  • Patent number: 5471854
Abstract: An accumulator for use in an automobile, has an inner housing located within an outer housing. The inner housing has a channel formed therein, such that a fluid-tight flow path which goes down one side across the bottom and back up the other side to an exit orifice is defined. A cap having inlet and outlet orifices therethrough is secured to the outer housing and seals both the inner and the outer housings to prevent any leakage of any fluid.

  • Patent number: 5464066
Abstract: A method and apparatus for filling holes which have been made in the ground, by causing a machine which includes a rotary rake at its extreme front end to pass over the ground. In the case in which the ground area planted with grass is a racecourse or equestrian training ground, the machine is preferably driven over the course in a direction opposite to the direction in which the horses have been moving, the rotary rake being driven so as to rotate with a forward velocity tangential to the ground. The machine also includes a soil consolidating device disposed behind the rotary rake to tamp the soil which is replaced in the holes by the rake so that the soil will remain in place.

  • Patent number: 5458300
Abstract: A method of controlling the attitude of a satellite according to which the direction of a predetermined celestial object is defined in a frame of reference related to the satellite, the instantaneous angular velocity vector of the satellite is detected and, by means of an actuating assembly, torques are applied to the satellite which are defined by a control law so as to rotate the satellite about the direction while orienting an aiming axis related to the satellite in the same direction, involves defining the direction of the predetermined celestial object in a frame of reference related to the satellite by a first quantity representing a first angle measured between an axis of sight and the projection of the direction onto a first reference plane containing the axis of sight and by a second quantity representing a second angle defined by the axis of sight and the projection of the direction onto a second reference plane containing the axis of sight, the second angle being calculated from the first angle and

  • Patent number: 5452931
Abstract: An automobile grille which is selectively chromium plated so as to promote the flexural properties of the grille. By optimizing the flexural properties of the grille, the grille is more readily capable of withstanding a frontal impact without sustaining permanent damage. Preferably, the chromium plating is selectively deposited on exposed surfaces of the grille so as to minimize the detrimental effect which a hard and brittle chromium plating has on the flexural modulus of the grille. As a result, the grille is more readily able to flex under the load of an impact directed into the grille from the front of the automobile. In addition, chromium plating is deposited on surfaces of the grille which predominantly see compressive loading, so as to reduce the likelihood that the chromium plating will crack in tension. The grille is particularly suitable for mounting flush with an impact-absorbing bumper, such that the grille is capable of resiliently deflecting with the stroke of the bumper.

  • Patent number: 5451415
Abstract: A method for dejuicing grapes uses a dejuicer comprises a closed tank provided with a dejuicer grid and an inflatable membrane in the tank which is pressurized to force juice out of the harvested grapes through the grid. A conveyor in the tank remove the dejuicer grapes from the tank. Harvested grapes are placed in said tank and the juice is allowed to flow naturally. The inflatable membrane mounted in the tank is then pressurized to force out further juice through the grid and the juice is collected from the tank. The membrane is then depressurized and the tank is emptied by actuating the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5433712
Abstract: A hypodermic syringe assembly which is self-sheathing in that use of the syringe activates a locking mechanism which automatically and irreversibly causes a hypodermic needle to be retracted into an outer sheath. As a result, the syringe assembly is automatically and permanently made safe to handle by the user. In addition, reuse of the syringe is prevented by the locking mechanism, in that the locking mechanism serves to puncture the syringe if an attempt is made to reuse the syringe. The syringe includes a tubular-shaped sheathing member having an apertured end through which the hypodermic needle extends when the syringe is in use. Telescopically disposed within the sheathing member is a tubular-shaped insert having one end which is open to receive a plunger, with the other end being provided with an aperture and boss for receiving the hypodermic needle.

  • Patent number: 5431606
Abstract: An automotive final drive assembly which utilizes a worm gear system for speed reduction between a vehicle's engine and drive wheels. The final drive assembly is capable of reducing the high speed from the engine and delivering it to the vehicle's drive wheels, all within an extremely compact space. Furthermore, the large contact area between the thread of the worm and the teeth of the worm gear provides for a high load capacity with relatively low friction, such that the final drive assembly is efficient and operates at lower temperatures. Finally, the worm gear is a ball worm gear having a spheroidal shape. As a result, the structure of the final drive assembly is simplified and suitably rigid to maintain the threads of the worm in mesh with the teeth of the worm gear.

  • Patent number: 5429459
Abstract: A threaded hole (20) in a workpiece (22) is formed by rapidly spinning an elongated tool (24) having a drill point (64) at one end, at least one longitudinally extending flute (80) having thread milling faces (84) for milling the thread to be formed, and wherein the tool (24) is first moved axially to carry the drill point (64) against and into the workpiece (22) to form a hole (66), then is displaced radially a distance equal to the thread depth to be formed, then is moved orbitally around the hole (66) to mill threads therein, then is displaced back to the center of the hole (20) and then is retracted from the hole (20). To form a helical thread in the hole (20), the tool (24) is shifted axially one thread pitch during the orbital movement. A thread milling drill head (26) is disclosed for chucking the tool (24) and shifting it through the aforesaid movements.

  • Patent number: 5419157
Abstract: An accumulator for use in an air-conditioning system wherein a refrigerant fluid is circulated. The accumulator embodies an enclosed housing defining an internal vapor chamber, an inlet tube, an outlet tube having a vapor inlet end in an upper portion of the vapor chamber, and a baffle member located within the housing between the upper and lower portions and within the vapor chamber to impede the flow of incoming partially vaporized fluid causing it to circulate within the chamber and allowing the refrigerant vapor to rise to the upper portion of the vapor chamber and to flow through the outlet tube. The baffle member is an integral part of the housing, being formed at the open end of one of two cup-shaped housing members and turning inwardly to provide a generally ring-shaped baffle member, with the cup-shaped members being joined at their open ends to complete the enclosed housing.

  • Patent number: 5409158
Abstract: A framing system and framing device for assembling and welding a body-in-white utilizes completely separate framing and welding operations, which are typically intermixed in conventional framing systems. The framing device is a unitary frame structure within which an underbody, side frames and other body components can each be supported and accurately positioned with respect to each other prior to the welding operation. The framing device includes a cart which serves as the base and main support for the framing device, and an upper body support member. Using an appropriate number of clamping devices, the net positions of the body components which constitute the body-in-white are properly established and maintained, such that gate fixtures are unnecessary during the welding operation. The structure of the framing device provides considerable access to the body-in-white supported within the interior of the framing device, such that a greater number of welding guns can be used during the welding operation.

  • Patent number: 5394728
Abstract: A method for forming a saddle for a U-bolt clamp assembly which is suitable for clamping together the components of an automotive exhaust system. The method is capable of forming a saddle which exhibits sufficient strength and rigidity in order to generate a clamping load which can reliably join the exhaust components, while also being sufficiently resilient to accommodate variations in pipe size and hardness so as to reliably seal the joint formed by the components. The method of this invention produces a saddle structure which is relatively uncomplicated, and can be manufactured from a one-piece blank utilizing a series of conventional forming operations that offer a relatively low cost manufacturing process suitable for use in mass production.
