Patent number: 6755366Abstract: An insertion mechanism brings an insert yarn into association with a base yarn in an automatic winder. The insertion mechanism comprises an insertion guide for delivering the insert yarn to a predetermined location on the winder, and a tensioning device for maintaining tension on the insert yarn. In another aspect, an automatic winder is configured or modified for direct insertion. In contrast to conventional creel frame insertion, the direct insertion technique of the invention avoids the need for a separate step of back-winding, and allows the automatic doffing feature on the winder to be enabled.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: June 29, 2004Assignee: Solutia Inc.Inventor: James E. Polk

Patent number: 6660887Abstract: An improved process for the production of 3-dimethylaminopropylamine in high (>99%) purity from N,N-dimethylaminopropionitrile utilizing a low pressure hydrogenation process is described. The basic process comprises contacting the nitrile with hydrogen at low pressure in the presence of a sponge nickel catalyst under conditions sufficient to effect the conversion of the nitrile to the primary amine product. The improvement in the process resides in a combination of carrying out the hydrogenation process at low pressures and temperatures in the presence of a catalytic amount of caustic base in order to give an improved selectivity of greater than 99.60% of DMAPN to DMAPA.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2002Date of Patent: December 9, 2003Assignee: Solutia Inc.Inventors: Gregory J. Ward, Bryan C. Blanchard

Patent number: 6630087Abstract: The present invention relates to a textile filament with a contact angle greater than or equal to 90 degrees. Such filaments are either water-repellent or resistant to chemicals, and yarns made therefrom readily processible into fabrics. In a detailed embodiment, the filaments are water-repellent and comprise a first longitudinally-extending component comprising at least one polymer selected from nylon, polyester, polypropylene, or other filament-forming polymer, and a second longitudinally-extending component, comprising a halogenated polymer. In a second detailed embodiment, the filaments are chemical-resistant and comprise a first longitudinally-extending component comprising at least one fiber-forming polymer and a second longitudinally-extending component comprising an olefin copolymer. In both embodiments, the second longitudinally-extending component is present on the exterior of the first longitudinally-extending component.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2001Date of Patent: October 7, 2003Assignee: Solutia Inc.Inventors: J. Gregory Hancock, W. Keith Fisher, John Elliott, David B. Horn

Patent number: 6562896Abstract: A polyamide composition including (a) at least one polyamide other than nylon 2,2, or a copolymer of at least two polyamide repeating units, neither of which is nylon 2,2, (b) melamine cyanurate, and (c) a nucleating agent such as nylon 2,2 in an amount effective to cause nucleation of the polyamide of (a), has good flame retarding properties and relatively short set-up times in molding processes.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1999Date of Patent: May 13, 2003Assignee: Solutia Inc.Inventors: Bruce A. Lysek, Russell F. Dunn, Cary J. Kostakes

Patent number: 5242874Abstract: The present invention refers to a process for whitening kaolinitic clays by adding an aqueous acid solution containing sodium bisulfite and atomized aluminum powder, thereby causing the reduction of the contaminating iron ions present in the kaolin, resulting in a considerable increase in its whiteness index as well as a reduction of the particle size of the product obtained.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 1990Date of Patent: September 7, 1993Assignee: Alcoa Aluminio S.A.Inventors: Fabio M.
