  • Patent number: 5436030
Abstract: A fountain applicator for applying coating liquid onto a web of paper carried past the applicator, has a coating liquid flow path that includes a curved surface along which a sheet of the coating liquid is flowed to subject the sheet to centrifugal force to cause air entrained in the coating liquid to move away from one side of the sheet that is toward the curved surface, so that the one side is relatively free of entrained air. After being flowed along the curved surface, the sheet of coating liquid is directed toward the web in a free standing jet curtain of coating liquid, to contact the web surface primarily with the one relatively air-free side of the coating liquid sheet to decrease the occurrence of skip coating on the web surface, especially when the web is traveling past the applicator at high speeds. The coating is applied in excess onto the web surface and is metered and leveled to a desired coat weight by a downstream doctor.

  • Patent number: 5415307
Abstract: To ensure the original state of the contents of a receptacle, the stopper comprises inwardly oriented blocking attachments on a surrounding tear-off sealing ring, with the blocking attachments gripping below an outwardly oriented annular projection of the receptacle. The blocking attachments are formed by lateral slides which cooperate with an inner contour sleeve. The sealing ring is respectively connected by a single tear-off web centrally between two adjacent blocking attachments to the upper circumferential wall. As a result, the finished stopper can be slid from the contour sleeve after cooling to 80.degree., the blocking attachments being smoothly guided on the guide surfaces of the contour sleeve. The sealing ring bulges elastically between two adjacent tear-off webs and subsequently assumes its original circular shape again.

  • Patent number: 5415531
Abstract: A pump that is in essence leak-proof and prevents the escape to ambient atmosphere of environmentally hazardous fluent materials is comprised of an outlet block defining a pump chamber having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, a piston having one end reciprocable within the pump chamber and sealed to the outlet block, a piston rod connected to the other end of the piston for reciprocating the piston, a dynamic block secured to the outlet block and defining a sealed dynamic chamber within which the other end of the piston reciprocates, and an outlet from the dynamic chamber in continuous closed-circuit communication with a recirculating system for preventing escape into the environment of any fluent material that may leak past the piston seal. The pump also includes an articulated seal for sealing the piston rod to the dynamic chamber to maintain the sealed integrity of the chamber while at the same time accommodating reciprocation of the piston rod.

  • Patent number: 5363699
Abstract: Highly reliable measurements of the fluid and/or fluid flow in a conduit are obtained by insertion within the conduit, upstream of a fluid measuring or sampling device, of a fluid flow straigntening and displacement apparatus which serves to stabilize, homogenize and condition the fluid flow and form at the device a uniform, axially centered, axially symmetrical, well defined and accurately measurable flow profile of large means flow diameter. The flow straightening and fluid displacement apparatus comprises, in sequence in the direction of fluid flow, a first swirl mitigating and flow straightening device, a fluid displacement member comprised of two oppositely facing frustums jointed at their larger ends and mounted coaxially within the conduit, and a second flow straightening device. Advantageous combinations of the flow straightening and fluid displacement apparatus with known measuring and sampling devices are provided.
