  • Patent number: 6484170
Abstract: New techniques for generating entries in a content addressable memory (CAM) capable of comparison operations such as “greater than” and “less than” decisions are described. The techniques can be used with binary or ternary CAMs. The number of CAM entries needed to implement such decisions is drastically reduced for both binary and ternary CAMs. In the case of binary CAMs, one or multiple searches are needed to perform the comparisons, while in the case of ternary CAMs a tradeoff between the number of CAM entries and the number of searches can be found. As an example, a method of classifying data networking packets is implemented using the new techniques. A packet classifier based on subfields of a packet header is also described.

  • Patent number: 6354804
Abstract: A propeller with five blades is supported from a hub. A series of apertures is distributed relatively evenly across faces of the blades, the apertures extending from one face of a blade to an opposite face of the blade. The axial extent of the apertures is substantially aligned with the direction of movement of the blades relative to the axis of the propeller. The apertures are normal both to the radial extent of the propeller and the axial extent of the propeller. Each aperture includes a beveled edge in the form of a countersunk lip extending around the periphery on the face. The flow of fluid through the apertures is believed to interfere with turbulent flow such that propeller efficiency is improved.

  • Patent number: 6332841
Abstract: A cushion sub for absorbing both axial and torsional vibration in a drill string and including an outer casing connectable at one end to a section of a drill string, and an inner piston reciprocally mounted in a cylinder within the casing, the piston having a shaft projecting from the other end of the casing connectable to another section of the drill string. The cylinder includes a first cushion device at opposite ends thereof for engagement by the piston to absorb axial vibrations. A spline type connection prevents relative rotation between the piston and the cylinder. The cylinder is mounted for arcuate turning in a chamber within the casing, but the cylinder has vanes which are interposed between vanes fixed to the casing, and elastomeric material between the vanes of the cylinder and the vanes of the casing absorbs torsional vibrations being transmitted between the cylinder and the casing.

  • Patent number: RE37811
Abstract: A tool at the service of a distributed application running on machines of a distributed data processing system running in a local area network, intended for balancing the load on each of the machines of the system, includes a master daemon and a plurality of agent demons. The master and each of the agents calculate the load of the machine on which they are running. The master collects the load data of each of the agents at a first sampling interval and sends that collected load data to all of the agents. At the request of the distributed application, the local agent closest to the application indicates to the application which machine has the lightest load. The application then makes the decision to request the machine with the lightest load to execute the services the application requires. As necessary, the tool selects a master from the agents, thereby ensuring the existence and uniqueness of a master at all times, regardless of failure affecting one 1010 or more machines in the data processing system.
