  • Patent number: 4637202
Abstract: A bag support for a riding lawn mower grass collector includes a rectangular framework (2) attached to a mower (10) with grass directing hood (4). A grass bag (6) has a resilient frame (8) extending substantially around bag opening (40). A much larger leaf bag (80) has a resilient frame (82) extending substantially around bag opening (40'). Frames (8, 82) include three continuous coplanar sides and a fourth side with a central open space (44, 86) bounded by a pair of handles (12, 12') extending perpendicularly outward from frame (8, 82). The sections of the fourth side adjacent open space (44, 82) are at an acute angle to the plane of the three coplanar sides. Frames (8, 82) are configured to match separate portions of framework (2). Framework (2) includes transverse brackets (14) and (16) at locations to correspond with alternate sizes of bag (6) or (80). Handle retaining brackets (18) are attached to rear of framework (2) to receive handles (12, 12').

  • Patent number: 4571831
Abstract: A cutting head (20) for a filament trimmer utilizing a fixed length of filament is shaped like an inverted bowl with a flange (2). A filament retainer cup (60) is attached to the concavity of head (20) and has two V-shaped slits (64) diametrically opposed. Apertures (6) in the sides of head (20) are aligned with slits (64). Bosses (36) extend outwardly from sides of bowl about half the width of flange (2) and terminate in planar faces (6). Faces (6) are inclined inwardly and upwardly and contain slots (26). Eyelets (24) are press fit into slots (26). Filament (4) is installed through eyelets and is pressed into slits (64) so free ends (5) are the same length on both sides of the head. Free ends (5) define a cutting plane when head (20) is rotating. Slits (64) impose a slight crimp in filament (4) and prevent filament (4) from moving axially when the device is in operation.

  • Patent number: 4558558
Abstract: A self-propelled lawn mower (2) has an engine (4), transmission (8), two drive wheels (10) and a rearwardly and upwardly extending handle (18). A pivotable and rotatable control bar (20) is mounted on handle (18). The pivotable and rotatable bar (20) provides individual or simultaneous engagement of drive wheels for ground traction, gradual or zero radius turns, and braking. Thus a single control bar (20) provides a multitude of functions.

  • Patent number: 4452185
Abstract: An engine housing assembly (1) has a cover (2) and a body (4). Longitudinal baffles (10, 12 and 17) on cover (2) cooperate with baffles (13, 14, 60 and 61) on body (4) to seal against engine (8), to provide a first chamber (16) adjacent the intake side of the engine, and a second chamber (50) adjacent the exhaust side of the engine. An inlet opening (22) and exhaust opening (24) in body (4) facilitate movement of the air through the housing by fan (45) to restrict recirculation of engine heat in the housing, thus minimizing vapor lock. An opening (33) between baffles (17 and 16) allows a flow of heated air from the exhaust side of the engine over carburetor (44) to minimize carburetor icing.

  • Patent number: 4374465
Abstract: A rotary lawn mower (2) has a rigid cutting blade (6) rotatable in a housing (4). A filament holder (12) is releasably attached to blade (6) through aperture (16) by mounting means consisting of tab (22), neck (24), and collar (26). Filament holder (12) releasably contains a filament (14) which extends beyond housing (4) and provides a trimming function outside housing (4).
