  • Patent number: 5891407
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the production of pure ammonium metallates of the metals W, Mo, V, Cr and Re, wherein alkaline metal salt solutions are adjusted to a pH value in the range from 5 to 9 by reaction with CO.sub.2, these metal salt solutions are passed through an anion exchanger in carbonate form, wherein, in addition to the alkali metal carbonate solution, the metallate form of the ion exchanger is formed, the ion exchanger is then washed until free of alkali and is then eluted by means of aqueous ammonia to form ammonium metallate solutions and the anion exchanger in the OH form, wherein the anion exchanger is converted into the carbonate form by means of CO.sub.2 treatment and is recycled.

  • Patent number: 5883939
Abstract: Group communication technology, such as the Horus process, is used to implement a fault-tolerant high performance, reactive, real-time distributed IN coprocessor. The architecture of the distributed IN coprocessor comprises workstation clusters, external adaptors and an update interface interconnected by high speed communication links. Each workstation of the IN architecture represents a query element, so all the databases used by the IN coprocessor in the course of servicing incoming requests are split between query elements, provided that each of the workstations has access to the information stored in a certain database or databases.

  • Patent number: 5868717
Abstract: A dual-lumen catheter is disclosed that allows access to the vascular system of humans or animals for the high volume fluid flow related to hemodialysis or therapeutic apheresis. One lumen is circular with a wall thickness and material such that the lumen remains open during the fluid exchange. The second lumen is relatively thin walled designed to collapse against the first lumen under the pressure associated with the vascular system. This collapsing provide a minimum cross section of the catheter as it enters the body and the vascular system. However, the second lumen opens under pressure as a high volume fluid flow is introduced into the vascular system through the second lumen. This high volume fluid flow into the body is most often a return of fluid removed from the body via the thicker walled lumen.

  • Patent number: 5861644
Abstract: A method of improving the performance of a traveling wave field-effect transistor operated at frequencies in the microwave range or above the microwave range comprising the steps of forming a depletion region beneath a gate electrode wherein, in a plane transverse to the direction of signal propagation, a depletion region edge has a first end portion located between the gate electrode and a drain electrode and a second end portion located between the gate electrode and a source electrode; and separating the depletion region edge from the drain electrode. Further improvements in the operation of the TWFET include adjusting the first end portion of the depletion region edge to be closer to the gate electrode relative to the distance between the second end portion of the depletion region edge and the gate electrode, controlling an effective conductivity of a semiconductor of the traveling-wave field effect transistor, and setting the length of the gate electode at about one micron.

  • Patent number: 5834121
Abstract: This invention provides a novel composite magnetic bead and a method for making the composite magnetic bead. The composite magnetic bead is comprised of a matrix formed from vinyl monomers throughout which is distributed primary beads, each primary bead of which is a magnetizable metal oxide encapsulated in a rigid polymeric coating. The matrix structure allows the composite magnetic bead to swell in organic solvents without loss of the intermeshed primary beads. Further, the matrix can be functionalized to allow the covalent bonding of sites useful for organic syntheses. The composite magnetic beads are made utilizing a core-shell polymerization techinque under conditions which preserve the oxidation state of the magnetizable metal oxide in the primary particles. In one embodiment, primary beads, each having a hydrophobic exterior surface, are dispersed in an inert solvent with a vinyl monomer and a crosslinking agent for that monomer to form a dispersed phase.
