Patent number: 4565748Abstract: The invention consists of an electromagnetic-field pump. Electrolyte which is an electromagnetic conductor can be stirred and pumped by forcing a field through the electrolyte to magnetically charge the electrolyte and making use of magnetic force exerted on the charged electrolyte by a magnetic field to move the electrolyte. There are no moving parts in the device, only the changing magnetic fields. The magnetic pump assembly is submerged in an electrolyte and consists of an open ended tubular nonmagnetic chamber through which the electrolyte is forced to move in response to changing magnetic fields from external coils which are positioned about the exterior of the tubular chamber and operated to sequentially change in phase.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1985Date of Patent: January 21, 1986Inventor: Ernest A. Patent number: 4562706Abstract: A torsion spring longitudinally rotates a locking bolt when the bolt actung linkage is severed. A woodruff key or the like is upstanding from a surface of the bolt. When the linkage is undamaged, the key slides with the bolt through a slot on the lock frame. When the bolt is rotated by the spring, it is locked in the rotated position by a locking pawl. In the rotated position, the key is out of registry with the slot and the bolt cannot be withdrawn from its extended, locking position. A second embodiment replaces the key with a recess in the bolt into which a locking pawl engages to prevent movement of the locking bolt.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1984Date of Patent: January 7, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Teddy L. Patent number: 4543070Abstract: An improved system for operating a lifting cable over the side of a ship at ea in which a spar buoy having an adjustable lifting capacity is coupled to the ship by a rigid linkage which is free to pivot on an axis attached to the ship deck, and operates to decouple the motion of the ship from the lifting cable. The spar buoy is attached to a gimbal sheave assembly having a disengageable connector and tension line for drawing the connector into engagement with a mating socket at the outward end of a linkage boom. A narrow upper section of the spar buoy is provided with a plurality of vertical tubes and valves which by flooding or evacuating operate to vary the effective water plane area of the buoy for continual fine tuning and optimally adjusting of its natural heave mode characteristic frequency.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1984Date of Patent: September 24, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Ralph A. Patent number: 4542334Abstract: Inductive coupling of a high-frequency signal into a cable to be detected d tracked in a seawater medium for sensing the relative position of the cable with respect to capacitor plates. The capacitor plates are positioned so that in conjunction with the cable a differential capacitor is formed. Relative movement of the capacitor plates with respect to the position of the cable is used to unbalance a Wheatstone Bridge circuit. The output signal from the bridge circuit is proportional to their displacement and is used to provide a guidance signal to realign the capacitor plates and the cable.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1983Date of Patent: September 17, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Floyd E. Patent number: 4527062Abstract: A portable infrared spectrophotometer for nondestructive testing of coatings, plastics, rubber and other organic construction materials. A single source of infrared light is formed into two beams. One beam is directed to the surface of a sample where it is reflected off the surface of the sample at least four times. The other beam follows a similar path but bounces off a neutral surface. The two beams are combined and focused onto a detector. The output of the detector is proportional to the energy absorbed by the surface of the test sample. A pen recorder is used to provide a graphic display of the spectrum generated.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1983Date of Patent: July 2, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventor: Thomas Novinson

Patent number: 4461977Abstract: The single zone lighting controller controls the lights in a zone or area integrating external control signals for daylighting and occupancy with a local override function. The daylighting signal is from a master photoelectric control, and occupancy signal is from a time-clock or electronic occupancy sensor; the local override, activated by an occupant provides a fixed override period before the single zone lighting controlled again responds to the external control signals. Shortly before the override period is over, the single zone lighting controller warns the occupant, e.g., by blinking the lights that the override is about to end.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1982Date of Patent: July 24, 1984Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: William Pierpoint, Dan M.
