Abstract: A method for generating a synthetic data signal is described. A synthetic data signal having any desired duration is generated from a data signal and a background signal of shorter duration. The duration of the background signal is extended by sampling the background signal at random times and for random durations. The sampled background signal is used to extend the background signal. Event data is identified from the data signal. The extended background signal is randomly populated with event data randomly sampled from the data signal to generate the synthetic data signal.

Abstract: The Chemical-agent Access and Neutralization System (CANS) of the present invention is a small, portable, single-use, disposable chemical treatment apparatus that is used to access and treat Chemical Agent Identification Set (CAIS) ampoules, bottles and/or containers that contain vesicant agents, or chemical warfare agents such as mustard or Lewisite. The apparatus and method of use of the present invention provides a resultant treatment residue that remains totally contained in the CANS treatment container and is safe for disposal. The CANS treatment container can be over packed into a Department of Transportation (DOT) certified shipping container, and shipped to permitted hazardous waste management facilities for ultimate disposal.

Abstract: A Thermal Luminescent (TL) spectroscopy system and method for remote sensing and detection of surface chemical contamination involves irradiation of a target surface with energy from a near infrared pump beam, and measurement of TL liberated by that surface within a middle infrared (MIR) region. Fundamental molecular vibration modes of target contaminants present are briefly activated after the surface has been driven out of thermal equilibrium. An emissivity contrast between strata and target contaminant develops, peaks, and then subsides during a finite thermal window of detection opportunity in which detection of fingerprint identifiers for target contaminants is most probable. Target contaminant identification employs neural network models trained and tested against known molecular absorption frequencies of target contaminants. The use of a pump beam that radiates energy outside the MIR spectra of received TL reduces possible interference with the very weak MIR signals given off by target contaminants.

Abstract: A system and method for providing hazardous incident decision support and training includes a user interface component that receives situation definition data, a hazard assessment component and a decision aid. Decision support advice and decision prompts are presented by the system in response to the situation definition interface and hazard assessment. The hazard assessment and expert advice of the system are updated with elapsed time. In another embodiment of the present invention, graphical user interfaces are provided to display a set of menu entries wherein individual menu entries represent a hazardous incident characteristic. The user may select one or more of the menu entries to create a situation definition. Such definitions may be used, for example, to identify a hazardous agent based upon user-inputted signs and symptoms data.

Abstract: Methods and systems for processing vesicants as well as other irritants are described. In some methods a vesicant, for example, a Lewisite such as the L1 form, the L2 form, L3 form, or combination thereof, is combined with permanganate, for example, as an aqueous solution of sodium permanganate. The methods can include releasing the vesicants or irritants from a munition, for example, by explosively rupturing the munition.

Abstract: The present invention is a system and method for improving the useful life of sorbent beds, such as activated carbon filter beds. It is known that breakthrough in carbon filter beds first occurs at the low gas velocity regions of the filter bed, i.e., at the filter's edges. A recirculation jacket filter system diverts already filtered air from the downstream side of the filter bed toward the peripheral region of the upstream side of the filter bed so that contaminants near the filter's edges are reduced and filter life is improved.

Abstract: A sample heater assembly which permits the detection of low volatility agents by existing chemical agent detectors is described. Existing chemical agent detectors often lack the capability to accurately detect low volatility agents, such as the chemical warfare agent VX. The sample heater assembly provides this capability by heating low volatility agents to vaporization and interfacing with the existing chemical agent detector. The sample heater assembly comprises a sample containment reservoir for holding the low volatility agent sample, which can be attached to the chemical agent detector, and a heating element which attaches to the sample containment reservoir for heating the sample.
