  • Patent number: 6139313
Abstract: There is described a furnace of the kind in which a toroidal fluid flow heating zone may be established. The furnace includes a chamber (7a) in which there is provided an inner block and a ring of angled blades (21) between the inner block and an inner wall of the chamber (7a). Means (4a) is provided for delivering fluid into the chamber in such a way that the fluid passes through gaps between the blades and establishes a toroidal fluid flow heating zone in the chamber above the ring of angled blades. Means (23) is also provided for injecting feed particulate material into the chamber in a region where the toroidal fluid flow heating zone is to be established. In one arrangement, means (49) is additionally provided for injecting fuel into the chamber in a region above the ring of angled blades so that the region in the chamber at which the heating zone is established is elevated above the ring of angled blades. In another arrangement, means (33) is provided for cooling the inner block.

  • Patent number: 6116699
Abstract: An attachment for a power machine includes a first mounting plate and a housing mounted to the mounting plate. The housing has a front end and a rear end and generally oppositely disposed first and second sides. The first side of the housing is removable. A rotor is rotatably mounted to the second side of the housing and has a surface and first and second longitudinal ends. A portion of the surface and the first longitudinal end are exposed by removal of the first side of the housing. A motor is coupled to the rotor to rotatably drive the rotor.

  • Patent number: 6112168
Abstract: The present invention is directed to recognizing a discourse structure of a body of text. In a preferred embodiment, a discourse structure recognition facility utilizes syntactic information associated with the body of text to generate a discourse structure tree that characterizes the discourse structure of the body of text. The facility first identifies in the body of text a number of clauses. The facility then determines, for each distinct pair of clauses, which of a number of possible discourse relations should be hypothesized between the pair of clauses, based on the syntactic structure and semantic of the body of text relative to the pair of clauses. The facility then applies the hypothesized relations to the clauses in order to produce a discourse structure tree characterizing the discourse structure of the body of text. In certain embodiments, the facility further generates from the produced discourse structure tree a synopsis of the body of text reflecting the primary goals pursued by its author.

  • Patent number: 6110100
Abstract: An apparatus and method for relieving stress on a heart muscle tissue in a wall of a heart having a chamber. A plurality of biocompatible and implantable elongate strips are configured to be connected to the heart wall and disposed about the chamber such that the elongate strips are arranged in spaced relation to one another. The elongate strips are bendable and are sufficiently resistant to elongation such that natural stretching of the heart wall does not cause elongation of the plurality of strips.

  • Patent number: 6108620
Abstract: A method and system that uses a chunking technique to guide the parsing. A chunk is a portion of the input for which the system has determined that a sufficient number of syntax rules have been applied such that further application of syntax rules to that chunk is unlikely to produce a more accurate sub-parse for that chunk. When using the chunking technique, the system selects a syntax rule to apply to the current partial parse (sub-trees) of the input sentence. The selected syntax rule has a high probability relative to other syntax rules that can be applied to the one or more potential sub-trees of the input sentence. The system then applies the selected syntax rule to the potential sub-trees of the input sentence to form a new potential sub-trees of the input sentence. When the system determines that syntax rules with low probabilities have recently been applied, the system disables application of syntax rules to a portion of parse of the input sentence (i.e.

  • Patent number: 6101058
Abstract: A method of implementing a model based servo controller in a digital signal processor in a disc drive includes obtaining matrices for a discrete-time state-space realization of the servo controller. Controller states of the controller are scaled to reduce a worst case bound on the controller states. The controller states are transformed to a desired format which reduces a number of required mathematical operations. Further, the matrices are converted to fixed point format.

  • Patent number: 6098033
Abstract: The present invention provides a facility for determining similarity between two input words utilizing the frequencies with which path patterns occurring between the words occur between words known to be synonyms. A preferred embodiment of the facility utilizes a training phase and a similarity determination phase. In the training phase, the facility first identifies, for a number of pairs of synonyms, the most salient semantic relation paths between each pair of synonyms. The facility then extracts from these semantic relation paths their path patterns, which each comprise a series of directional relation types. The number of times that each path pattern occurs between pairs of synonyms, called the frequency of the path pattern, is counted. In the training phase, the facility identifies the most salient semantic relation paths between the input words, and extracts their path patterns.

  • Patent number: 6081775
Abstract: The present invention is directed to characterizing the sense of an occurrence of a polysemous word in a representation of a dictionary. In a preferred embodiment, the representation of the dictionary is made up of a plurality of text segments containing word occurrences having a word sense characterization and word occurrences not having a word sense characterization. The embodiment first selects a plurality of the dictionary text segments that each contain a first word. The embodiment then identifies from among the selected text segments a first and a second occurrence of a second word. The identified second occurrence of the second word has a word sense characterization. The embodiment then attributes to the first occurrence of the second word sense characterization of the second occurrence of the second word.

  • Patent number: 6076056
Abstract: Speech recognition is performed by receiving isolated speech training data indicative of a plurality of discretely spoken training words, and receiving continuous speech training data indicative of a plurality of continuously spoken training words. A plurality of speech unit models is trained based on the isolated speech training data and the continuous speech training data. Speech is recognized based on the speech unit models trained.

  • Patent number: 6052735
Abstract: A desktop computer and a mobile device both contain personal information management systems, such as electronic mail applications. Objects maintained by the electronic mail applications are synchronized between the desktop computer and the mobile device such that attachments to electronic mail messages are receivable by the mobile device. The present invention also allows the user of the mobile device to dynamically retrieve individual electronic mail message attachments on a per message basis. Further, filtering techniques can be implemented such that, during synchronization, only predetermined attachments are automatically provided to the electronic mail message object store on the mobile device.
