  • Patent number: 4161224
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for controlling sliding movement between two telescoping members of a jar or like apparatus for use in an oil well. The telescopic sliding movement between the two members is controlled by a hydraulic impedance device which is bypassed by a hydraulic fluid dump valve after a predetermined amount of telescopic movement between the two members. A dump valve opening means is releasably attached to the walls of one of the members and, after opening the dump valve mechanism, releases from the member wall to move with the telescoping member holding the dump valve mechanism in the open condition. Means is also disclosed for recocking the apparatus and for returning the opening means to its initial position such that the opening means is reattached to the wall of said one member.

  • Patent number: 4160627
Abstract: A hydraulically powered triplex pump having at least three pumping units, each operable in a cycle including suction, precompression and discharge phases, with the cycles being out of phase with one another, whereby simultaneous performance of these functions results in a substantially constant pressure and flow of both the pumped fluid and the power fluid. Separate power and cycle control circuits, which may employ different fluids, are provided. Control valve assemblies, each including two sleeve valves communicating with a common chamber, are operated by the control circuit fluid to condition power circuit flow for various phases of the pumping cycle. Precompression valves, a fill valve and a dump valve are operated by the control circuit to provide additional conditioning of power circuit flow to provide the precompression phase and to correct for variations in pumping unit stroke length.

  • Patent number: 4144937
Abstract: Disclosed is a tester valve having a ball valve rotatable between the open and closed positions for use with a test string to test an oil well. The apparatus includes a ball closing piston in the valve operating mechanism which assists in rotating the ball to the closed position. One side of the ball closing piston is exposed to a first pressure of formation fluid flowing through the interior of the test string on the upstream side of the ball valve. The other side of the piston is exposed to a second pressure which is lower than the first pressure by a pressure drop caused as the fluid flows through the apparatus past the ball being rotated to the closed position. A bypass mechanism is additionally disclosed which is operable for equalizing the pressure on both sides of the ball closing piston when the ball is being rotated to the open position.

  • Patent number: 4133386
Abstract: A method is disclosed for the cementing of casing in a well. The method involves lowering the casing into the wellbore, installing a device on a conduit and thereafter lowering the installed device and conduit to a predetermined position within the casing. The device is then actuated and fluid pressure is applied to the device to interlock the device with either the casing or an adapter previously inserted in the casing. Continued fluid pressure distends a seal member to isolate two regions of the casing. A cementing operation is then performed followed by closure of the device. Preferably, the conduit may then be retrieved for reuse.A device is disclosed for cementing a casing within a wellbore. The device includes a body for occupying a substantial portion of the interior of a region of the casing. The body is connectable to a conduit thereabove and has an external hydraulic seal to pack off the casing.

  • Patent number: 4127028
Abstract: A flow meter for measuring mass flow is disclosed having two vibrating U-shaped tubes, a means for vibrating the tubes, and sensors for detecting the coriolis force couple which results from the vibration and the flow of the material to be measured through the meter. The U-shaped tubes include spaced apart inlet and outlet sections connected to a fixed member at one end, and having the sensors at the other end thereof. The fixed ends are more closely spaced together than are the other ends having the sensors for increasing the moment arms acted on by the coriolis force couple for more easily detecting twist of said U-shaped tubes. The U-shaped tubes also are arranged to have the same natural of frequency for longitudinal oscillations and for torsional oscillations.
