  • Patent number: 5657874
Abstract: A food package comprising a rigid plastic base tray having at least three compartments, the tray being covered by a flexible film which is airtightly sealed to flanges of the tray to airtightly or hermetically seal the respective compartments. A label structure integrally associated with the flexible film has opaque areas for label information and transparent areas for viewing the product. The label structure may be formed by separate pressure sensitive labels, by printing on the flexible film itself or by a shrink wrapped band with printing thereon. A structure associated with the bottom of the tray may provide rigidity, protect the bottom of the tray, provide an additional area for commercial information and/or provide a stand-up feature. The materials of the package may be selected to maximize recyclability.

  • Patent number: 5345069
Abstract: A gas-flushed microwavable easy-to-open food package is provided which is resistant to impact under temperatures at or below freezing and which is comprised of a flexible lidding film having oxygen-barrier properties hermetically and peelably sealed to a food compartment formed from a polypropylene copolymer material. The lidding film is preferably comprised of oriented polyester, and the food product compartment further comprises a peelable oxygen, barrier film, preferably formed of ethylene vinyl acetate, PVDC and a peelable polyethylene layer. The package is designed to contain a perishable food product, such as a wiener in a bun or other proteinaceous-farinaceous food combinations, and is preferably entirely or partially transparent so as to allow the consumer to readily observe the condition of the food product before purchase.

  • Patent number: 5137062
Abstract: An auto-tamping funnel system for tamping a product in a container includes a downwardly converging funnel having a bottom outlet disposed adjacent an open top of the tray and a side recess or cutout near the bottom outlet. A door is sized to fit closely in the bottom outlet and in the side recess and a mounting mechanism mounts the door for movement such as rotation between a tamping position where the bottom outlet is closed by the door and a receiving position where the side recess is substantially closed by the door and the bottom outlet is unobstructed. A moving mechanism moves the door between the tamping and the receiving positions. Preferably, the mounting mechanism includes a pivot axis for the door which is adjacent the bottom outlet and the bottom outlet and the recess of the funnel are rectangularly shaped. A pressure distributing mechanism also provides a maximum tamping pressure against the product, when the door is in the tamping position, at a location which is spaced from the pivot axis.

  • Patent number: 5123527
Abstract: A food package having a rigid base tray formed of resilient material and having a plurality of recessed compartments, at least some of said recessed compartments containing food products and being air-tightly sealed with a flexible film. The rigid base tray is enclosed within a sleeve which includes front and back panels connected together by upper side and lower side panels. The sleeve may include a feature permitting the package to be displayed upright. The sleeve would include a structure for easily breaking the sleeve so that the consumer can easily reach the contents of the rigid base tray.

  • Patent number: 5119940
Abstract: A package of the type having a tray with recessed compartments for receiving food products or the like, the tray being covered by a thin flexible and preferably transparent film which seals the products in their respective compartments. The outer enclosure is formed by a stiff collar which completely encircles the tray with the sides of the collar turned downwardly and inwardly to provide frictional and resilient engagement of the collar with the sides of the tray. The collar also includes a stiff support flap which enables it to stand on end.

  • Patent number: 5067304
Abstract: A continuous and automatic system and method for packing a container with a utensil applied thereto in a carton forms a finished package. Initially, the containers travel along an infeed conveyor and are transferred by a transferring device to flighted belt. The transferring device includes a first sensor for sensing the presence of a backlog of the containers at the transferring device and for enabling the transferring device when the backlog is sensed. After being placed on the flighted belt, the containers have a respective wrapped utensil applied thereto. The applying device includes a second sensor which senses a presence of each successive container. A feedback device is also used for matching a selected line speed of the containers on the flighted belt with a transferring speed of the transferring device. Finally, each container with the utensil applied thereto is placed in a carton by a suitable cartoning device.
