  • Patent number: 6492657
Abstract: An electron flux amplifier is provided wherein a microchannel plate (MCP) is monolithically formed with, or bonded to, a semiconductor amplifier. In a preferred embodiment, microchannels are formed to extend into a semiconductor substrate to a predetermined depth from the surface, and a collection diode is formed in the substrate beneath the channels. The collection diode may comprise a single planar diode, or a plurality of electrically isolated diodes to provide for imaging of the electron flux. The electron flux amplifier may be used as a detector in a photomultiplier tube (PMT) having a photoelectronically responsive input surface and one or more accelerating electrodes for directing a photoelectron flux toward the electron flux amplifier.

  • Patent number: 6466605
Abstract: An electrode assembly comprising concentric tubular electrodes is provided for high temperature processing of materials. The electrode assembly is connected with a power supply that includes switching means for alternatively operating the electrode assembly in a transferred mode of operation, in a non-transferred mode of operation, or according to a controlled sequence of non-transferred and transferred modes of operation. The power supply system includes variable inductors, such as leakage-coupled reactors, for controlling the electrical power supplied to the electrodes for producing a DC arc. The electrode assembly can be incorporated into an arc furnace for processing waste material in the furnace. The electrode assembly is also suitable for use in the practice of in-situ vitrification and remediation of contaminated soil.

  • Patent number: 6442272
Abstract: A teleconferencing system having an echo canceller is configured for use at a large near-end conference location having a loudspeaker for acoustic reproduction of a received far-end telecommunication signal, a plurality of microphones and local acoustic amplification of the signals produced by the microphones. At least one first microphone is located relative to the loudspeaker such that the acoustic delay time between the loudspeaker and the first microphone is less than or equal to the tail length of the echo canceller. At least one second microphone is located relative to the loudspeaker such that the acoustic delay time between the loudspeaker and the second microphone is greater than the tail length of the echo canceller. Signals from the first and second microphones are provided to a mixer and are mixed to provide a send-input signal to the echo canceller.

  • Patent number: 6430162
Abstract: An echo canceler is connected to an ISDN Primary Rate Interface. The echo canceler is provided with an activation processor for monitoring call control messages on the D-channel and for selectively enabling or disabling echo cancellation on any of the B-channels in response to information contained within the call control messages. In particular, the activation processor decides whether to enable cancellation depending upon the Information Transfer Capability and Protocol Identification fields of the Bearer Capability portion of a call SETUP message. Additionally, the Channel Identification field of the SETUP message is used to identify the B-channel or channels affected by the SETUP message. When a channel is released, the activation processor maintains enabled echo cancellation as the default condition of the released channel. Other signal processing functions can be controlled by the activation processor in a similar manner.

  • Patent number: 6281606
Abstract: A plural output control station for operating electrical apparatus, such as model electric train engines and accessories. The control station employs a data processor for monitoring and controlling the signals generated at a plurality of transformer-driven power output terminals. An exemplary station includes two variable-voltage alternating current (AC) output channels (TRACK 1 and TRACK 2) and two fixed-voltage AC output channels (AUX 1 & AUX 2). The variable-voltage outputs are controlled by a data processor responsive to respective operator-controlled throttles for varying the AC output voltage and therefore the rate of movement and direction of electric train engines, typically three-rail O-gauge model trains. The variable-voltage outputs can also be offset by the data processor with positive and negative DC voltages for enabling engine functions such as horns, whistles and bells.

  • Patent number: 6275580
Abstract: A teleconferencing terminal for hands-free full duplex audio telecommunication systems is provided which limits the amount of acoustic coupling between the terminal's microphone and loudspeaker. A directional microphone is positioned equidistantly from two loudspeakers such that audio signals emanating from the loudspeakers are acoustically coupled by the microphone at substantially equivalent audio levels. The terminal loudspeakers are impedance matched and connected in phase opposition with respect to each other so that signals emanating from the loudspeakers in the vicinity of the microphone are destructively canceled.
