Abstract: A turbine assembly is described comprising a casing, a rotor assembly disposed radially inwardly of the casing and adapted to discharge high velocity jets of liquid coolant toward the casing and a rotatable annular ring disposed intermediate the casing and rotor assembly. The ring includes a trough assembly so composed and arranged that liquid coolant impinging thereon is contained therein as a film and the ring rotates in response to such impingement. The ring speed is significantly less than the rotor speed such that erosion of the casing by the coolant is substantially reduced.
Abstract: Dihydrooxadiazinones are provided which can be used as blowing agents in various thermoplastic polymeric materials to produce high performance thermoplastic foams. A ketone having at least one .alpha.-hydrogen atom is halogenated and hydroxylated to produce an .alpha.-hydroxyketone. Condensation of the .alpha.-hydroxyketone with an organocarbazate produces the corresponding carboorganooxyhydrazone which is cyclized to a dihydrooxadiazinone.
Abstract: Disclosed is a solution including an aromatic bis (ether dicarboxylic acid) component, an organic diamine component and a solvent system including a water-soluble organic solvent component, which may be a dipolar aprotic solvent or a monoalkyl ether of ethylene glycol or of diethylene glycol, and optionally water. The solution may be coated on a substrate and polymerized to form high quality polyetherimide coatings.
Abstract: A control for use upon a solid panel, devoid of control shaft apertures, allows data entry by rotational positioning of an electrode to vary the capacitance to at least one of a multiplicity of electrodes formed upon an interior surface of the panel. A magnetizable disk is attached to the exterior of the panel, with the control knob having a magnetized member attracted to the disk for maintaining the control knob in proper position while allowing control knob rotational adjustments. A light-emitting display is positioned behind the panel to indicate the index of the control knob by means of a variable-length, circular bar of light.
Abstract: A blend comprising a polyalkylene terephthalate resin, an organopolysiloxane-polycarbonate block copolymer and a calcium carbonate filler having improved warp and impact properties. The polymer blends can be molded or formed into films, sheets, fibers, laminates, or other improved molded articles of manufacture including reinforced articles by conventional techniques.
Abstract: Deep diodes which extend in straight lines through a silicon wafer are produced by migrating aluminum droplets through the wafer while maintaining a finite temperature gradient through the wafer in the direction of straight line droplet travel, and at the same time maintaining a zero temperature gradient through the wafer in a direction normal to the droplet travel course. Unidirectional heat flow apparatus implementing this method is also disclosed.
Abstract: A metal oxide varistor structure having a reduced voltage overshoot is disclosed. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the varistor disk, for example, is provided with a relatively small region of reduced thickness, the amount of said thickness reduction being dependent upon the original thickness of the varistor substrate. The area of region of reduced thickness is selected to control conduction duration in the region of reduced thickness.
Abstract: A process of forming linear, branched and/or cross-linked acyl-coupled polymers of quinone-coupled polyphenylene oxides is described which comprises contacting di- and/or tri-functional acyl halides with quinone-coupled polyphenylene oxides having an average hydroxyl group per molecule value greater than zero including 2.0 or less.
Abstract: A process of forming heterocyclic-coupled linear, branched and/or cross-linked polymers of polyphenylene oxides is described which comprises contacting heterocyclic halides with (a) polyphenylene oxides having an average hydroxyl group per molecule value greater than zero including 1.0 or less, or (b) quinone-coupled polyphenylene oxides having an average hydroxyl group per molecule value greater than zero including 2.0 or less, including mixtures of (a) and (b).
Abstract: A cobalt-rare earth alloy sintered product is substantially magnetized by heating or cooling it to a temperature at which its intrinsic coercive force H.sub.ci is significantly lower than at room temperature, applying a relatively small magnetizing field to it at such temperature and cooling or warming it in the magnetizing field to room temperature.
Abstract: Phosphorus containing linear, branched and/or crosslinked block polymers of polyphenylene oxides are described which comprise di- and/or tri-functional phosphoryl radicals coupled with mono- and/or polyphenoxy radicals, said polyphenoxy radicals being derived from (a) polyphenylene oxides having an average hydroxyl group per molecule value greater than zero including 1.0 or less, or (b) polyphenylene oxide-quinone coupled polymers having an average hydroxyl group per molecule value greater than zero including 2.0 or less, and mixtures thereof. The resulting polyphenylene oxides can be used to prepare flame-retardant polyphenylene oxide articles of manufacture.
Abstract: Isomerization of an ortho, para-isomer of a dihydroxydiphenyl chloroethylene compound to the corresponding para, para-isomer can be effected by treatment of the former with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid in the presence of phenol.
Abstract: Cores made of alumina-based ceramics, such as .beta.-alumina materials, are substantially non-reactive with directionally solidified eutectic and superalloy materials, do not cause hot cracking of the same, and are easily leachable from the cast metal.

Abstract: A poly(hydroxy) telechelic styrene polymer polymerization process comprising contacting an olefin, a free radical polymerization initiator, and a poly(hydroxyorgano) polysulfide is described. The poly(hydroxy) terminated styrene polymers can be end-capped and/or coupled with other polymeric materials. The styrene polymers can be molded, calendered, or extruded as films, sheets, fibers, laminates or other useful articles of manufacture.
Abstract: Disclosed is an ultrathin permselective polyetherimide membrane having an average thickness of less than about 10 microns and formed of a polymeric composition comprising a polyetherimide prepared by reacting metaphenylenediamine and certain aromatic bis(ether anhydride)s. A gas separation process employing the membrane is also disclosed.
Abstract: A process is disclosed which provides for an increase in the oxidative and/or thermal stability of quinone coupled polyphenylene oxides which comprises contacting quinone-coupled polyphenylene oxides with a capping agent in the presence of a water soluble base, and a catalytic phase transfer agent. The resulting new polymers have improved color and in combination with styrene resins provide thermoplastic compositions having improved chemical and physical properties.
Abstract: Apparatus for performing matrix mutiplication of a plurality (n) of input signals by a matrix of fixed coefficients (.alpha..sub.nm) to provide a plurality (m) of output signals, all of which are simultaneously available, is described.
Abstract: The compound 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethylene can be prepared by the reaction of 1,1-dichloro-2,2-diphenoxy ethylene and phenol in the presence of triflic acid. The formed dihydroxydiphenyl chloroethylene can be treated with a phosgenating agent to form polycarbonate resins which can be used in applications where flame retardancy is desired.
Abstract: Liquid amorphous metal alloy is manufactured into shaped laminations ready for assembly in an inductive component in one process. The rotating chill surface to which the melt is delivered has high thermal conductivity metal in a pattern corresponding to the shaped lamination and is surrounded by thermally insulating material. Melt coming in contact with the high thermal conductivity metal becomes amorphous and that contacting the thermally insulating areas cools more slowly and becomes crystalline. The brittle crystalline scrap is broken away from the strip of laminations and is collected and recycled to the melt.
