  • Patent number: 8249150
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing quantization during video compression, such as within an MPEG-2 encoder. Inter-quantization is particularly described, although the teachings may be applied to intra-quantization as well. Computationally intensive portions of the quantization process are split into multiple components in response to differing execution probability. A first component is executed within each quantization iteration, and preferably is performed in parallel, such as using SIMD processing. At least one additional component, such as a second component, is serially processed in response to detecting a condition that does not arise with each loop iteration. One configuration replaces division operations with a combination of multiply and shift operations, while making extended use of table lookup procedures to reduce processing overhead.

  • Patent number: 8237324
Abstract: A bistable electroactive polymer transducer is provided for electrically actuated deformation of rigid electroactive polymer members. The polymers have glass transition temperatures (Tg) above ambient conditions and turn into rubbery elastomers above Tg and have high dielectric breakdown strength in the rubbery state. They can be electrically deformed to various rigid shapes with maximum strain greater than 100% and as high as 400%. The actuation is made bistable by cooling below Tg to preserve the deformation. The dielectric actuation mechanism includes a pair of compliant electrodes in contact with a dielectric elastomer which deforms when a voltage bias is applied between the pair of electrodes. In some of the configurations, the dielectric elastomer is also a shape memory polymer. The deformations of such bistable electroactive polymers can be repeated rapidly for numerous cycles.

  • Patent number: 8233541
Abstract: Method and apparatus for improving the quality of super-resolution video imaging by suppressing ringing artifacts, reducing high-frequency noise, reducing blocking artifacts, and smoothing out jagged edges of the image to generate pictures that appear cleaner with less edge degradation. The method operates in a recursive manner within a sequence of low resolution images. Conventional SR processing is primarily enhanced within the invention by adding an artifact suppression section which creates a high frequency component signal ?SRi having significantly reduced artifacts therein achieving higher quality super-resolution image output. The method can be applied to images and image sequences (video) in monochrome or color and in any desired pixel format. The method can be implemented within image processing devices, in particular those containing programming for executing the described method steps.

  • Patent number: 8228400
Abstract: Simulating a long exposure-time image from a sequence of short exposure-time images captured at slightly different times. The sequence of images is combined in a temporal integration process to create a long exposure image that simulates the output from a still camera, steadied by a tripod, whose light-sensitive material has been exposed to the same scene from the time of the beginning of the first input image of the sequence to the last image of the input sequence. The method overcomes limitations of hand-held video and image recording devices, allowing the user to easily create effects normally associated with high-end digital still cameras under expert control.

  • Patent number: 8228990
Abstract: An apparatus and method for spatial encoding of intra-predictions for a current block of a video sequence without the need to average across a number of best template matches. The encoder identifies and sorts the best template matches for the current block within previously coded and reconstructed blocks which neighbor the current block of video. In response to determining actual predictive error for the sorted list of matches, a selector is generated identifying which of the sorted templates is optimal. The selector is then communicated for receipt by the decoder, which is adapted for performing the same template matching and sorting, which is followed by selection of the optimum candidate in response to using the selector. In response to the selector information the decoder can provide optimum template matching without the compromise or overhead of taking averages across the best template candidates.

  • Patent number: 8199823
Abstract: Rate-QP estimation for a B picture is disclosed which involves: providing an input group of pictures (GOP); selecting an input B picture within the GOP; and outputting, to a computer readable medium, a bit rate corrected Rate-QP, R(QP), for the input B picture. The outputting step may involve calculating intra/non-intra luma and chroma Rate-QP estimates from corresponding intra/non-intra luma and chroma histograms; offsetting the intra/non-intra chroma Rate-QP estimate to form respective offset intra/non-intra chroma estimates; and setting a bit rate corrected Rate-QP for the input B picture to a corrected sum of the previous estimates. The histograms are formed using an input of the lowest SATD forward, backward, and bidirectional prediction coefficients, and the intra prediction coefficients, where an intra/non-intra mode is selected, which results in a lowest SATD for each macroblock in the GOP. The methods may be implemented into a computer program, possibly resident in advanced video encoders.

  • Patent number: 8199248
Abstract: Apparatus and method for electronically estimating focusing distance between a camera (still and/or video camera) and a subject. Images at different focal positions of a calibration target are collected with distances between subject positions. In one aspect, histogram matching is performed to reduce noise error. A focus matching model is then generated in response to detected blur differences between successive images of the calibration target. The focus matching model is preferably converted to a polynomial equation of a desired order to smooth out image collection noise. The focus matching model is stored for access during operation. In use, the distance to subject is estimated in response to capturing images, detecting blur differences between the images and entering the blur difference information into the matching model.

  • Patent number: 8194736
Abstract: A method and apparatus to compress video data to smaller size and embed extra information into the compressed data using the integrated lossy and lossless compressions is described. The method can be used to compress reference frames of a video codec (coder/decoder) combines codec where the small noise is critical and to reduce bus bandwidth. Data transfer between an encoder and an external frame memory connected via an external bus in a video codec is reduced by compressing data from the encoder prior to inputting into the frame memory over the external bus, and decompressing the compressed data from the frame memory after retrieving over the external bus. Reference frames are compressed to variable size without causing any considerable artifact to reduce bus bandwidth between the encoder core and external memory. In the method, lossy and lossless compression is integrated to maximize the compression efficiency.

  • Patent number: 8189643
Abstract: A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) is described using a sub-wavelength grating (SWG) structure that has a very broad reflection spectrum and very high reflectivity. The grating comprises segments of high and low refractive index materials with an index differential between the high and low index materials. By way of example, a SWG reflective structure is disposed over a low index cavity region and above another reflective layer (either SWG or DBR). In one embodiment, the SWG structure is movable, such as according to MEMS techniques, in relation to the opposing reflector to provide wavelength selective tuning. The SWG-VCSEL design is scalable to form the optical cavities for a range of SWG-VCSELs at different wavelengths, and wavelength ranges.

  • Patent number: 8184657
Abstract: A system and method for switching data packet traffic distribution across diverse transmission medium according to detected quality of service characteristics for a given data packet rate from server to client. It should be recognized that diverse medium are not interdependent with regard to fading or signal strength considerations. One mode of switching comprises switching all the data packets from transmission on a first medium to transmission over a second diverse medium. In a second mode of switching the distribution is changed according to a media-time coding mechanism in which typically data is being transmitted simultaneously across more than one of the multiple diverse medium. The data packet transmissions preferably comprise audio-video data packet streams, such as MPEG-2 streams. By way of example, the diverse transmission medium may comprise a wireless connection (i.e. WiFi) used in combination with a power-line network connection, such as within a home network.

  • Patent number: 8168126
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus and method to remove hydrogen sulfide and siloxanes from biogas and destroy the contaminants in microwave reactors. Hydrogen sulfide and siloxane are removed from biogas using an adsorbent media such as activated carbon. The media is regenerated in a microwave reactor where the hydrogen sulfide and siloxane are removed in a sweep gas. In one process, siloxane is oxidized to silicon dioxide in a second microwave reactor and removed with a filter. Hydrogen sulfide if first oxidized to sulfur dioxide, then reduced to sulfur in a third microwave reactor and removed with a filter. In another process, siloxane is combined with water to form silicon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide is reduced to elemental sulfur in a microwave reactor. These reactants are removed with a filter. The remaining sweep gas containing hydrogen and low molecular weight hydrocarbons is returned to the biogas stream.
