  • Patent number: 4069830
Abstract: A stream of moist tobacco is fed into one end of a rotating drum which is heated by steam circulating coils and wherein a current of heated air flows counter to the direction of tobacco travel. A portion of moisture-laden air issuing at the one end of the drum is evacuated into the atmosphere and the remaining portion of moisture-laden air is intercepted and recirculated into the other end of the drum by way of a duct which contains an adjustable device for mixing the recirculated portion of moisture-laden air with fresh air. The mixture is heated upstream of the other end of the drum, and the moisture content of dried tobacco is measured and compared with a desired moisture content. When the measured moisture content deviates from the desired moisture content, the rate of evacuation of moisture-laden air is changed simultaneously with the rate of admission of fresh air.

  • Patent number: 4055192
Abstract: Tobacco particles which escape from plain cigarettes and/or filter cigarettes in machines for the making of plain and filter cigarettes are partially separated from streams of suction air before such streams reach the main separator. This relieves the main separator so that the latter necessitates less frequent cleaning and/or replacement of filters. In a filter cigarette making machine with or without a main separator, one or more separators for reusable tobacco particles can be installed to collect reusable particles which escape at one, two or more stations where the escape of tobacco is likely and pronounced. Such separators employ suction fans, vessels below the respective units, and pipes which convey the contents of vessels to a tobacco removing device upstream of the fans.

  • Patent number: 4054145
Abstract: Particles of a continuous tobacco stream are intimately contacted with and thus conditioned by finely distributed solid or fluid additives in a rotary drum into which the additives are supplied by one or more spray nozzles. Tobacco particles are propelled into the drum by a rotary winnower or by an impeller nozzle which discharges a current of compressed air. The flight spans of tobacco particles can be varied by changing the speed of the winnower or by changing the pressure of air which issues from the impeller nozzle. The weight of tobacco which is being fed to the winnower or impeller nozzle per unit of time is measured, and the results of such measurements are used to regulate the flight spans of propelled tobacco particles and the quantity of additives which are admitted into the drum per unit of time.

  • Patent number: 4044659
Abstract: Apparatus for producing composite filter plugs for cigarettes or other smokers' products has two sets of conveyors which feed filter rod sections of different types to the flutes of a rotary assembly conveyor. The latter assembles the sections into groups each having a section of first and second type and moves the groups to an auxiliary conveyor which transports the groups sideways to successive pneumatic holders of a transfer conveyor. The transfer conveyor has two carriers which rotate about parallel axes and are coupled to each other by linkages, one for each holder. The linkages cause the holders to rotate relative to that carrier which supports the holders so that the orientation of holders remains unchanged during travel through 90.degree. or 270.degree. when the groups are taken over by successive increments of a web which is moved lengthwise and is draped around the resulting rod-like filler to form therewith a rod.
