  • Patent number: 4696295
Abstract: A self-rescue breathing apparatus has a radial-flow purifier 3 connected between a mouthpiece and a breathing bag 10. An outer plenum of the purifier is open at both ends, a central conduit is open only at the breathing-bag end. Flap valves 50A and 50B control the flow of gas so that exhaled breath passes radially inwards through the purifying medium which gas for inhalation passes freely up the outer plenum, reducing both the resistance to flow and the heating of the inhaled gas that the purifier (which works by exothermic chemical reaction) would otherwise cause.

  • Patent number: 4696497
Abstract: The invention proposes a quick connection which has utility in a wide field, for instance, for connecting fluid lines, electric cables, etc., and comprises an inserted tubular end portion, which is formed near its extreme end with concave recesses serving as detent means, and which is provided with a radially acting locking collar. The second tubular end portion comprises a socket, which contains an inserted locking ring, which has detent fingers, which releasably interlock with the concave recesses of the inserted tubular end portion and are provided on their back side with reversely foldable, thin webs which bear on the inside surface of the socket. Such quick coupling can be resiliently interlocked simply in that the tubular end portions are urged into each other, and can be unlocked only by an angular movement. The coupling is particularly adapted to be connected and disconnected by industrial robots in automated production sequences. The coupling transmits longitudinal forces and is radially locked.

  • Patent number: 4696313
Abstract: The method for expanding tabacco lamina comprises contacting the tobacco with an organic expansion agent, heating the thus contacted tobacco in a closed first vessel so that the temperature of the agent is above the boiling point of the agent at a lower release pressure, and suddenly venting the first vessel into a second vessel which is at said release pressure prior to the venting. By this means the fill volume of the tobacco is increased by a least 50%.

  • Patent number: 4695326
Abstract: The sweetner prepared by adding palatinose to sucrose is a low-cariogenic since palatinose is not only low cariogenic in itself, but also inhibits the formation of insoluble glucan from sucrose in an oral cavity.Since the sweetner is almost same as sucrose in quality of sweetness, dissolvability in a mouth, palatability, etc., and further is low-cariogenic when it is used in foods, it is suitable as sweetner. In addition, since the sweetner is usually crystalline or powdery, it is easy to handle.

  • Patent number: 4691836
Abstract: A closure device for a receptacle is provided with a first generally annular member adapted to be fixed to the receptacle across the opening thereof. A second generally annular member is substantially coaxial with the first annular member and is adapted to be axially moved between an inward closed position and an outer open position. An elastically deformable annular membrane member has one end fixed relative to the first annular member and another end for retaining the second annular member. A fluid passageway in the closure communicates with the container interior when the first annular member is in the open position. Valve means cooperates with valve seat for closing off the passageway when the first annular member is in a closed position.

  • Patent number: 4692062
Abstract: A shield-type tunneling machine comprises a shield body having a front portion converging gradually rearward, a crankshaft journalled rotatably by a diaphragm provided in the shield body, a drive mechanism connected to an end of the crankshaft and a conical or frustoconical rotary head supported rotatably by the other end and disposed in the front portion of the shield body to be turned eccentrically, a gear mechanism for forcibly rotate the rotary head and a means for discharging debris from a front area of the diaphragm to a rear area. The tunneling machine, when thrusted in the ground by a jack, receives earth and sand into the front portion of the shield body and compresses them between the rotary head and the shield body to send them to the rear. The machine can be used for a pipe jacking as well as the tunneling in the soft ground.

  • Patent number: 4689692
Abstract: An optical reader comprises a plurality of light emitting elements which illuminate a plurality of points through a plurality of optical fibers, a plurality of light receiving elements which receive reflected light from the plurality of reading points through a plurality of optical fibers, and read means for reading an image on a paper on the basis of outputs from the light receiving elements. Amounts of light emitted by the individual light emitting elements are established at a plurality of halftones for illumination, thus eliminating the need for a compensation of a reference value to be used with the individual light emitting elements, thus enabling an image to be read in multiple halftones.

Abstract: A hinge is adapted to be mounted in either of two mountings, a first or flush mounting which enables closing of a cover so that it touches a container portion, and a second or spaced mounting in which the cover is maintained in spaced relation to the container portion. The hinge comprises a strap which is detachably coupled to a hinge base. The strap comprises a strap plate and at least two hooks affixed thereto. The hinge base comprises a hinge plate having an aperture in a center portion thereof a vertically protruding arcuate rib, and a support bar. In a first mounting the strap is detachably and rotatably mounted on the support bar of the hinge base so that both hooks of the strap are mounted on the support bar. In the second mounting the cover is initially detached from the container, laterally displaced along the axis of the support bar, and replaced so that only one of the hooks is mounted on the support bar.

  • Patent number: 4687871
Abstract: A racemate may be resolved into its enantiomers by stereoselective adsorption on a crystalline molecular sieve having an assymetric crystal structure for example zeolite ZSM11. The resolution may be assisted by the presence of an enantiomer of a compound separable from that of the racemate either preadsorbed on the molecular sieve or included in a polar solvent solution of the racemate to be treated. Resolution of an alkyl aryl sulphoxide racemate is exemplified.
