    Abstract: A geodesic slotted cylindrical (GSC) antenna having a shaped elevation pattern and a narrow or shaped azimuth beam that can be scanned 360.degree. in the azimuth plane. The azimuth radiation pattern of the GSC antenna can be reconfigured through the use of interchangeable beam forming feed networks. The GSC antenna comprises a parallel plate waveguide formed by spaced-apart inner and outer cylinders constructed from conductive material. Radiation occurs from a stack of circumferential slots in the outer cylinder. By varying the slot spacing with the azimuth angle, the elevation pattern can be altered as a function of the azimuth angle. The GSC antenna can be excited by a number of equally spaced probes on a circle at the base of the cylinders. The feed radius is typically smaller than the outer cylinder's radius to minimize the number of active components and to minimize the number of spurious ray paths that can wrap around inside the cylinder's parallel plate region.

    Abstract: In an electronic word processing system environment, a system and method for verifying the accuracy of the grammatical composition of a sentence in the background. While the word processor is in edit mode, i.e., the user is entering data or commands, it is determined when there is an idle period. An idle period is when the user is not entering data or commands. During an idle period, a sentence is extracted from the electronic document. It is determined whether the sentence is of proper grammatical composition. If the sentence does not have proper grammatical composition, then an error indication is displayed to the user in the context of the electronic document. These tasks may be repeated for each sentence in the document until the entire document has been proofed or the idle period ends. When the user selects the error indication in the document, a pop-up menu is displayed beneath the sentence containing the error.

A group of code sets associated with a particular type and brand of controllable device are selected from a database of code sets stored in the memory of the remote control unit. The commands of each code set in the group of code sets are compared to identify similarities and dissimilarities between command formats within each respective code set. The user tests a command and provides feedback to the remote control unit regarding the results of such testing. When the testing of a command is successful, the remote control unit eliminates code sets containing a command format that is dissimilar to the format of the command that was successfully tested. By eliminating code sets from the group of code sets and testing other commands, the remote control unit eliminates all but one code set.

Multiple users access a spreadsheet stored in a disk file and make independent changes to the spreadsheet. Changes are stored in respective memory change logs on each user's computer. When a user performs a save operation, the contents of the memory change log are appended to a disk change log in the disk file. When each user performs a save operation, each user's changes, as maintained in each respective memory change log, are appended to the disk change log. Conflicting changes that cannot simultaneously exist in the spreadsheet in the disk file are identified and resolved by allowing the user to select the winning action or automatically selecting the most recent action as the winning action. Losing actions in the memory change log are deleted and losing actions in the disk change log are effectively canceled by applying an inverse action to the losing action.

    Abstract: Routing information between an origination module and a destination module using a routing architecture. After an origination module (OM) receives information, a packet is transmitted to a routing architecture (RA) for routing to a destination module (DM) designated by the router packet. The RA interprets the router packet and adaptively routes the router packet to the DM so that the router packet is quickly processed by the DM. If the DM's queue is empty and the DM is not processing any other packets, the RA places the router packet in the queue and the DM reads its queue to process the router packet. If there is another router packet being processed by the DM, the RA adapts by placing the router packet in the queue. Once processing of the other router packet is complete, the DM processes the router packet in the queue. If there is already another router packet pending within the DM's queue, the RA adapts by creating another DM in memory to process the router packet.
