Abstract: A mechanism for gripping drill rods in a carousel of a drilling rig provides a dual function of extending and gripping in a single movement of a pair of opposed gripper arms pivotally connected to each other about a first, longitudinally movable pivot pin. A pair of opposed link arms is pivotally connected to each other about a second, fixed pivot pin, each link arm being also pivotally connected at an outer end to a gripper arm. A piston moves the pivot pin longitudinally in the housing, the gripper arms first spread apart from each other and then close toward each other, while simultaneously moving along the housing.
Abstract: An on-off valve is provided for a rockdrill which is operable by a hydraulic fluid under pressure and which is controlled by a hydraulically biassed valve. The rockdrill is turned on and off by opening and closing the on-off valve. When the valve is turned off hydraulic pressure from an inlet line and a supply pin line to a valve line of the hydraulically biassed control valve is cut off, thereby eliminating the pressure on the supply pin. This interrupts the operating cycle of the control valve and thereby shuts off the operation of the hydraulic drill. When the on-off valve is opened the hydraulic pressure from the inlet line via the supply pin line is re-established to the valve line and to the supply pin, and the operating cycle of the control valve is re-established.
Abstract: A tool for handling an elongated, tubular drill pipe has an elongated body between a first and second end for engaging and holding a first and second end of the drill pipe. The engagement ends of the tool are spaced apart a distance slightly less than the length of the drill pipe. The engagement ends are capable of being elastically spread apart when the drill pipe is being engaged, and thereafter the elastic spreading is released to cause the tool to remain in engagement with the drill pipe during the handling thereof.
Abstract: A vibration absorbing handle on a percussive-actuated tool, the handle being covered in a monolithic, vibration absorbing material, and including a flexible member in a bore of the handle, the handle being positioned against an angle surface on a tool housing to rock back and forth over the apex of the angled surface in response to pressure from an operator.
Abstract: A drilling apparatus, having a drilling tower, tiltable for angle drilling, on a drilling platform with an aperture for a drill string, includes a dust seal holder that extends into the aperture in the platform, the dust seal holder being connected to the tower, so as to move up and down in the aperture in an arcuate path along with the drilling tower, as the tower is tilted for angle drilling, the dust seal holder being disconnected from the tower, so as to be not movable, as the tower is moved between a horizontal and vertical position.

Abstract: A deformable seal element is installed in a seal groove to thereby form a completed seal between static components being the housing of a rockdrill and an insert in the housing. The seal element is deformed to assume the shape of the seal groove. A rib in the seal groove digs into the seal element, whereby axial movement or dither of the seal element in the seal groove is restrained.
Abstract: A valveless percussive pneumatic drill includes a housing, a piston in the housing, reciprocating along the axis of the housing, a piston support bearing in the housing and an air distributor in the housing, the air distributor being mounted in the housing for flexible elastic movement therein, to permit slight misalignment of the piston with respect to the axis of the housing.
Abstract: A throttle lever system for operating a flushing system on a percussive, fluid-activated apparatus includes a fluid inlet port, passageways in the apparatus for exhaust fluid, a seal device for opening and closing the passageways, and a throttle lever system for operating the seal device, the throttle lever system including a one-piece throttle lever elastically and pivotally mounted on a pivot pin on the device to cantilever out over the seal device, whereby the lever elastically moves up and down into and out of contact with the seal device, in response to operator hand pressure.
Abstract: A device for use within a backhead of a down-the-hole percussive drill, for removing debris from a drillhole, includes a separator for separating water and other matter from the percussive fluid prior to the percussive fluid actuating the piston of the drill. The water and other matter are exhausted out the drill bit, to remove the debris. The device includes a one-way flow valve to prevent backflow of debris and water into the drillhead during periods when the percussive fluid flow ceases. The device can be added to existing drill backheads, or included as part of newly manufactured units.
Abstract: Apparatus and system for loading and unloading a load onto and from a load carrying device mounted on a vehicle which is capable of producing a significant lift of the load and changing the angular position of the load at different load elevations. A bellcrank supports the load carrying device. A first pin pivotally mounts the bellcrank to the vehicle. A second pin pivotally mounts the load carrying device to the bellcrank. A first power device pivots the bellcrank around the first pin and a second power device pivots the load carrying device around the second pin.
Abstract: A device for cleaning and lubricating an exterior surface of an asphalt compacting machine includes a support member removably attached to the machine. Positioned on the support member for easy access are a flexible scraper for cleaning the drum and a fluid spray system, for spraying and uniformly distributing a lubricating fluid onto the drum. Elastic spring means on the support member assures positive contact between the drum and the scraper and between the drum and the fluid distributor.
Abstract: A piston valve diaphragm for a percussion apparatus including a valve portion having a diaphragm bore and a fluid supply source. A piston having a first piston surface and a second piston surface are also included. A diaphragm is mounted in the diaphragm bore and is displaceable in a first direction which permits fluid communication between the fluid supply source and the first piston surface and limits fluid passage between the fluid supply source and the second piston surface. Displacement of the diaphragm in a second direction permits fluid communication between the fluid supply source and the second piston surface and limits fluid passage between the fluid supply and the first piston surface. The diaphragm may be formed entirely from a flexible material or may contain a rigid center portion with flexible edge portion.
Abstract: A fluid-activated, percussive, down-the-hole drill having a reversible bearing and bit combination for altering the volume of return reservoir exhaust fluid between a larger amount for deep hole drilling and a smaller amount for shallow hole drilling.
Abstract: An apparatus includes a vehicular mainframe having a vehicular longitudinal axis and a substructure mounted on the mainframe. The substructure has a substructure longitudinal axis and is tiltable relative to the vehicular mainframe about the substructure longitudinal axis. The apparatus includes a tower and a tower support rigidly secured to the substructure. The substructure longitudinal axis is approximately the same vertical height as an upper surface of the vehicular mainframe.
Abstract: A filter apparatus for a percussion device to be powered by fluid pressure, which when the apparatus is in an assembled position, comprises a filter recess formed within a housing encasing the percussion device. An assembly fastener is disposed within the recess. A first filter is disposed about the assembly fastener. A filter support is disposed about the first filter. A second filter is mounted around the filter support. Both the first and the second filter have a filtering gauge size, and the filtering gauge of the first filter exceeds the filtering gauge of the second filter.
Abstract: A clutch assembly transmits rotary motion in a percussive apparatus to a drill steel. The clutch assembly includes a first hub having a first cylindrical surface formed thereon. A second hub which is substantially rotationally coupled to the drill steel has a second cylindrical surface formed thereon. The second cylindrical surface is coaxial with the first cylindrical surface. A wrap spring engages a portion of both the first cylindrical surface and the second cylindrical surface, wherein relative rotary motion between the first hub and the second hub is permitted in a first direction and restricted in a second direction. The wrap spring clutch transmits motion supplied from a rifle bar assembly as well as a plunger bar arrangement.
