  • Patent number: 4112344
Abstract: There is disclosed a method of feeding record webs or sheets and apparatus for carrying out the method. The record feeding apparatus is shown in conjunction with a printing apparatus having a print head assembly, platen structure, a mechanism for severing a printed record from the remainder of the record and an inking mechanism. The record feeding apparatus includes an edge guide, a rotatable feed wheel having a planar frictional surface which engages one face of the web to exert a resultant drive force on the record when driven, the resultant force being comprised of a force vector of large magnitude extending in the longitudinal direction for feeding the record longitudinally and a force vector of small magnitude extending in the lateral direction for causing the record to be driven laterally to cause its side edge to be in guided contact with the edge guide.

  • Patent number: 4111736
Abstract: Disclosed are three embodiments of a hand-held apparatus for printing and applying pressure sensitive labels. All the embodiments are disclosed as having a housing, a rigid, metal, frame plate mounted by the housing, a platen and a cooperating print head, a delaminator for delaminating printed labels from the web of supporting material on which the labels are carried, an applicator for applying the printed labels, a feed wheel having teeth for engaging and advancing the web, a manually operable actuator drivingly connected to the feed wheel and the print head, a brake, and an ink roll for inking the print head. The apparatus also includes a feed wheel assembly having a feed wheel driven by a pawl and ratchet mechanism. The pawl and ratchet mechanism is adjustably connected to the feed wheel and a rolling contact type one-way clutch prevents loss of tension in the web between the brake and the feed wheel.

  • Patent number: 4094438
Abstract: There is disclosed a composite web of labels in a supply roll, method of making a label roll and method of dispensing labels. The composite web has a web of supporting material and labels releasably adhered to the supporting material web. There are groups of slits in the supporting material web and in the labels at longitudinally spaced apart locations. The slits are shown to be in a generally Y-shaped configuration. Each group has a generally longitudinally extending slit and two slits disposed at an angle with respect to the transverse direction across the web. The two slits extend at an angle to the transverse direction from a generally V-shaped flap or flap portion. The slits were shown to be spaced apart by a land or frangible portion. The labels are dispensed from the roll by drawing the web about a delaminator in a direction that the flap portions trail across the delaminator.

  • Patent number: 4079878
Abstract: There is disclosed a pinning machine having an improved plunger, an improved guide track and an improved knife assembly. The plunger has relatively movable sections threadably connected together to enable the length of the plunger to be changed so that tags can be pinned to different thicknesses of merchandise by changing the plunger length. The guide track includes a one-piece leaf spring which acts against one edge of a web tags to urge the other side of the web against an edge guide. The spring is resiliently held in captivity in a recess without being secured in the recess as by fasteners. The knife assembly includes a pair of fixed knives separated by a gap and a movable knife guided by guide means in the gap. The movable knife is floatingly or loosely mounted so that the guide means is the sole means for guiding the movable knife relative to the fixed knives.

  • Patent number: 4070220
Abstract: There is disclosed a web of record assemblies and a method of using same. The web is a composite web constructed by using both a longitudinally extending web of supporting material and a web of label material releasably adhered to the supporting material by means of pressure sensitive adhesive. The composite web is formed into a plurality of record assemblies by means of a plurality of transversely spaced-apart lines of partial severing in the supporting material and by either butt cutting or die cutting the label material. The label material of each record assembly is, according to one embodiment, partially severed along a longitudinal line and the supporting material is completely severed along the same longitudinal line. The label material on one side of the longitudinal line is divided into record sections containing one or more labels.

  • Patent number: 4052938
Abstract: There is disclosed printing apparatus having a pivotally mounted print head which cooperates with a platen, a cam shaft to which a cam is secured for actuating the print head and to which another cam is secured for driving an operating lever. The cam means is part of a lost-motion connection which couples the slide to the inker. As the operating lever is cammed in one direction to move the feed finger forward, the inker is moved into and out of inking cooperation with the print head assembly. Both an ink cartridge and an ink pad assembly are mounted on yieldable supports to promote uniform pressure contact and hence uniform inking. The print head is provided with toothed drive wheels and one or more intervening blank elements or spacers each having tooth surfaces defining a gap or space which enables an indexing gear to be shifted smoothly relative to the toothed drive wheels.
