  • Patent number: 4121971
Abstract: A system for producing neutron pulses seriatim in which a smaller, high velocity, sub-critical, downward traveling slug intercepts a larger downward falling sub-critical target-mass, both of which have a portion of higher concentration in fissile materials. The combined masses are more than prompt-critical and the resulting neutron and energy pulse is contained within a large pressure vessel. Spray of mostly sodium slurry protects the walls of the vessel from the effects of the neutron and energy pulse and absorbs the energy and neutron excess of the energy-neutron pulse. Heated slurry is drained from the pressure vessel to provide useful heat energy and neutron irradiated materials. Precipitated materials and sodium are used in the fabrication of both the slug and target-mass.

  • Patent number: 4121969
Abstract: A nuclear reactor system which produces useful thermal power and breeds fissile isotopes wherein large spherical complex slugs containing fissile and fertile isotopes as well as vaporizing and tamping materials are exploded seriatim in a large containing chamber having walls protected from the effects of the explosion by about two thousand tons of slurry of fissile and fertile isotopes in molten alkali metal. The slug which is slightly sub-critical prior to its entry into the centroid portion of the chamber, then becomes slightly more than prompt-critical because of the near proximity of neutron-reflecting atoms and of fissioning atoms within the slurry. The slurry is heated by explosion of the slugs and serves as a working fluid for extraction of heat energy from the reactor. Explosive debris is precipitated from the slurry and used for the fabrication of new slugs.

  • Patent number: 4106089
Abstract: Current transformers are utilized to combine the outputs of two 30.degree. phase shifted inverters to produce a three phase output which is low in fifth and seventh harmonics. The arrangement utilizes transformers having volt-ampere ratings which are very low compared to the power output of the inverters. The circuit may also be used to convert a three phase input to a multi-phase full wave rectified output without reflecting high fifth and seventh harmonics back into the line.

  • Patent number: 4081853
Abstract: A plurality of fuses are connected in a general parallel configuration for protecting a circuit, the fuses being serially connected with inductances of varying magnitude such that steady state current may be divided equally among the fuses permitting the use of fuses of lower rating. During an overcurrent surge, substantially the entire current overload is applied to each fuse in turn so that the total elapsed time for opening the circuit is less than with fuses alone.

  • Patent number: 4064981
Abstract: Limit stop apparatus wherein a driven shaft rotates a predetermined number of revolutions in either direction whereupon a travelling nut assembly contacts a shock absorbing stop to terminate shaft rotation by frictionally jamming screw threads between the nut assembly and the driven shaft. Outer and inner portions of the nut assembly are connected for limited relative rotational motion on non-jamming auxiliary threads, thus permitting the driven shaft to be backed off to release the nut assembly from the shock absorbing stop and thereby release the jammed threads with a minimum of available torque. By this structure, locking of the limit stop at either end is prevented.

  • Patent number: 4059770
Abstract: An electric power supply system for a load wherein two prime movers, a gas turbine and a synchronous electric motor receiving its motive energy from a source of electric power, such as a public utility, are utilized to simultaneously drive an electric generator. A fuel controller, which is responsive to the output of the generator, operates in an isochronous mode and regulates the supply of fuel to the gas turbine from a fuel source to bring the turbine, generator, and motor up to operating speed. A paralleling controller, which is responsive to both the output of the generator and the output of the utility power source connects the motor to the utility when the outputs of the generator and utility are of equal frequency and phase so that the motor shares the load in driving the generator.

  • Patent number: 4036080
Abstract: A plurality of nested rims are mounted on spokes of a flywheel hub member in a manner causing the rim assembly to have a noncircular configuration while the flywheel is at rest. • Patent number: 4018060
Abstract: An open loop air cycle air conditioning system draws ambient air into a turbine for expansion and cooling. The air passes through a heat exchanger where it withdraws heat from recirculated cabin air and is passed to a compressor which is operatively coupled to and driven by the turbine to partially recompress the air. The air is directed from the compressor to the intake manifold of the airplane engine. Valves may be positioned at the ambient air inlet to control the flow of air through the air conditioning system and into the engine. Water can be sprayed into the low pressure air at the heat exchanger to provide substantial additional cooling by evaporation.

  • Patent number: 4015438
Abstract: Air at substantially ambient pressure is cooled in a heat exchanger and introduced into an enclosure for cooling. The air is withdrawn from the enclosure and a portion of the air is expanded through a turbine for additional cooling and passed through the heat exchanger for the removal of heat therefrom. The air is then compressed to substantially ambient pressure and expelled. Additional cooling of the expanded air from the turbine may be obtained by evaporating a fluid therein. The fluid may be water condensed in, and withdrawn from, the heat exchanger.
