  • Patent number: 5052594
Abstract: A container filling nozzle of rubber has a wide, substantially square, inlet opening and a cruciform outlet slit which, in the absence of external force, is maintained closed owing to the resilience of the rubber. In the zone of the slit, the internal surface of the nozzle wall is formed with protrusions which extend along both sides of each of the arms of the slit and constitute respective thickenings. The protrusions terminate short of the central ridge of the V-form lips of the nozzle. Thus, the lips have their outlet zones more rigid and yet retain the necessary flexibility, so that sealing of the slit is improved and yet the lips can open wide.

  • Patent number: 5047966
Abstract: A coordinate measuring machine is used to extract data points from an airfoil surface. The machine is controlled to move a probe to desired points by a generic program applicable to any airfoil and a nominal data file specific to the type of airfoil being measured containing coordinates of desired data points, surface normal vectors and optional machine control instructions arranged in the order of usage. The program reads the data file and predicts the location of corresponding data points on the surface from the file data and deviation information available from already-sampled data points on the blade. An analysis program accepts the data points, mathematically reconstructs portions of the airfoil and measures dimensions from those portions. The dimensions are compared to tolerances read from another file specific to the airfoil type.

  • Patent number: 5046758
Abstract: A cover assembly for an air cushion restraint has a smooth cover with a layer of foam connected between the cover and a load bearing insert for covering a housing for an airbag and a gas generator which generates an inflatant for the airbag for deploying the airbag; three cutters are pivotally connected to the insert member to cut an insert cover member from the insert and to pierce the smooth outer cover member during inflation of the airbag so as to form a self-piercing cover assembly which will be cut to form a three sided opening through the cover assembly through which the airbag is deployed; the cutters are actuated by an insert cover member support system which will operate the cutters as the airbag is inflated to cause cutting edges on the cutters to pierce the smooth outer cover member. The cutters are recessed within the cover assembly to avoid incidental contact with the cutting edges prior to deployment.

  • Patent number: 5043110
Abstract: A method for testing foam formulations for the quantitative measure of the effects of formulation and/or process variable changes on some kinds of surface problems of a molded part caused by different degrees of imperfection or voiding underneath the part surface. The molded part can be single component or composite, solid or foamed. One example of the surface problem is the so-called "measles or cellulite" problem observed on the vinyl surface of a vinyl/foam composite due to the voids or rattiness within the foam. To accomplish this result, the mold has various sized, spaced apart, aligned openings formed in each of the front and rear walls of the mold, but with the centers thereof at different elevations in the respective front and rear walls. Removable rods inserted through the aligned mold wall openings produce longitudinal openings through the part which is molded around the rods, permitting the effect thereof on the surface of the molded part to be evaluated.

  • Patent number: 5035088
Abstract: A workpiece W to be machined by a rotating cutting tool 32 is carried by a rotary workhead 22 which is in turn mounted on a rotary table 16 for movement relative thereto both rotationally about a first axis perpendicular to the rotation axis of the table 16 and rectilinearly along second and third mutually perpendicular axes. The plane of interpolation between the second and third axes lies perpendicularly to the first axis, irrespective of the angular setting of the table 16. Using a combination of movements, the machine tool is able to produce on the workpiece W an arcuate surface whose radius of curvature is different from the distance of that surface from the workhead rotation axis.

  • Patent number: 5027585
Abstract: In a packaging system, carton sleeves are sealingly closed at their bottoms while received upon respective mandrels, the open-topped cartons are removed from the mandrels and filled, and the filled cartons are sealingly closed at their tops. Between the bottoms being sealingly closed and the cartons being filled, selected cartons are turned through a right-angle about their own axes to bring their top closure sealing sub-panels into a correct orientation for top-sealing. For enabling such turning the mandrels are turnable about their own axes by a cam displaceable between operative and inoperative positions.

  • Patent number: 5015948
Abstract: A two wire transducer and associated circuit processes an output voltage of the transducer to produce a first signal proportional to the position of a non-contacting movable core and to produce a second signal proportional to the temperature of operation of the transducer. The associated circuit includes an excitation source or current driver which provides a fixed frequency sinusoidal constant current across the transducer coil; and first and second demodulator circuits respectively extract position and temperature signals from the voltage developed across the coil of the transducer device. Thus, both temperature and position information are provided by a single device over a single pair of leads.

  • Patent number: 5009212
Abstract: An air fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine includes a plurality of fuel injectors supplied with fuel from a common fuel supply and supplied with air for producing a fuel spray pattern immediately upstream of an inlet valve to the combustion bowl of one of the engines cylinders and downstream of the induction air passage which supplies combustion air to the combustion bowl. The injection air supply is provided by an integral motor pump assembly having an electric motor driving a balanced lobe vane pump. The pump motor is electrically driven to charge the fuel injectors with high pressure air before the engine is started and independent of engine operation. The balanced lobe vane pump has an inlet connected to the PVC valve of the engine to provide a oil mist lubrication of the operative wear surfaces of the vane pump and the vane pump has an inlet connected to an air manifold for supplying lower noise and pulse air pressure thereto.

Abstract: A bumper fastening system for a composite SRIM (structural reaction injected molded) member made up of a core member covered by a reinforced outer cover has a fastening cup connected to the reinforced outer cover by a layer of adhesive material. The fastening cup is a hollow rectangle with a flat end plate which is covered by a layer of adhesive for connection to the composite SRIM or to a metal bumper by spot welds. The hollow rectangle has a depth which will engage it with crush convolutions on frame rails of a vehicle frame. Mating holes in the hollow rectangle and the side rails receive mechanical fasteners for removably attaching the bumper assembly on the frame rails during installation at the automobile assembly plant and for replacement/repair of a damaged bumper.

  • Patent number: 5003432
Abstract: A down lighting system for elevator cabs and the like includes halogen lights in standard and emergency light fixtures. Both types of fixtures are connected to the ceiling by a clamp arrangement which is universally adaptable to a wide variety of ceiling types without changing the light housing dimensions. The clamp arrangement fastens light housings against rotation with respect to the ceiling and it is adjustable to different height ceiling configurations merely by connection to different vertical positions of the outer surface of the fixture. The standard fixture includes a halogen bulb with its own reflector. The emergency lighting fixture includes a halogen bulb/reflector unit with the emergency self focusing bulbs concentrically spaced around it. Both light sources pass focused light directly into the space below the ceiling for meeting test point candle power requirements.
