    Abstract: The system provides for controlling color reproduction of input color image data representing one or more pages or page constituents in a network having nodes (or sites). Each one of the nodes comprises at least one rendering device. The system distributes the input color image data from one of the nodes to other nodes, and provides a data structure (virtual proof) in the network. This data structure has components shared by the nodes and other components present only at each node. Next, the system has means for providing color calibration data at each node characterizing output colors (colorants) of the rendering device of the node, and means for producing at each node, responsive to the color calibration data of the rendering device of the node, information for transforming the input color image data into output color image data at the rendering device of the node. The information is then stored in the data structure in different ones of the shared and other components.

    Abstract: A robust spectrophotometer (also known as a color spectrometer or colorimeter) is self contained in a housing which is adapted to be held-held and has all of the electrical, optical and electro optic elements mounted on a board captured within the housing at one end of which light from a sample is restricted to an object area and projected after being dispersed spectrally, as with a reflection grating, to an image area at a photodetector via a lens which has an optical axis and converges the dispersed light at the image area. The dispersive element is mounted on an arm having a pivot laterally offset from the dispersive element's surface where a diverging beam of light from the object area is incident and is deflected to the image area. The geometry is such that the dispersive element may be rotated to a position where the beam is specularly deflected (zeroth order diffraction), and the spectrometer calibrated when the dispersive element is in the specular reflection/deflection position.

    Abstract: A natural language processing system uses unformatted naturally occurring text and generates a subject vector representation of the text, which may be an entire document or a part thereof such as its title, a paragraph, clause, or a sentence therein. The subject codes which are used are obtained from a lexical database and the subject code(s) for each word in the text is looked up and assigned from the database. The database may be a dictionary or other word resource which has a semantic classification scheme as designators of subject domains. Various meanings or senses of a word may have assigned thereto multiple, different subject codes and psycholinguistically justified sense meaning disambiguation is used to select the most appropriate subject field code. Preferably, an ordered set of sentence level heuristics is used which is based on the statistical probability or likelihood of one of the plurality of codes being the most appropriate one of the plurality.

    Abstract: An improved mechanism for centering a roll of paper stock for printing in a portable printer is provided, in which the printer has a housing with a cavity and an opening from a side thereof to provide a receptacle for the roll. The centering mechanism includes a spindle disposed in the cavity toward the opening and mounted in the housing for rotation about an axis, and a pair of arms coupled to each other to move in opposite directions with respect to a center between the arms. The arms engage the two opposing ends of the roll when received on the spindle for centering the roll on the spindle. The arms are coupled to each other by a rack and pinion assembly which moves the arms in opposite direction to each other responsive to a force applied by an operator to one of the arms when a roll is received on the spindle.

    Abstract: A master microprocessor downloads program codes to a slave microprocessor which does not require a read-only memory ROM containing any instruction codes. While downloading, the slave microprocessor reads the program instructions to execute from a register, which is written to by the master microprocessor. The execution of these instructions causes the slave microprocessor to write program instructions to its RAM which will be executed later, in normal operation. The slave microprocessor has a handshaked bus which causes it to terminate a read from the register only after the master microprocessor has written to it. Logic, preferably a programmable array logic (PAL) device, decodes addresses and generates the "READY" handshake bus signal for the slave microprocessor. The cost of the slave microprocessor is reduced since a bootloader ROM which may be embedded internal or external to the slave microprocessor integrated circuit chip is not required.
