  • Patent number: 8254985
Abstract: A While a mobile device operates for communications in a WWAN, its WLAN transceiver portion may be maintained in a low power state. During the WWAN operation, the mobile device performs one or more scanning operations with use of a WWAN transceiver portion for identifying a current set of cell site identifications corresponding to a currently-serving base station of the WWAN and one or more neighboring base stations. The mobile device compares cell site identifications of the current set with those in a stored set, and identifies if the, number or percentage of matching cell site identifications of the current and stored sets meets or exceeds a predetermined threshold. If the predetermined threshold is met or exceeded, the mobile device exits the WLAN transceiver portion from the low power state and enables its operation for communications.

  • Patent number: 8248967
Abstract: Techniques for registering for communications for a communications application stored in a mobile device are described. The mobile device communicates, via a communication network, a request for a connection with a private network. If the connection is established within a predetermined period of time, then the mobile device receives from the private network a first IP address for assignment to the mobile device, and communicates to a server a request for registering for the communications using the first IP address assigned to the mobile device. If the connection is not established within the predetermined period of time, then the mobile device communicates to a server a request for registering for the communications using a second IP address assigned to the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8244217
Abstract: A technique in a wireless mobile device for use in enabling service sessions with a host service via a wireless network is described. The device receives a host login credential from the host service, and saves it in memory. The device detects a logoff trigger for logging off from an enabled service session with the host service. In response to detecting the logoff trigger, the device performing the following actions. The device prompts with, in a display, an entry screen having a field for entry of a device login credential for use in logging on to a subsequent service session with the host service. The device receives, via a user I/O subsystem, the device login credential in response to the prompting, and saves it in memory. After receiving and saving the device login credential, the device logs off from the enabled service session with the host service.

  • Patent number: 8238871
Abstract: Techniques for use in a mobile device involve detecting a temperature condition at said device and, in response, operating in a limited communication state for which only emergency communication is permitted. When the mobile device receives a user-initiated communication request, the mobile device inhibits non-emergency communication but permits emergency communication despite the existence of said temperature condition.

  • Patent number: 8230582
Abstract: One preferred method for use in making a device structure with use of the resist channel shrinking solution includes the steps of forming a first pedestal portion within a channel of a patterned resist; applying a resist channel shrinking solution comprising a resist channel shrinking film and corrosion inhibitors within the channel of the patterned resist; baking the resist channel shrinking solution over the patterned resist to thereby reduce a width of the channel of the patterned resist; removing the resist channel shrinking solution; and forming a second pedestal portion within the reduced-width channel of the patterned resist. Advantageously, the oxide layer and the corrosion inhibitors of the resist channel shrinking solution reduce corrosion in the pedestal during the act of baking the resist channel shrinking solution.

  • Patent number: 8233895
Abstract: A source device is initially enabled to maintain data synchronization with a host server over a wireless communication network via a first wireless transceiver for user data of an application program associated with a user account. To enable a target device, the source device is operative to establish a programming session with the target device via a second wireless transceiver. During the programming session, the source device causes user account data (e.g. an encryption/decryption key for the data-synchronized communications) for the user account to be transmitted to the target device via the second wireless transceiver. The user data associated with the application program may be transferred from the source device to the target device via a removable memory card such as a secure digital (SD) card.

  • Patent number: 8233438
Abstract: A router is operative to perform the following actions for each one of a plurality of wireless devices operating in a wireless network. The router initially transmits a number of data packets matched for a window size which corresponds to a default window size. The router then measures a round trip time (RTT) associated with communication of each of the transmitted packets. The router increases the window size if the RTT associated with the communication of each of the transmitted packets is within a first threshold. On the other hand, the router decreases the window size if the RTT associated with the communication of any of the transmitted packets is more than the first threshold but less than a second threshold. The router sets or updates at least one of the first or the second thresholds based on traffic communicated to the plurality of wireless devices via the router.

  • Patent number: 8228876
Abstract: A mobile terminal performs communication operations for maintaining a voice or data call via a wireless AP of a WLAN. During this time, the mobile terminal identifies a RSSI value and a SNR value of an RF signal of the wireless AP. When the RSSI value is less than a predetermined RSSI value, and the SNR value is less than a predetermined SNR value, the mobile terminal provides an indication to switch the communication operations from the WLAN to a WWAN. However, when the RSSI value is less than the predetermined RSSI value, but the SNR value is greater than the predetermined SNR value, the mobile terminal provides an indication to maintain the communication operations in the WLAN. In a concurrent process, the mobile terminal determines a transmission error value for data packet transmissions based on a count of data packet errors.

  • Patent number: 8194576
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for controlling a wireless access point (AP) (e.g. a battery-powered wireless AP) for reduced power consumption are provided. In one illustrative example, the AP is adapted to provide communication access for end stations in one or more activated service intervals of each superframe. During operation, the AP changes the number of activated service intervals that are available to end stations for the communication access, as well as the durations of their active subinterval durations, in accordance with a change in traffic requirements. The AP regularly broadcasts data which indicates the activated service intervals that are made available to the mobile devices. A wireless transceiver of the AP is enabled during each activated service interval made available to the mobile devices, but the AP is placed in a power conservation mode during each deactivated service interval provided in between the activated service intervals.

  • Patent number: 8194605
Abstract: A first wireless AP of a WLAN in a first subnet segment of a network has both a local ESSID and a global ESSID for mobile devices to associate with it. Similarly, a second wireless AP of the WLAN in a second subnet segment of the network has both a local ESSID and the global ESSID for mobile devices to associate with it. The global ESSID is used for accessing a global VLAN which spans across the first and the second subnet segments. Initially, a mobile device associates with the first wireless AP using the local ESSID. Just prior to a VoIP session, the mobile device reassociates with the first wireless AP using the global ESSID. If a handoff to the second wireless AP is made during the VoIP session, the mobile device associates with the second wireless AP using the global ESSID.

  • Patent number: 8165611
Abstract: A router system maintains a status of a wireless device of either available or unavailable. The status of available may be indicative of the wireless device being in-coverage with a wireless network, whereas the status of unavailable may be indicative of the wireless device being out-of-coverage with the wireless network. The router system is adapted to receive, from a host service, a user data message that is addressed to an address of the wireless device. The user data message has a user data payload and one or more request parameters, where the one or more request parameters instruct the router system on whether to return at least a portion of the user data message to the host service when the device status is unavailable. In response to the user data message being received at the router system when the device status is available, the router system delivers the user data message to the wireless device via the wireless network.

  • Patent number: 8135406
Abstract: A mobile device maintains a communication link with a radio access network (RAN) which is part of a generic access network (GAN). The mobile device maintains, via the GAN, a serivce connection for a voice and/or data service with a core network of a visited Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN). The mobile device operates to set and run a timer and, in response to an expiration of the timer, the mobile device sends, to a gateway controller via the RAN, a service conneciton request for a service connection with a core network of a home PLMN of the mobile device.
