  • Patent number: 6909277
Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring a characteristic, such as speed, of a machine. A variable reluctance sensor (VRS) is coupled to a resistive element, which filters a portion of a basic output signal generated by the VRS having a frequency above a prescribed threshold level, thus removing high-frequency noise from the basic output signal. An amplifier amplifies the filtered output signal. The filtered, amplified output signal has an increased signal-to-noise ratio such that the machine characteristic, i.e. speed, can be more accurately measured during a slow speed operation. A controller generates a control signal received by a switching device to decouple the resistive element when machine speed exceeds a prescribed threshold level. Then, the basic output signal is used to measure the characteristic of the machine during normal machine operation.

  • Patent number: 6885186
Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring a characteristic of a machine. A variable reluctance sensor (VRS) is coupled to the machine. A first switching device and capacitor, coupled in parallel with the VRS, boosts a variable amplitude of a basic output signal generated by the VRS to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. A control input of the first switching device receives signals, and a modified output signal is generated by the first switching device, having a variable amplitude that is substantially higher than the variable amplitude of the VRS. The modified output signal has an increased signal-to-noise ratio such that machine speed can be more accurately measured during a start-up phase.

  • Patent number: 6803700
Abstract: A pre-stressed piezoelectric actuator is comprised of a plurality of layers. The layers include at least one electrically-active ceramic layer, a reinforcing substrate, and a top layer. Preferably, the top layer is comprised of a copper material having at least one lead integrally formed therewith, the lead being available for attaching the device to a voltage source. The copper layer further has a plurality of apertures defined therein to compensate for the stiffness of the copper and to allow the copper layer to deform. The layers are bonded by a thermally-activated adhesive. When the layers and adhesive are heated and cooled, the higher coefficients of thermal expansion in the substrate and top layers stresses the ceramic and causes the device to cool into an arcuate shape.

  • Patent number: 6703761
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods for controlling the temperature induced deformation of a piezoelectric device. A piezoelectric device receives an activation signal and displaces in a first direction for a first predetermined distance as a function of the activation signal. The piezoelectric device also displaces in a second direction as a function of a change in temperature of the piezoelectric device. A stop is located a second predetermined distance from the piezoelectric device. The stop prevents the displacement of the piezoelectric device in the second direction beyond a third predetermined distance. A charge redistributing device is coupled with the piezoelectric device. The charge redistributing device redistributes charge on the piezoelectric device due to the temperature change to relieve internal electric fields of the piezoelectric device due to temperature induced deformation of the piezoelectric device.

  • Patent number: 6654673
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring various conditions of a machine which may be remotely located. The parameters available in the machine's monitoring system are synchronized in machine and remote systems. A diagnostic system comprised of a prognostics engine or an interface reviews data stored in the remote system and determines the parameters to be monitored and the allowable tolerances, which are relayed to the machine system. The monitoring system monitors the condition of the machine based upon the diagnostic system's directions, and the machine system reports when the parameters vary from the defined tolerances.

  • Patent number: 6647332
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for controlling the pressure of an actuating fluid flowing through an inching clutch. The invention includes the steps of determining an actual pressure of the actuating fluid, establishing an inching pressure threshold, comparing the actual pressure with the threshold, and controlling the actual pressure in response to the comparison. In one embodiment, the pressure is controlled using a first control algorithm in response to the fluid pressure being less than an inching threshold, and using a second control algorithm in response to the pressure being greater than or equal to the inching threshold.

  • Patent number: 6577909
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for automatically shutting down an engine on a machine in during an operators absence in order to prevent potential damage to the machine. A determination is made regarding if the machine is running, and an if an operator is not present. In the preferred embodiment a plurality of predetermined shutdown values, which correspond with at least one of a plurality of critical parameters, are stored in the controller. The machine will shutdown if the critical parameters are determined to be beyond the shutdown values. Additionally, a cool down feature, if enabled, will cause the machine to cool down prior to the machine being shutdown.

  • Patent number: 6552279
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus configured to perform viscosity compensation for a payload measurement system of a machine. The machine has at least one cylinder for elevating a payload carrier. The cylinder is connected to a fluid circuit having an actuating fluid. A plurality of pressure values of the actuating fluid are sensed during a lifting of a first payload. Then a plurality of pressure values of the actuating fluid are sensed during a lifting of a second payload. In addition a parameter indicative of the fluid viscosity associated with the first and second lift is established. A plurality of pressure values of the actuating fluid are sensed during a lifting of a third payload, and a parameter indicative of the viscosity of the actuating fluid associated with the third lift is established. A payload weight of the third payload is then determined in response to the viscosity indicative parameters, and the sensed plurality of actuating fluid pressure values.
