    Abstract: A biomedical electrode having an electrically non-conductive backing and at least one, and preferably two, conductive plates contacting the electrically non-conductive backing. A field of lossy dielectric material is used between the electrically conductive plate(s) and the surface of the electrode applied to a patient. A field of conductive adhesive contacts both the conductive plate(s) and the field of lossy dielectric material. The electrode does not operate purely capacitively, nor does it operate purely resistively. Hot spots due to "edge effect" are substantially reduced. At the same time, the biomedical electrode functioning as a electrosurgical dispersive electrode has an impedance within the range expected by the contact monitoring safety circuits provided with many current electrosurgical generators. The biomedical electrode also can function as a cardiac stimulating electrode, such as a defibrillation, cardioversion, or pacing electrode.

When a physician is ready to apply the electrode to a patient, the electrode is readily converted to its second configuration wherein the layer of conductive adhesive is exposed for contacting and adhering the bioelectrode to the body of the patient.

    Abstract: A method of forming a thermoplastic layer on a flexible, two-dimensional substrate is provided. In the steps of the method, a thermoplastic powder is provided having a melt flow index of at least 0.008 grams/10 minutes, the powder is applied to at least one surface of the substrate to form a particle layer, and the coated substrate is subjected to elevated heat and pressure until particle layer is fused into a continuous layer and the continuous layer is bonded to the substrate. The invention also includes a powder for preparing the thermoplastic layer and a method of making the powder.

The preferred matrix forming material is polyisobutylene, and the preferred thermally responsive material is a solid solution of ortho-chloronitrobenzene and ortho-bromonitrobenzene.

    Abstract: Acrylate copolymer pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) which incorporate relatively small amounts of a plasticizer are disclosed. The resulting PSAs exhibit improved low temperature performance and minimal effect on other properties, when used as adhesives for graphic marking films. The adhesive system has been found to allow the graphic marking film to be applied at temperatures as low as 20.degree. F. (-7.degree. C.) and to improve the ability of the film to be applied to a substrate without trapping air between the marking film and the substrate. The adhesive system of the marking film also demonstrates resistance to tenting around the compound curved surfaces of rivet heads and corrugations typical of truck trailer sides.

    Abstract: Articles having a complex geometric configuration have hydrophilicity imparted to at least a portion of surfaces of the articles while substantially retaining the complex geometric configuration. The hydrophilicity is imparted by an extremely thin, self-interlocking shell of tactic, hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) enveloping the surfaces. A tactic poly(vinyl alcohol) precursor applied to surfaces of the supporting structure is reacted in situ on the surfaces with a hydrolysis reagent to prepare the tactic, hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) shell. The article having the hydrophilic shell is highly resistant to solvent washout. Hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity can be reversibly provided on regio-specific surfaces of the article. Hydrophilic porous supporting structures loaded with an enzyme system which catalyzes a reaction of a substrate, oxygen, and if necessary, water or moisture to consume oxygen are also described for oxygen scavenging in packages containing oxygen sensitive products.

The articles solve both the problem of solid waste disposal prevalent with single use garments and the problem of repeated cleansing and recycling of multiple use garments.
