  • Patent number: 4521267
Abstract: There is disclosed a composite label web and method of labeling. The composite label web has a flexible, longitudinally extending carrier web with cuts to provide feed registration, flexible labels carried on the carrier web, non-tacky adhesive releasably adhering the labels at their undersides to the carrier web, a longitudinally extending line of weakening spaced between side edges of the labels and dividing the labels into detachably connected first and second label parts, pressure sensitive adhesive on the outer sides of the first label parts, and flexible masking material adhered to and masking off the pressure sensitive adhesive on the first label parts. The disclosed method can be practiced using a hand-held labeler which effects printing on the second label parts, effects separation of the labels from the carrier web at its delaminator and dispenses the labels. When the masking material is removed, the first label part can be adhered to the underside of a marginal side edge of a tag.

  • Patent number: 4508252
Abstract: There is disclosed web feeding apparatus and method for feeding a web from a web roll to a utilization device. The paying out of the web from the web roll into a U-shaped buffer loop is assisted by a pair of cooperating feed rolls which engage the web along the buffer loop. When the loop decreases to a certain extent, a sensing member causes the feed rolls to rotate to pay additional web material out of the web roll until the loop has increased to a certain extent. The web material extends from the buffer loop over the web roll and is guided to the utilization device, for example, a printer. The feed rolls can be caused to rotate when a manually engageable lever is moved in one direction. Alternatively the feed rolls can be separated and caused to rotate when the member is moved in the opposite direction. The apparatus also includes a reel assembly having a reel for handling web rolls having a variety of different widths.

  • Patent number: 4502383
Abstract: There is disclosed a multi-line print head. In one embodiment, one line of the print head has a series of printing bands and another line has a printing member of generally U-shaped configuration. The printing bands and the printing members have printing characters disposed in a common printing plane or print surface and the printing characteristics of the printing bands and the printing member are substantially the same. The print head has two or more supports on which the printing bands and the printing member are supported. The print head also has a pair of side plates which straddle the supports, the printing bands and the printing member. The printing member can be readily inserted onto or removed from its related support member even after the print head has been assembled. In another embodiment, a U-shaped printing member is supported by a pair of supports.

  • Patent number: 4498389
Abstract: There is disclosed label printing and applying apparatus by which labels are successively printed and applied to merchandise. The apparatus feeds pressure sensitive labels mounted on a web of supporting material to a printing zone and to a delaminating zone. An applicator disposed downstream of the delaminating zone is used to apply the labels to merchandise.

  • Patent number: 4497682
Abstract: There is disclosed a hand-held labeler having a print head with electrically selectable printing elements for printing and applying pressure sensitive labels. The labeler has a housing with a handle and structure for mounting a roll of pressure sensitive labels releasably carried on a carrier web. The labeler has a movable section which mounts a keyboard and a control circuit on a circuit board. The control circuit controls the printing elements. Labels are printed by the printing elements as the carrier web is advanced, and labels are delaminated at a delaminator and dispensed into label applying relation to an applicator. The print head is mounted on a support and is continuously spring-urged toward the platen. Movement of the print head toward the platen is limited to prevent damage. The support and the print head can be moved away from the platen from the outside of the labeler to facilitate threading of the web.

  • Patent number: 4496049
Abstract: There is disclosed a hand-held labeler which uses labels releasably adhered to a carrier web. The labeler has a body with a pair of identical body sections. The body mounts first, second and third feed rolls. The first and third feed rolls project beyond the body and cooperate respectively with the second feed roll. The body has a delaminator and a guideway for the carrier web. The carrier web can be threaded through the guideway and about the delaminator in either direction. In either event, the first, second and third feed rolls cooperate with the carrier web to advance it and effect label delamination. Depending on the direction of threading, either the first or the third feed roll is used to advance the carrier web by rolling that feed roll along the surface to be labeled. A label roll is held captive in a holder having two identical body sections. In an alternative embodiment, a label strip winding feature enables a strip of labels to be wound into a roll for subsequent use in the labeler.
