substrate, a layer of doped, inhomogeneous MCT, and electrodes attached to the inhomogeneous layer. Alternatively, a buffer layer of, e.g., CdTe may overlay the substrate. In another embodiment, the sensor has a silicon substrate, a layer of doped, homogeneous MCT, and electrodes attached to the doped homogeneous MCT. Alternatively, a buffer layer of, e.g., CdTe may overlay the substrate as well. With constructed in as either of these embodiments, highly doped Corbino devices may show a significant zero-field offset in the GMR which results in a built-in bias field as high as 1500 G at T=300 K.

  • Patent number: 6038337
Abstract: A hybrid neural network system for object recognition exhibiting local image sampling, a self-organizing map neural network, and a hybrid convolutional neural network. The self-organizing map provides a quantization of the image samples into a topological space where inputs that are nearby in the original space are also nearby in the output space, thereby providing dimensionality reduction and invariance to minor changes in the image sample, and the hybrid convolutional neural network provides for partial invariance to translation, rotation, scale, and deformation. The hybrid convolutional network extracts successively larger features in a hierarchical set of layers. Alternative embodiments using the Karhunen-Loeve transform in place of the self-organizing map, and a multi-layer perceptron in place of the convolutional network are described.

  • Patent number: 6028685
Abstract: Providing a common broadcast channel in a WDM (wavelength division multiplexed) system is accomplished by applying a pulsed light source to a dispersive delay line, and also applying the light source to each of M delay lines, such that the Mth delay line has a delay of (M-1) time slots, where M is a nonnegative integer representing the number of time slots to be provided for the broadcast channel. The dispersive delay line spreads the spectrum of the pulsed light source across the desired bandwidth of the WDM system to provide a wide-spectrum signal, and this wide-spectrum signal may then be modulated to provide a plurality of WDM channels. The M delay lines provide delayed pulses that may be modulated to provide a common broadcast channel for reception on a plurality of WDM receivers.

  • Patent number: 5963571
Abstract: A quantum-dot cascade laser which eliminates undesirable single phonon decays associated with quantum-well devices. The elimination of single phonon decays is realized by a three-dimensional confinement resulting in a several-order-of-magnitude reduction in the threshold current. Vertical radiative transitions are employed within single quantum dots contained by Bragg reflectors. Dot size, dot density and dot uniformity requirements are presented along with several embodiments.

  • Patent number: 5933546
Abstract: A multiresolution method and apparatus for searching of a database of images where the search is performed on compressed images, without first decompressing them. The method searches the database of compressed images first at a low resolution to obtain the relative quality of a match between a search template and a candidate image. If the match is below a particular threshold, the search is terminated without committing any further computational resources to the search. Conversely, if the match is above a particular threshold, the method enhances the resolution of the candidate image and then performs another match. As long as the relative quality of the match is above the particular threshold, the resolution of the candidate image is successively enhanced, until a match determination is made at a full resolution of the candidate image.

  • Patent number: 5933774
Abstract: A location registering apparatus provides for redirecting of telephone calls intended for a mobile station to, for example, a land-line subscriber telephone number through the use of a station registering device and a suitably configured cellular recharger for charging a battery located in the mobile station. In operation, when a user places the mobile station in the cellular recharger, a signal from the cellular recharger and reflective of this action is provided to the station registering device. Upon receiving this signal, the station registering device initiates a call to a location register in the telephone network and reconfigures information for the mobile station in this network so that all calls intended for this mobile station are rerouted to the previously provided subscriber telephone number, for example, the station user's home or office number.

  • Patent number: 5367968
Abstract: Apparatus and a concomitant method for sewing seams in upholstered furniture such as mattresses. The apparatus contains a sewing machine located adjacent a conveyor belt which moves the mattress in a linear direction beneath the sewing machine, a presser arm for turning the mattress, and a fastening cylinder for temporarily attaching the mattress to the presser arm during the turning process. A single motor drives the sewing machine, the conveyor belt and the presser arm. As the mattress is moved by the conveyor belt at a first speed, the sewing machine sews a linear portion of a seam in the mattress. A sensor indicates when a corner of the mattress approaches the sewing machine. When the sensor indicates the approach of the corner, the conveyor belt is halted and the motor changes to a slower speed such that the sewing speed is slowed. Simultaneously, the fastening cylinder temporarily attaches a presser arm to the mattress.
