  • Patent number: 4484069
Abstract: Apparatus for sensing the distance from a reference point to a remote object comprises a light source and optics to project light from the light source onto the remote object. One component of the optics is a movable mirror which is used to position the projected light on a remote object. A sensor is provided to detect the position of the projected light on the remote object. In response to position information from the sensor, control circuitry produces a drive signal which controls a galvanometer. The galvanometer shaft is attached to rotate the mirror. When the mirror has been positioned such that the projected light impinges on the remote object at a predetermined location, the value of the drive signal can be used to compute the distance to the remote object by triangulation.

  • Patent number: 4454991
Abstract: An apparatus and method for dynamically monitoring the gap between the refining surfaces of first and second relatively rotating metallic refining members. At least one of the refining members is mounted to a first rotatable shaft which is supported in a housing by lubricated bearing means. When the refining members are in rotating relation, an electrical impedance exists across the gap. The value of the impedance is dependent on the size of the gap. An alternating electrical current is passed through the gap and the voltage across the gap is monitored to provide an indication of the size of the gap. The voltage across the gap can also be used as one input to a circuit which controls the size of the gap by driving an electro/hydraulic system.

  • Patent number: 4344727
Abstract: A conveyor accumulates collapsed, flexible flat tubes into roughly aligned stacks which are transferred to a collator comprising an inclined tray-like receptacle mounted for multidirectional movement. The receptacle is simultaneously rotated and pivoted from a loading station to a discharge station while being rapidly reciprocated to vibrate the roughly stacked tubes. The combined effects of gravity and vibration urge the tubes to shift relative to each other into engagement with adjacent sidewalls of the tray to align the stack. A pallet mounted for multidirectional movement at the discharge station is automatically indexed to allow the aligned stacks to be deposited at preselected locations on the pallet.

  • Patent number: 4324820
Abstract: A moving substrate material such as a web of paper, paperboard, film, or other substance is covered with a coating by propelling a coating material onto a deflector bar positioned near the substrate material. The deflector bar is configured to deflect the coating material toward the moving web in a continuous, free standing, smooth jet curtain of coating material. The coating on the web is free of skips, scratches, and other imperfections. In one embodiment, propulsion of the coating material toward the bar is accomplished by rotating a drum, or applicator roll, through the coating material. The surface of the drum or roll carries the material to the deflector bar at a speed and in a sufficient quantity to cause the material to be deflected by the bar in a continuous free standing curtain toward the paper web.

  • Patent number: 4298574
Abstract: A differential thermocouple hydrogen gas detector (10) is provided by coating one thermocouple junction (34) of a differential thermocouple pair (34, 36) with a Palladium-Silver alloy catalyst (46) and the other thermocouple junction (36) with a non-catalyst (52). Heated hydrogen gas reacts with the catalyst (46) to liberate heat to the catalyst coated thermocouple junction (34) in proportion to the concentration of hydrogen gas and proportionally raise the temperature of the catalyst coated junction (34) above that of the non-catalyst coated junction (36). The output signal (44) from the differential thermocouple device (34, 36) thus provides an output signal indicative of the concentration of hydrogen gas.

  • Patent number: 4295493
Abstract: A drag ball valve (10) that can variable regulate the pressure drop to which the fluid passing therethrough is subjected while maintaining the fluid velocity nearly constant is disclosed. To accomplish this, a series of fixed disks (34) having apertures (36) therein and rotatable disks (42) having apertures (44) with flange-like projections (46) therein are aligned so that either an unobstructed straight fluid passage through the apertures in both types of disks is created or the fluid is diverted by the flange-like projections (46) causing pressure reductions due to a variable number of flow direction turns. By varying the number of fixed disks (34) and rotatable disks (42) used, and by varying the number of rotatable disks (42) that are so aligned, any number of flow direction turns and associated pressure drops from zero pressure drops to the total number of rotatable disks (42) used can be achieved.
