  • Patent number: 5146945
Abstract: A removably securable guide ring (33) for a valve plug (30) in a control valve. The removably securable guide ring (33) also serves as a retainer for a pressure seal ring. The guide ring (33) includes the surface (40) which, upon the guide ring (33) being secured with a valve plug (30), forms a seal ring groove with a stepped portion (34) of the valve plug (30). A seal ring may be installed by removing the guide ring (33) from the valve plug (30), placing the seal ring within the stepped portion (34) of the valve plug (30), and by securing the guide ring (33) with the valve plug (30). As a result, the seal ring is disposed within a seal ring groove formed by a stepped indentation (34) of the valve plug (30) and a surface (40) of the guide ring (33). The guide ring (33) also includes a surface (38) which faces and may abut the inside surface of a valve bonnet (12) during operation.

  • Patent number: 5133641
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for increasing the bending flexibility of the horizontal joint flange of a low pressure steam turbine. The radial width of the horizontal joint flange in the support area where the turbine inner cylinder rests on the outer cylinder has been significantly reduced. In order to accommodate a reduction in the radial width of the flange in this area, the present invention provides a novel arrangement of the functional features of the cylinder support area. In a preferred embodiment the horizontal joint flange is capable of being narrowed in the radial direction due to the strategic rearrangement of the functional components in the support area. The present invention also provides retrofit steps for modifying existing turbines in order to provide the features and benefits of the improved apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5109675
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and corresponding apparatus for detecting open and short circuit faults in a valve position sensor. According to one aspect of the invention, a fuel or steam valve (2) in a turbine system is automatically opened and closed by a positioner/sensor combination (1, 36, 32). In the event a fault occurs in the position sensing circuitry, a fault signal is immediately produced which allows appropriate action to be taken, e.g., closing the valve, before the turbine is damaged.

  • Patent number: 5079922
Abstract: A steam turbine system has a plurality of moisture-separator-reheaters (MSR) each connected via a respective drain line to a corresponding drain receiver. Each drain receiver includes a further drain line coupled through a flow control valve to a common line. The common line empties into a drain cooler connected at the highest pressure end of a series of feedwater reheaters. The drain cooler dumps through another flow control valve to one of the feedwater heaters. Each of the drain receivers includes a pressure sensor and liquid level sensor. A control processor monitors the pressure sensors and selects the drain receiver subjected to the lowest pressure. The processor then fully opens the valve associated with the selected drain receiver and thereafter regulates the liquid level in the others of the drain receivers by adjustment of their respective flow control valves in response to their respective level sensors.

  • Patent number: 5065635
Abstract: An apparatus for inspecting an item having grooves machined therein includes a main housing having longitudinal grooves formed in opposite sides thereof. The main housing defines an underside for contacting the item to be inspected. A carriage has opposite sides adapted for slidably engaging the longitudinal grooves in the main housing. A sensor is provided for inspecting the item. A mechanism is provided for connecting the sensor to the carriage such that the sensor extends beyond the underside of the main housing. The mechanism is adjustable so that the degree of extension of the sensor beyond the underside of the main housing may be controlled. A reference member is adjustably connected to, and extends from, the underside of the main housing for enabling the main housing to smoothly follow each groove.

  • Patent number: 5055783
Abstract: A field strength indicator for a magnetic particle inspection process is used to determine field strength and direction sufficient to identify real flaws in a test piece. The field strength indicator is a substantially flat shim having at least one series of artificial flaws formed therein by electric discharge machining. The artificial flaws have a geometry which render them compatible with real flaws and thus enable the magnetic field strength and direction to be properly set for conducting a magnetic particle inspection procedure. The surface containing the artifical flaws must be covered with a thin inert and non-magnetic coating for proper operation.

  • Patent number: 5039060
Abstract: A damper/isolator device having four ring segments (38) which are retained in slots (36) in an upper guide (31). The four segments (38) are forced radially outward against a valve bonnet liner (30) and are retained and centered within the slot (36) by serpentine or buggy type springs (44). The natural frequency of the damper and spring system is designed to be significantly higher than the frequency of the applied vibration induced by steam flow across a valve seat. This provides for the isolation of the valve plug (13) from the liner (30) and bonnet bore (11). The surface interaction between the ring segments (38) and the upper guide (31) provides for added friction damping to the system.
