  • Patent number: 8087165
Abstract: A lightweight radio/CD player for vehicular application is virtually “fastenerless” and includes a case and frontal interface formed of polymer based material that is molded to provide details to accept audio devices such as playback mechanisms (if desired) and radio receivers, as well as the circuit boards required for electrical control and display. The case and frontal interface are of composite structure, including an insert molded electrically conductive wire mesh screen that has been pre-formed to contour with the molding operation. The wire mesh provides EMC, RFI, BCI and ESD shielding and grounding of the circuit boards via exposed wire mesh pads and adjacent ground clips. The PCB architecture is bifurcated into a first board carrying common circuit components in a surface mount configuration suitable for high volume production, and a second board carrying application specific circuit components in a wave soldered stick mount configuration.

  • Patent number: 8037672
Abstract: A quantity of unburned fuel is provided through a combustion chamber of an engine and an exhaust conduit to a catalytic converter. The catalyst in the converter is determined to be non-operational if a post-catalyst temperature sensor does not indicate a sufficient temperature increase between readings before and after provision of the unburned fuel to the combustion chamber. The unburned fuel may be provided by withholding spark ignition to create a misfire in the combustion chamber or, particularly in a direct injection engine, by injecting the fuel during the exhaust stroke.

  • Patent number: 8022346
Abstract: The laser of a laser-generated windshield display is controlled to initially deflect the laser beam in the direction of a reflective target disposed outside a display region of the windshield, and a sensor disposed in a reflection path of the target is sampled to detect the presence of a feedback signal that occurs when the laser beam impinges on the sensor. If the feedback signal is detected, the laser beam is deflected onto the display region to generate a driver display; but if the feedback signal is not detected, the laser is automatically turned-off. Once the laser is turned off for lack of a feedback signal, the control is repeated following a specified delay interval so that the driver display will automatically resume the when the condition that prevented generation of the feedback signal is cured.

  • Patent number: 8004400
Abstract: A method of locating a parked vehicle that is equipped with a RKE system including a vehicle-installed RF communication module and a driver-borne wireless RF nomadic device such as a key fob involves installing a RFID tag in the nomadic device and a RFID interrogator in the vehicle. The driver depresses a button on the nomadic device to transmit a location request to the vehicle's communication module, and the RFID interrogator in turn emits a RF interrogation signal to identify the RFID tag and determine its location relative to the vehicle. The communication module then transmits a compass bearing to the nomadic device, and an indicator of the nomadic device is activated to provide the driver with a bearing for locating the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 8004212
Abstract: A VFD drive apparatus in which the filament of a VFD is coupled at a first terminal to an input voltage derived from a voltage source, and at a second terminal to a shunt voltage regulator that establishes a regulated filament current and a regulated cutoff voltage with respect to ground potential. Other electrical loads such as drive circuitry for the anodes and grid of the display are coupled between the second terminal of the filament and ground potential so that at least a portion of the filament current is supplied to such other electrical loads. Power dissipated by the shunt voltage regulator is thereby reduced, and the cost associated with providing additional voltage regulators for the other electrical loads is avoided.

  • Patent number: 7983046
Abstract: Power electronic devices of an electronic control module are mounted in a power module disposed between the control module circuit board and an interior face of the control module case, with a prescribed separation distance between the circuit board and a housing of the power module. The power electronic devices are mounted on an inboard face of a power module substrate, and a heatsink thermally coupled to the opposite face of the substrate is fastened to an interior surface of the control module case. The substrate and heatsink are mounted in the power module housing, and the power electronic devices are electrically coupled to the circuit board by a set of compliant terminals that protrude from the inboard face of the power module housing. The terminals extend into plated holes in the circuit board, and have shoulders that limit their depth of insertion to establish the prescribed separation distance between the circuit board and the power module housing.

  • Patent number: 7977887
Abstract: An LED drive apparatus includes a microprocessor having a configurable input/output port, a FET current control transistor, and a diagnostic interface circuit. The diagnostic interface circuit includes a transistor having an input coupled to a junction between the FET and the LED, and an output coupled to an input of the FET. The microprocessor input/output port is coupled to the input of the FET for turning the LED ON and OFF and performing fault protection and diagnostics. At each desired transition of the LED, the microprocessor configures its input/output port as an output and momentarily sets the output state to achieve the desired transition, then re-configures the input/output port to determine the conduction state of the diagnostic interface circuit transistor, and determines an output fault status of the drive apparatus based on the determined conduction state.
