  • Patent number: 5925346
Abstract: A novel type of insect control agent and methods for controlling insect pests are described. The agent consists of a vector, such as a baculovirus of the polyhedral inclusion body type, containing in an antisense orientation cDNA sequence which has been derived from the complete sense sequence of a gene which is essential for the growth and development of the host from which the sequence is derived. In order for the insect control agent to exert its effect the insect pests which are to be controlled must be susceptible to the vector. Specifically described are the sequences from Choristoneura fumiferana and the human c-myc gene as well the methods of production and use of these agents.

  • Patent number: 5724186
Abstract: A device for use in vehicular rear view mirrors which comprises a mirror and a vibrator so arranged to propagate pressure waves or vibrations in the mirror primarily perpendicular to the plane of the mirror. The vibrations are of sufficient magnitude as to cause water droplets to leave the surface of the mirror by atomization of the fine droplets or by the running together of droplets and subsequent dripping off by gravity. The bonds between the mirror face and other solid deposits including ice are quickly broken allowing the debris to fall clear, thus enhancing the clarity of vision of the mirror. The vibrators are ceramic piezoelectric transducers mounted in a Bi-Morph configuration directly on the back of the mirror.

  • Patent number: 5631507
Abstract: An electric power generator has a housing having an inner cavity having a center and an inner circumferential surface spaced at a varying radial extent from the center. A magnetic flux generator has a body offset from a point of rotation. The magnetic flux generator is rotatable at the center. The magnetic flux generator has a central passageway for slidably receiving a shaft with a magnet. The magnetic flux generator has a coil mounted about the central passageway in an inductive relation with the magnet. A spring is disposed between the shaft and magnetic flux generator for urging the shaft into contact with the inner circumferential surface whereby as the housing rotates, the magnetic flux generator rotates relative to the housing urging the shaft to travel along the inner circumferential surface causing relative back and forth motion of the shaft through the passageway inducing a voltage in the coil.

  • Patent number: 5626349
Abstract: A sealing ring for fitting between and sealing an annular space between a spigot end of a length of pipe and a bell-shaped end of another length of pipe which are slid into each other to form a pipe joint. The sealing ring comprises an annular main body having a first surface for engaging the spigot end and a second surface for engaging the bell-shaped end during the formation of the pipe joint. A thin rupturable membrane of a thickness less than 0.008 inches is attached to the second surface about the circumference of the annular main body defining an annular cavity. A lubricant is disposed in the annular cavity, either between the second surface and the rupturable membrane or in an encapsulated cavity formed by the membrane whereby, when the spigot end and the bell-shaped end are slid into each other to form a pipe joint, the rupturable membrane is ruptured and the lubricant is released.

  • Patent number: 5605247
Abstract: The mat of the present invention has a flexible sheet having a raised peripheral rim and a central opening. A first receptacle has a periphery about an upwardly extending opening which is joined about the central opening. A removable receptacle is disposed in and removable from the first receptacle. The flexible sheet is foldable for storage within the first receptacle. The first receptacle may be closed by the removable receptacle. The removable receptacle enables the solid matter and liquids collecting on the flexible sheet to be carried away for disposal.
