  • Patent number: 5999557
Abstract: This invention is directed to a method and apparatus for thermal homogenization of molten metal in a heath of a electric arc furnace for steel production. The invention addresses the problem of lack of thermal homogenization by providing a lance which directs oxygen gas downwardly towards the surface of the bath and into the molten metal in a direction that diverges away from a direct line to a central region of the hearth through a horizontal divergence angle in the range of 10.degree. to 50.degree. thereby to enhance movement of the molten metal about the hearth and the direction of the gas is inclined downwardly to strike the nominal horizontal plane of the surface of the bath at an inclined angle in the range of 35.degree. to 50.degree. thereby to minimize splashing of the molten metal.

  • Patent number: 5996252
Abstract: A shoe having a replaceable sole pad for use by roofers is provided wherein the shoe has a thin lower flexible portion with a sheet or layer of hook fasteners of the hook-and-loop type fastener system disposed on a bottom surface thereof, and having a band secured thereto extending around a periphery of the shoe, and wherein a replaceable sole pad is provided having a sheet or layer of the corresponding loop elements provided on an upper surface thereof. The sole pad is constructed of a high density, closed-cell foam that provides greatly improved traction on roofing surfaces, thereby improving worker safety and productivity or efficiency, and provides adequate durability to make the shoe with the replaceable soles cost justifiable, when factoring in the improved productivity. The sole pad is installed and removed from the shoe in the conventional manner in which two object are fastened and unfastened by the use of hook-and-loop fasteners.

  • Patent number: 5992323
Abstract: The invention relates to a printing process, such as lithographic printing, that requires a printing press and a colorant vehicle. To enable constituting and rapidly removing motifs to be transferred to a printing medium, a hardenable material having good affinity for the colorant vehicle is deposited automatically and directly onto a device that cannot be dismantled or detached from the press, i.e., is part of the press, and that is constituted of a material having an opposite affinity, so as to constitute the motifs to be transferred to the medium. The material constituting the device is such that the material can be removed rapidly when the motifs are to be changed, and is such that new motifs can be constituted there immediately after the removal of those preceding them.

  • Patent number: 5993038
Abstract: A tool at the service of a distributed application running on machines of a distributed data processing system running in a local area network, intended for balancing the load on each of the machines of the system, includes a master daemon and a plurality of agent demons. The master and each of the agents calculate the load of the machine on which they are running. The master collects the load data of each of the agents at a first sampling interval and sends that collected load data to all of the agents. At the request of the distributed application, the local agent closest to the application indicates to the application which machine has the lightest load. The application then makes the decision to request the machine with the lightest load to execute the services the application requires. As necessary, the tool selects a master from the agents, thereby ensuring the existence and uniqueness of a master at all times, regardless of failure affecting one 1010 or more machines in the data processing system.

  • Patent number: 5988258
Abstract: Casting metal strip by delivering molten metal to a casting pool (81) supported on a pair of parallel casting rolls (16) and passing metal downwardly between the rolls to produce solidified strip (20). Flow of metal to the casting pool (81) is controlled by an input flow control valve (47). At start of casting when pool (81) is being filled speed of rolls (16) is varied in response to variations between actual instantaneous pool level and predicted level until pool approaches desired operational level. Thereafter any variations between instantaneous roll speed and desired operational roll speed are caused to adjust valve (47) to being pool level and roll speed to desired operational valves.
