  • Patent number: 4316829
Abstract: A chemically-modified asphalt composition formed by reaction of asphalt and a polymerizable aromatic monomer followed by reaction with a polyester. Alternatively, the impact strength of the chemically-modified asphalt composition can be increased by carrying out the latter reaction in the presence of a rubbery polymer. The composition is non-tacky relative to the asphalt and can be cross-linked with a vulcanizing agent to form rigid bodies which can be chemically bonded to reinforcements and fillers, specifically including glass fibers.

  • Patent number: 4301051
Abstract: A chemically modified asphalt prepared by reacting an asphalt with a polymerizable vinyl monomer (e.g., styrene) and a rubbery polymer whereby the rubbery polymer is chemically integrated with the asphalt. The chemically modified asphalt can be, if desired, further cross linked by reaction with a cross linking agent such as a polycarboxylic acid, an organic isocyanate or an organic polyepoxide. • Patent number: 4292371
Abstract: A bitumen composition modified with an organo silane in which a bitumen such as asphalt is reacted with an organo silane containing ethylenic unsaturation or an organo silane containing at least one hydrogen atom bonded to the silicon atom whereby the organo silanes react with ethylenic unsaturation of the bitumen to chemically bond the organo silane to the bitumen. Also included are bitumens which have been chemically modified by reaction with steam, air, ammonia or aliphatic amines which have been reacted with a silane containing a functional group reactive with the bitumen. • Patent number: 4289536
Abstract: A process and composition for use in the manufacture of fiber-reinforced cementitious products. In the preferred practice of the invention, glass fibers are coated with a size composition containing a finely divided inorganic material having a high surface area and a polyelectrolyte, and the resulting coated glass fibers are then laid down, along with a cement composition formulated to contain cement, the inorganic material and the polyelectrolyte, whereby water is removed from the cement composition to form a glass fiber reinforced cementitious product arranging to the Matschek or Magniani process.

  • Patent number: 4241136
Abstract: A process and composition for treating glass fibers for use as reinforcement of cementitious materials. The glass fibers are first sized with a size composition containing cationic fiber forming organic polymer and then a second coating containing an anionic film-forming organic polymer is applied to the glass fibers whereby the cationic and anionic polymers react to form a thin film on the glass fiber surfaces.
