  • Patent number: 5251642
Abstract: A scissor-like device is described which can be used to measure the diameter of a tendon graft or bone plug. The device can also be used to hold a tendon graft or bone plug in a fixed position while multiple sutures are inserted in the end thereof. The device includes a pair of arms which are hinged at the proximal end. The inner surface of each arm includes a series of semicircular sizing sleeves which mate with one another to form a series of cylindrical sleeves of increasing diameter. A tendon graft or bone plug can be placed in the series of sleeves to determine the proper diameter of the graft or plug. Various measuring indicia are provided along the arms of the device to provide an indication of both the diameter and length of tendon tissue to be measured.

  • Patent number: 5202065
Abstract: A method of creating a score in a pouch formed from a thermoplastic film is described. Ultrasonic energy is used to create the score in a film that is later formed into a pouch. The score can be used to open the pouch by pulling opposite sides of the scored area. The ultrasonic force is applied to the film as a part of a downstream process in a blown film manufacturing line to produce the pouch.

  • Patent number: 5160319
Abstract: A dual-lumen oocyte collection device is described. The device is unique in that it includes parallel cannulas which extend axially outward from a proximal end of a hub. The device is also unique in that it further includes a finger depression on the hub. This depression located on the hub directly corresponds to an elongated beveled point of a cannula that extends from a distal end of the hub. The unique parallel cannulas and the finger depression allow medical personnel to evenly rotate and accurately orientate the beveled tip of the device to puncture a follicle on an ovary with minimal trauma prior to collecting an oocyte.

  • Patent number: 5149325
Abstract: A system is described for the collection and re-infusion of fluids from a patient. The system includes a non-disposable rigid cannister and a disposable flexible liner that is placed in the cannister. Fluids are collected from a patient in the cannister liner. The liner is then removed from the cannister and the contents are re-infused back into a patient. The system is unique in that it provides a stand along vacuum means for continuously providing a relatively high vacuum to the cannister and a relatively low vacuum inside the liner to cause the liner to expand against the walls of the cannister. The stand alone vacuum means also provides a consistent relatively low vacuum to a patient's cavity for collecting fluids from the patient without damaging the patient's internal organs.

  • Patent number: 5109869
Abstract: A disposable uterine sound device is described for measuring the depth and course of an uterine cavity. The device is formed by coating a copper rod and a portion of an attached nylon handle with polyvinyl chloride. The coating is then printed with a generally nonleachable biocompatable ink to form graduations indicating units of measure of length. The resulting device is a flexible, smooth service device which minimizes trauma to a patient during use.

  • Patent number: 5099833
Abstract: A medication aerosol delivery system is described. The system is unique in that it includes a flexible reservoir for receiving medicated aerosol from a nebulizer when a patient is not inhaling. The aerosol in the reservoir can be later inhaled during the next patient inhalation. The threshold filling pressure (the pressure required for aerosol to enter the reservoir) is less than a threshold opening pressure of a one-way valve that is located between the reservoir and the patient. The medication system described herein has an increased efficiency over other medication systems without a reservoir because it allows medicated aerosol to be collected in a reservoir between patient inhalations.

  • Patent number: 5090582
Abstract: A bottle cap having a cutting means located inside the cap for selectively opening a sealed bottle is described. The cap can be rotated in either direction over the seal to cause the seal to be punctured and to cause a "C"-shaped cut in the seal. In the preferred embodiment, the center of the "C"-shaped cut portion of the seal is dragged away from the center of the mouth of the bottle, and a portion of the linear remains uncut as the cap is rotated to prevent the liner from dropping down into the bottle.

  • Patent number: 5078688
Abstract: A paracentesis catheter system for removing fluids from a patient's abdominal cavity and for administering medication into the abdominal cavity. The catheter system includes a solid stylet, a catheter, a hemostasis valve assembly connected to the catheter, and delivery tubing with a needle connecting the catheter assembly to a stopcock. The stopcock has provisions for connections alternately to a syringe or to a vacuum bottle or drainage bag. The hemostasis valve includes an internal glan, which is compressed to shut off fluid flow through the end of the valve assembly after removing the solid stylet. This causes fluid to be diverted through the side arm tubing and stopcock to a fluid collection container.

  • Patent number: 5074316
Abstract: A surgical drape for use in surgical procedures such as those wherein a catheter is inserted within a vein or artery of a patient. The drape includes a base sheet, for covering portions of the patient, that includes a fenestration and at least one tab portion that provides a member to which a catheter, inserted in a vein or artery of a patient, can be removably coupled during the surgical procedure. The drape further includes a pleated sheet portion so constructed and arranged so as to drape along the patient's arm near the operative site. In an embodiment, the drape includes an instrument pouch. The instrument pouch can be removably secured to the drape near the operative site. The pouch includes means for removably receiving surgical tools and positioning catheters used during the surgical procedure with respect to the drape. Preferably, the pouch is substantially transparent.
