Abstract: Surfactant-free emulsion coating compositions of superior film-forming properties are produced by a two-stage method comprising, in a first stage, forming a mixture of polymerizable monomers comprises of defined proportions of a carboxylic acid monomer, such as acrylic acid, and a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, polymerizaing said mixture, neutralizing the polymer product with a sufficient amount of an amine or base to make it water-dispersible and forming an emulsion of the polymer with water, then, in a second stage, forming a mixture of polymerizable monomers comprised of defined proportions of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and adding this monomer mixture and a polymerization catalyst to the emulsion produced in said first stage and heating the mixture thus formed to effect polymerization and produce the emulsion coating composition.
Abstract: Amino J Acid is reacted with alkali to produce J Acid. The use of a phenolic compound as a fluxing agent for the reaction mixture permits the use of higher temperatures to produce high yields of J Acid in shorter reaction times.

Abstract: An aqueous vinyl polymeric emulsion system prepared by polymerizing at least one polymerizable vinyl monomer in an aqueous emulsion system in the presence of an emulsifying agent, a polymerization catalyst and from about 0.1% to about 5%, by weight, based on the total weight of the monomer solids being polymerized, of a non-copolymerizable aminoplast resin.
Abstract: A normally liquid substantially fully methylolated, substantially fully mixed alkylated glycoluril derivative consisting essentially of dimethoxymethyl diethoxymethyl glycoluril is a highly effective cross-linking agent for both water-based and organic solvent-based resin coating compositions.
Abstract: Chitosan is used to improve the flat crush resistance of corrugating medium. A solution of chitosan in dilute acid is added to corrugating medium pulp containing at least about 0.05%, based on the dry fiber weight, of spent semichemical pulping liquor. The corrugating medium pulp is then formed into corrugating medium sheets, dried and manufactured into corrugating medium.
Abstract: A methylated, methylolated melamine composition having a certain combined formaldehyde content, a certain combined methanol content in the form of methoxymethyl groups, a certain -NH content and a certain content of a free methylol groups, the process of preparing the same and the use of such a melamine composition in admixture with other polymeric materials to provide coating compositions.
Abstract: A gel-forming composition of matter comprising an aqueous solution of a mixture of certain percentages of monomeric acrylamide and monomeric N,N' methylenebisacrylamide and a polymerization catalyst and containing certain percentages of an unfired natural diatomaceous earth having a certain particle size is used in treating earthen formations around the joints of sewer pipes, whereby fluid loss from the composition into the earthen formation is substantially reduced.
Abstract: A process for inhibiting scale formation using a low molecular weight hydrolyzed polyacrylamide prepared by a process involving simultaneously and continuously charging separate streams of acrylamide monomer, ammonium persulfate (as catalyst) and mercaptoalkanoic acid (as chain transfer agent) to a reaction zone containing water under reflux, the rate of charging being such that the heat of polymerization is sufficient to maintain reflux in the reaction zone without exceeding the capacity of the condenser to remove the heat of reaction, and then reacting the polymer product with sufficient aqueous caustic to hydrolyze from about 60 to 90% of the amide groups in the polymer product.

Abstract: Certain solid dye bases which are precursors of acrylic fiber dyes and which contain a tertiary nitrogen atom are effectively quaternized in high yield and purity in a "dry state" quaternization process comprising contacting the dye base with an essentially stoichiometric amount of an alkylating agent at a temperature of 30.degree.-90.degree. C., said alkylating agent being added to said dye base gradually at a rate such that the reaction mixture is a free-flowing solid throughout the reaction.
Abstract: Crystal Violet Lactone (CVL) is produced in high yield and highly pure form by a process comprising condensing Michlers hydrol with 3-dimethylaminobenzoic acid to form leuco CVL, extracting the reaction mixture containing the leuco CVL with an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, such as toluene, or a mixture of such a solvent and a water-immiscible alkane, such as heptane, to remove impurities therefrom and treating the extracted reaction mixture with an inorganic oxidizing agent to convert the leuco CVL to CVL.
Abstract: The invention has now been made that polychlorinated 1,3- and 1,4-benzene diamines produce cured epoxy resins with better moisture resistance, and higher glass transition temperatures on exposure to high humidity, than known aromatic diamine curing agents. The resulting cured epoxy resins are useful in fibrous composites, structural adhesives and coatings, where high heat distortion and good moisture resistance is desired.
