    Abstract: This invention describes a method of using controlled fluidic forces to improve the performance of a biochemical binding assay where a target molecule is captured by specific molecular recognition onto a substrate surface with an affinity coating, and then labeled with a detectable micrometer-scale particle using a second specific molecular recognition reaction with the target. By using specific ranges of label sizes and laminar flow conditions, controlled fluidic forces can be applied to the label particles in order to selectively remove molecules bound to a surface according to their binding strength, and thereby increase the ratio of specifically bound labels to more weakly attached non-specifically bound labels. This method can be used with a wide variety of label types and associated detection methods, improving the sensitivity and selectivity of a broad range of binding assays.

    Abstract: A method is provided for constructing a histogram to represent the root-mean-squared phase differences for a signal received at pairs of elements in an array. A pair-wise element phase difference (“PEP”) between a signal received at an angle of arrival ?1 and a signal received at an angle of arrival ?2 are determined. The difference ?? between the differential phase measurements at ?1 and ?2 is computed. The process is repeated for all unique pairs of angles (?1, ?2) from 0 to 359 degrees and the results are summed over all PEPs to calculate the root mean squared phase difference ?{square root over (??2(?1,?2))} between two different angles of arrival ?1 and ?2. A two-dimensional histogram is created by pairing the measurements ?{square root over (??2)} and ??, where ??=?2??1.

    Abstract: A thermally stable chalcogenide glass, a process for making the same, and an optical fiber drawn therefrom are provided. A chalcogenide glass having the composition Ge(5?y)As(32?x)Se(59+x)Te(4+y) (0?y?1 and 0?x?2) is substantially free from crystallization when it is heated past the glass transition temperature Tg or drawn into optical fibers. A process for making the thermally stable chalcogenide glass includes purifying the components to remove oxides and scattering centers, batching the components in a preprocessed distillation ampoule, gettering oxygen impurities from the mixture, and heating the components to form a glass melt. An optical fiber formed from the chalcogenide glass is substantially free from crystallization and exhibits low signal loss in the near-infrared region, particularly at wavelengths of about 1.55 ?m.

Mass of the microbeam changes when a chemoselective material on the microbeam sorbs a target chemical.
