Abstract: A Faraday rotator for rotating a plane of polarization of polarized light, said Faraday rotator having an optical element comprising a rod which is comprised of an optically transmitting composition comprising from about 15 wt. % to about 50 wt. % germanium, from about 5 wt. % to about 20 wt. % arsenic, and from about 30 wt. % to about 80 wt. % selenium. This Faraday rotator is especially useful in an optical isolator for preventing feedback of transmitted light waves.
Abstract: An improved electrical connector which has improved durability and stability when exposed to low temperature the connector comprises alternating layers of electrically conductive and non-conductive material. The electrically conductive and non-conductive layers each include a silicone-containing material of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is methyl, vinyl, or phenyl, R.sub.2 is methyl or vinyl, and X+Y+Z equals 0 to about 2 million.
Abstract: Door and hinge construction for overhead doors is disclosed for use with sliding door panels, which includes combination hinge and roller housings engaged with and located at each side of the door panels, serving to retain the panels together, and which carry rollers which ride in tracks outside the door panel, with hinge and seal members engaged with the panels between the combination housings providing for hinged door movement and sealing against the entry of dirt and water.

Abstract: Prior to upgrading a viscous feed by visbreaking, at least a portion of the feed is treated to remove a heavy phase in specified amounts, whereby the severity of the visbreaking may be increased. The Shell Hot Filtration number of the visbreaking product is reduced by at least 75%, compared to visbreaking of untreated feed at some severity.

Abstract: Two immiscible liquids are vaporized in heat exchanger tubes in a manner such that each tube receives both liquids and neither liquid is completely vaporized in the tubes.
Abstract: A cigar or cigarette holder capable of receiving a cigar or cigarette and for filtering smoke generated from the cigar or cigarette. The holder has three chambers. The first chamber defined by the space between a perforated tubular member, concentrically situated around a perforated inner tubular member, and the inner tubular member. The first chamber is substantially filled with a filter material. The second and third chambers are within the inner tubular member, substantially coaxially aligned and separated by a wall having an aperture to transfer ash from the second chamber to the third chamber.
Abstract: A solid stick composition, in a container, is moved through a protective tunnel wherein the stick is cooled to effect solidification, remelted to fill any void in the stick, cooled to solidify, and polished, by heating and cooling, with filtered air flowing through the tunnel to remove heat therefrom.
Abstract: A process for oxidizing a hydrocarbon to maleic anhydride using a mixed oxide catalyst of vanadium and phosphorous prepared by a procedure including pretreating the dried catalyst precursor of the said mixed oxides in finely divided form with an acid solution.

Abstract: Homogeneous assay for determining thyroid binding capacity by use of a fluorescent T.sub.3 tracer, such as T.sub.3 coupled to a fluorescein dye through a radical derived from L-lysine.
Abstract: An adhesive composition consisting essentially of a solution in a suitable solvent of a ricinoleate urethane polyol and a chlorinated polyvinyl chloride in which the chlorinated polyvinyl chloride represents no more than approximately 90% by weight of the combined polyol and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride.
Abstract: A threshold having a vertically adjustable weatherstrip including a unitary base member and a horizontally slidable adjustment means in which the height of the flexible weatherstrip may be controlled to engage the bottom of a door.
Abstract: A chlorohydrin, such as glycerol dichlorohydrin is saponified in two stages, with the first stage being carried out in a high back-mix saponification reactor, and the second stage being carried out in a plug-flow saponification reactor. The use of two different stages improves both selectivity and yield.
Abstract: Production of halohydrins; in particular, chlorohydrins by reaction of tertiary alkyl hypohalite and olefinically unsaturated compound in the presence of water and a metal selected from Group II-A, II-B, III-A, III-B, IV-A, IV-B, or V-A of the Periodic Table. The use of such metals improves the production of halohydrin.

Abstract: In a fluidized bed system, including a fluidized bed vessel and a separate stripping vessel below the fluidized bed wherein solids from the fluidized bed are introduced into the stripping vessel, there is provided a vent line from the top of the stripping vessel to the fluidized bed for venting gas from the stripper to the fuidized bed. A portion of the solids introduced into the stripper are carried into the vent line to maintain the static head between the top portion of the fluidized bed and the stripping vessel.
Abstract: There is disclosed a mounting assembly for positioning a roll of sheet material within a dispenser including oppositely aligned receiving sockets wherein said roll of sheet material is formed on a hollow core, comprising a first arbor member formed of flange member, a core insertion member coaxially mounted on the flange member and positionable in the hollow core of the roll of sheet material and a socket insertion member coaxially positioned on the flange member on a side opposite the core insertion member and positionably in one of the oppositely aligned sockets in the dispenser and a second arbor member comprised of a flange member with a centrally positioned orifice, mounted to a core insertion member having a cylindrically shaped chamber, positionable in the hollow core of the roll of sheet material, a socket insertion member including a collar disposed within the chamber of the core insertion member and having an end thereof extending through the orifice of the flange member and positionable in one of s
Abstract: There is disclosed in an improved three-way valve with an improved valve engagement assembly comprised of first ball members mounted on a valve shaft and second ball members mounted on a control shaft whereby rotation of the control shaft causes the first ball members to contact the second ball members to move a valve assembly from a first position to a second position.
Abstract: A propel-repel solid stick dispenser for deodorants, anti-perspirants and other cosmetics, medicaments or the like in which the external container is closed, preferably by use of an integral, one-piece body, except for the opening for application, which opening may be sealed by means of a detachable cap thereby securing the dispensable material against air deterioration or evaporation and including means for advancing and retracting the stick of dispensable material by one-handed fingertip rotational manipulation by the hand holding the dispenser.
Abstract: An improved cover and can assembly having a novel interlocking assembly comprised of a two "ball and socket" configuration thereby providing a greater surface or contact area between the cover or lid and the container. The novel interlocking assembly provides a snap-type closing which insures a tighter fit with far less chance of opening with the cover being provided with an annular groove including rib members located near the edge of the cover with the rib members providing means for separating the cover from the container.
