  • Patent number: 5296337
Abstract: There are described a method for retouching photographic images, compositions adapted for such retouching, and photographic elements containing dye-forming couplers that yield dye images that particularly lend themselves to retouching by this method. The method comprises contacting a photographic element containing a dye image with a defined retouching composition to solubilize and remove selected areas or amounts of dye. The composition comprises an aqueous basic solution of a dinucleophile and a water-soluble organic co-solvent. The preferred photographic element for application of this retouching method comprises a dye image formed from a pyrazoloazole magenta dye forming coupler having a cleavable ballast group joined to the remainder of the molecule by one or two electrophilic cleavage groups. The retouching composition cleaves the ballast from the dye and solubilizes the dye, allowing it to be washed from the element.

  • Patent number: 5246644
Abstract: The critical dimensions of product samples made during a standard certification procedure for an injection molding process are measured and a loss factor value is computed for each such dimension. Using statistical techniques, the largest loss factor value is partitioned into percentages of loss contributed by a predetermined set of loss elements. The loss element contributing the largest percentage is corrected so as to improve the quality of the process and the product. The method provides a way of determining what kinds of process corrections will most effectively improve product and process quality.

  • Patent number: 5206057
Abstract: In a curtain coating apparatus for the coating of photographic film and paper webs and the like, the line of impingement of the curtain on the moving web is controlled by providing a pressure controlled zone on one side of the flowing curtain. Small changes in the static air pressure in the zone cause the position of the curtain to move without disturbing the quality of the curtain. Wetted side walls of the pressure controlled zone can serve as edge guides for the curtain.

  • Patent number: 5190515
Abstract: An apparatus for degassing a continuously flowing liquid stream comprising an air-tight housing, in which is mounted for rotation a centrifuge bowl of circular cross-section and having an inner surface for spreading centrifugally impelled liquid to be degassed and an annular peripheral trough for retaining centrifugally impelled degassed liquid. The liquid stream is fed into the bowl and the degassed liquid is withdrawn through a tube extending from an exit line outside the housing to an open end of elongate cross-section which is positioned within the trough of the bowl and is immersible in the degassed liquid. The apparatus further provides for measuring the pressure of the exiting degassed liquid, the pressure measurement being used to regulate the flow of liquid into the bowl so as to maintain a substantially constant level of liquid therein.
