    Abstract: A piston and cylinder assembly according to the invention includes a cylinder block having a cylinder defined by a cylinder bore wall, a cylinder head connected to the cylinder block, and a piston for reciprocating in the cylinder relative the cylinder head. A combustion chamber for an air/fuel mixture has a volume formed by the cylinder bore wall, cylinder head, and the piston, and is divided into an intake side and an exhaust side by a longitudinal center axis of the piston. A spark plug is mounted in the cylinder head and extends into the combustion chamber to ignite the air/fuel mixture therein. A crown of the piston has a raised peak offset from the longitudinal center axis for providing a homogeneous air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber near the spark plug.

    Abstract: An in-line combination steering pump with a shaft and water pump having a housing defining a pumping chamber into which the outer end of the shaft extends. The water pump housing supports an annular adapter member for supporting a seal which encompasses the shaft and is press mounted in the adapter. An impeller is removably secured to the outer end of the shaft adjacent the seal. A bushing encompasses the shaft between the seal and the impeller and is compressed by attachment of the impeller to the shaft so as press the seal firmly into the adapter. For replacement, the seal and bushing are removable over the outer end of the shaft after the impeller is removed.

    Abstract: A boot and attaching frame assembly for closing an opening in a wall of a steering column shroud through which a gear shift lever extends. The assembly includes a flexible boot having a central portion provided with a passage adapted to receive the gear shift lever. A marginal position of the boot is folded inwardly upon itself to provide a terminal flange and to form a laterally inwardly opening groove. The terminal flange is adapted to engage an outer annular surface portion of the wall of the shroud around the opening therein. The assembly also includes an annular frame for securing the boot to the shroud. The frame has an annular base adapted to fit within the opening in the wall of the shroud. The frame has inner retainer tabs extending laterally outwardly from the base to engage an inner surface portion of the wall of the shroud around the opening therein. The frame has an outer retainer flange extending laterally outwardly from the base into the groove in the boot.

    Abstract: A battery mounting system is provided which permits use of batteries designed both in accord with European and American battery casing standards. The mounting system utilizes a strap member with a first portion partially bordering a first side of the battery, a second mid-portion extending underneath the battery, a third portion partially bordering a second side of the battery, and a fourth portion providing a support surface which extends lateral away from the battery's second side. The first portion has an end compliantly contacting a first angled surface formed on one side of the battery. The fourth portion supports a movable retainer which has an angled ramp complementary to a similar ramp formed on the fourth portion for engagement together so as to laterally urge the retainer into engagement with a second angled surface on the second side of the battery.

    Abstract: An engine cooling system for an automotive vehicle including a liquid coolant deaeration and overflow bottle having plural cells constituting a degassing chamber assembly with the first cell having only an upper fluid inlet for initially receiving liquid coolant from the engine cooling system and a lower flow-through window which leads into an adjacent cell for receiving coolant from the first cell. The other cells are likewise connected together in series and the final cell has an outlet connected back into the engine cooling system. Coolant in the cells of the degassing chamber assembly creates a liquid trap arrangement to prevent any substantial back flow of accumulated air from the deaeration chamber assembly back into the engine's cooling system when engine operation is terminated. Most importantly, this prevents any formation of air bubbles in the heater core circuit which may restrict coolant flow and seriously degrade heater effectiveness, particularly at idle and low engine speed operation.

    Abstract: A fuel sending unit for an off-road vehicle subject to upward impacts on a fuel tank of the vehicle. The fuel sending unit includes a cannister providing a reservoir for fuel. A frame for supporting the cannister in the fuel tank has legs which straddle the cannister. Side bars slidable vertically on the legs have horizontal pivot pins which pivotally support the cannister. The cannister is in the form of an elongated cylindrical body and is rotated to a vertical or upright position for insertion into the fuel tank. After insertion, the cannister is rotated to a horizontal position of use in which it is spaced a substantial distance above the bottom wall of the fuel tank. The legs are supported on the bottom wall of the fuel tank. The side bars are connected to the top wall of the fuel tank. Springs carried by the legs press upwardly on the side bars.

The body locating portion selectively couples the tool to a first structure, such as a vehicle body. The first location portion has a wedge member and a post member. The post member engages a latch ratchet in the latch mechanism and the tapered surfaces of the wedge member engage either the latch mechanism or the structure to which the latch mechanism is mounted. The second location portion includes a plate member, a positioning member and a positioning structure. The plate member has a first cavity which receives the positioning member. The plate member also has a slot which receives a member of the striker. The positioning structure is coupled to the plate member and slidable thereon along an axis parallel to the first cavity. The positioning structure adapted to contact a rear surface of the second structure.

    Abstract: A vehicle suspension system is provided including a trailing arm which is adapted to be pivotally connected to a frame of the vehicle. A wheel assembly is mounted to a first end of the trailing arm and a torsion element is integrally mounted within the trailing arm. A crank arm is provided having a first end mounted to the torsion element and a second end which is substantially fixed against movement in a vertical direction. As the trailing arm moves in a vertical direction, the crank arm provides torsion to the torsion element which acts as a spring for the vehicle suspension. By substantially mounting the entire suspension system directly below the vehicle frame rails, increased space is available between the wheels for luggage, fuel and spare tire storage. The rear suspension package is substantially reduced in both size and weight.

A conductive band has a first end fixedly attached to the clamping mechanism and a second end adjustably associated with the threaded member. Rotation of the threaded member adjusts the second end of the band relative to the first end to thereby tighten the band around the metallic vehicular component. A grounding strap having a width substantially greater than a height interconnects a ground surface of the vehicle with a second portion of the clamping mechanism. The second portion is preferably unitarily formed with the housing and is adapted to crimp the end of the strap.
