Patent number: 6576467Abstract: A method for DNA reassembly after random fragmentation, and its application to mutagenesis of nucleic acid sequences by in vitro or in vivo recombination is described. In particular, a method for the production of nucleic acid fragments or polynucleotides encoding mutant proteins is described. The present invention also relates to a method of repeated cycles of mutagenesis, shuffling and selection which allow for the directed molecular evolution in vitro or in vivo of proteins.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2000Date of Patent: June 10, 2003Assignee: Maxygen, Inc.Inventor: Willem P. C. Stemmer

Patent number: 6440284Abstract: The present invention provides methods of electrophoretically separating macromolecular species, as well as compositions and systems useful in carrying out such methods. Specifically, the methods of the present invention comprise providing a substrate that has at least a first capillary channel disposed therein. The surface of the channel has a first surface charge associated therewith, and is filled with a water soluble surface adsorbing polymer solution that bears a net charge that is the same as the charge on the capillary surface.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1999Date of Patent: August 27, 2002Assignee: Caliper Technologies Corp.Inventor: Robert S. Dubrow

Patent number: 6399855Abstract: This invention relates to a method for improving the efficacy of a plant breeding program by selectively altering the average of a quantitative phenotypic trait in a plant population. The method employs statistical models to predict the association of genetic markers with a desired phenotypic trait. These models allow the association to be extrapolated to the progeny of the plants tested as well as plants in other families within the breeding population. After the statistical association has been determined, the genetic markers which associate with quantitative trait loci can be used to screen for plants with the desired genetic markers to use as progenitors of an F1 seed population. Alternatively, after the alleles which associate with a QTL have been identified, the coding sequences of at least one of the alleles can be cloned and introduced into a plant to create a transgenic plant line.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1998Date of Patent: June 4, 2002Assignee: Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.Inventor: William D. Beavis

Patent number: 6129826Abstract: The present invention generally provides an apparatus for enhancing transport and direction of materials in fluidic systems, which systems utilize electroosmotic (E/O) flow systems, to affect that transport and direction. The apparatus generally comprises providing an effective concentration of at least one zwitterionic compound in the fluid containing the material that is to be transported or directed.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1999Date of Patent: October 10, 2000Assignee: Caliper Technologies Corp.Inventors: Theo T. Nikiforov, Sang Jeong
